It's been a while since I last did a rate on here, and with Red Nose Day around the corner again I thought it appropriate to make this rate based around the Comic Relief singles from the last 30 years so...here's how it's gonna work...

Below are all 21 of the Comic Relief singles to date. There are unlimited rates for no's 1-10, plus one 11 and one -1 are allowed. 21. RIGHT SAID FRED - Stick it Out

Highest UK chart position: #3

 

Existing and succeeding in that weird time for UK pop in the early 90's - post S/A/W and pre-Take That - Right Said Fred had been the runaway chart success of late 1991 and all of 1992. The ubiquitous "I'm Too Sexy" (a hit both sides of the Atlantic) and chart topper "Deeply Dippy" thus made them ideal candidates for recording the official track for Comic Relief's 1993 campaign.

 

 

This was only on paper that this idea worked however, as the Freds teamed up with a suitably bonkers and very early 90's cast - ranging from Jools Holland and 'Birds of a Feather' stars Pauline Quirke and Linda Robson, to Basil Brush and even acting legend Bernard Cribbins (whose own chart hit from 30 years previously had provided their band name) - for a song that, despite a respectable top 3 placing is hardly the track from the charity's history (or the band's for that matter) most people immediately think of.

20. SMEAR CAMPAIGN - (I Wanna Be) Elected

Highest UK chart position: #9

 

Now for a record that is easily the biggest curveball in all of Comic Relief's musical canon. Spring of 1992, and the UK was a mere matter of weeks away from its Parliamentary General Election, which would see John Major and the Conservatives voted in for another 5 years - much to the chagrin of a country still in the throes of a recession.

 

 

20 years prior to that, legendary US rockers Alice Cooper had scored a Transatlantic hit in the run up to that year's US general election with 'Elected', a radical re-write of an old album track 'Reflected' from their 1969 album 'Pretties for You'.

 

Thus came this bizarre collaboration that saw Bruce Dickinson of UK rock outfit Skin (not to be confused with the frontwoman of Skunk Anansie) providing vocals to a cover of the song, interspersed with soundbites of Rowan Atkinson in his infamous 'Mr. Bean' persona, doorstopping for votes.

 

Again, as with Right Said Fred, not the most easily remembered track for the charity (it was, as we'll come to with a few of our other singles later, released outside of Comic Relief's traditional even numbered year campaign cycle) but an interesting footnote nonetheless - and considering who has been in office in the 22 years since this record came out, well. It may not have been a bad idea having Mr. Bean running the country after all...
