Doesn't a single have to be bought at a certain threshold price for it to count? Something like minimum 40p I think?

two pence?

I guess it could get a boost if enough people are still interested but not enough so that they'd pay £4 for it. Reminds me of Hallelujah getting a bargain bin boost

Yes 2 whole pence  They had people offering it to customers as they walked in apperently and the website shows no signs of it selling out - They literally must have 1,000s left!

Will be interesting to see if Band Aid get a boost next week - The Asda website has redeuced the CD single online to 2p!!!! lol

HA  I guess they have to get rid of their stock somehow, they might as well give it away for free.

Yes the retailer has to buy it at a certain price which Asda have, They can however sell it for whatever they like and it will still count towards the charts.

Anyway I'm going off topic :P Could return to the Top 10 next week though?

Oops 2p?!

'Do They Know It's Christmas? (2014)' is going to have a crazy chart run if there are many takers~

Hozier's ascent up the chart is amazing! Take Me to Church hits the top twenty eighteen weeks into its release, and I think it will keep on going until January. Anyone have the full chart run, please?

Just seen the drops for the UJ single and album :drama: Surely this will be the last we hear of them?

Pretty unreal Chris Rea is consistently the 5th highest Xmas song each year.

Was there much if a difference in streaming Xmas songs in the top 100 compared to last year?
  • Author

Streaming ultimately hasn't lead to much of an increased Xmas domination at all - although I suspect the peak streams of the Xmas songs will be over the next few days so perhaps the week after Christmas will have more festive songs in it than usual, as they'll have several days of very high streaming as well as sales (though both will still dive off a cliff starting 25/26 Dec so big drops are still to be expected).

For reference the Xmas songs remaining in the top 100 in the post-Xmas week last year:

15 (3) Leona Lewis

24 (14) The Pogues

30 (13) Mariah Carey

55 (30) Kelly Clarkson

68 (36) Wham!

80 (41) Wizzard

91 (53) Chris Rea

92 (51) Slade

Last year's Christmas songs in the top 40 on Xmas chart week:

03. Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You

06. Wham! - Last Christmas

13. The Pogues feat. Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York

17. Michael Bublé - It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

22. Shakin' Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone

26. Andy Williams - It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

31. Michael Bublé - Santa Claus Is Coming To Town

32. Leona Lewis - One More Sleep

34. Michael Bublé feat. Shania Twain - White Christmas

36. Michael Bublé - All I Want For Christmas Is You

37. Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas

39. Michael Bublé - Holly Jolly Christmas

significant difference there :o I imagine the fact that streaming has gained a lot in popularity has something to do with where these songs are charting, there's only 6 in this year's Xmas Top 40 streaming chart!

Annoyingly they normally don't play them in the top 40 chart as it's usually the 27-29th dec and for some reason in this country Xmas songs are played from Nov 1st but are never heard from midday on Xmas day onwards

Streaming of Christmas music peaks on 24/25th December, so next week's chart will probably have the biggest impact. E.g. last year on the chart dated 29th December 2013 Mariah Carey was actually #1 on the streaming chart.

Yeh there is which is strange, I thought Greg Lake was in the top 40 too for some reason. Bony M do well too lol

• One Direction only make #50 despite X Factor performance

#50's actually quite respectable for a song with no airplay so nothing to hold it up throughout the week! Plus it's on an album that's still selling incredibly well, so I'd say #50's a good result :kink:

(plus Midnight Memories didn't really do much better in the same situation last year)

Streaming of Christmas music peaks on 24/25th December, so next week's chart will probably have the biggest impact. E.g. last year on the chart dated 29th December 2013 Mariah Carey was actually #1 on the streaming chart.

It'll be interesting to hear then. The sheer force of the gift card effect from thurs-Saturday should see them evening out officially but as the gift card effect becomes less each yr due to streaming it will make the chart more stable in the final week if the year!

You forgot Last Christmas at #35.
