The product description on the Rough Trade site matches the exact text from the 2020 release, so it might just be a case of Rough Trade accidentally attaching the CD/digital artwork on the product pag

Anything to give it exposure would be good, with so many greatest hits now in the top 100 for years on end it would be nice to see the this been another one. Anyone know if this is far off triple plat

It's because the song was used in the Pepsi commercials, which were shown across the world and are still quite iconic ads nowadays. They certainly should have released it as a proper single back then, together with Step To Me.

I think Step To Me should have DEFINITELY been included in the Greatest Hits too, as well as performed on the tour.

I agree -- during Spice Mania, it would have been a #1 likely. They probably thought....we are so busy, meh, we have a couple more albums coming to get more #1s. :cheer:

Well we all know how that turned out :teresa:

Whether the song was any good or if it was even an album track, I truly believe that anything they released in 1997 in the UK would have gone to #1 they were so powerful at the time.

They could have milked Spice a little more. In hindsight it was a missed opportunity not to release another single in June or July 1997.

If U Can't Dance/Move Over double-A side would have been perfect. Those two songs compliment each other well.

Love thing / Step to me or Move over was the obvious 5th single from Spice bridging into Spiceworld era, then releasing who do you think you are in the USA as the final single there.

If Love Thing was going to be a single then they would have to remix it. Perhaps the single mix could have been the studio version from the Istanbul show.

That would have been PERFECT

And then they could re-release Spice in August to include this new Love Thing version and Step To Me, whilst also releasing Who Do You Think You Are later in America, in the Autumn. Spice World album could have come in Spring 1998 and still smash (probably more so in USA than it did in the end...)

I like Move Over, but I think there's a fact that's been somewhat lost to time. That main hook of the song existed in a Pepsi commercial before the Spice Girls and their team took it...and built the rest of the song around it. I might feel differently if this were a situation like Madonna and Like A Prayer...where the song was created on its own and just so happened to be used in a Pepsi commercial. But since Move Over's life began as a soft drink song? Nah, I prefer that it wasn't ever a single. As soft drink songs go, though...I think it's about as good as they come. If you weren't around in the 90s, I'm sure you could listen to the album and have no idea about the soft drink connection.

As for Step To Me, I believe I remember hearing it got 'okay' radio play in the UK (lower top 40, I think?). For me, it'd be a little unusual for them to have left Step To Me off the first album (it's among their early demos), only to later decide to release it as a single. On the plus side, the song plays well to the stronger performers in the group...and may have allowed for some more good live performances. That's where that song really came into its own anyway.

Would whatever they released at that time been a hit? Probably. But I'd also argue the nine singles they released from 1996 to 1998 were all really strong. And for me, it's probably for the best they never tried out anything weaker. I figure the closest thing we got to the group trying to carry a 'meh' single during Spice mania was their involvement with How Does It Feel To Be On Top Of The World (though I'm aware they're only featured on that)

.... and don't forget that awful charity single 'It's Only Rock'n'Roll (But I Like It)' which got to #19 or something and featured loads of artists including the Spice Girls :teresa:

Think a single mix for Step To Me would have been quite cool as a single. I can imagine being even more rocky than the track we know, closer to the live mix, I guess :w00t: Plus, it would have bridged the two albums beautifully.

Move Over would have been cool and edgy. I get the hesitation as it was a gingle first but whatever, it is a bop and they should have tried at least to give it a single mix. A cute double A side between those two would have smashed!

But ultimately if there was to be a single after Viva Forever it should have always been Never Give Up On the Good Times first. Then Move Over/Step To Me cos we are greedy and we deserve good things  :P

No, no, no! You are all wrong. Outer Space Girls is the ultimate bop that should have been a single but never was. -_-

Outer Space Girls is the OG bop.

Vicky B shines like no one with her ‘We’re rockin’ to the moon’.

What a track.

I actually loved Out of spice girls growing up and really wanted them to open a show with it stomping down a ramp from a space ship lol... G force with a zoom! But it's terrible

We all know what song should have been on the greatest hits.

Can you truly love a #1 single? 😁
