I don't think prisons and custodials sentences should even exist, except for the most serious crimes. It's just not ethical. I'm not sure how the government, which we are born under without any say, has the right over people's freedom, except in the case of protecting society from harm e.g murderers, rapists, etc.

So you think it's okay to go around assaulting another human being or robbing someone's house or mugging an old lady and there be no consequences. What planet are you living on?

He’s not saying there’s no consequence, just that for crimes like that custodial sentences aren’t always the right answer. A lot of crimes like that are rooted in issues that can be solved through well funded parole, social care and mental health services.

Sorry for putting words in your mouth Michael!

No, that's exacrly what I think anyway!

Ah, the old socialist idea that most crime are committed due to reduced circumstances.

Many people commit crimes because they know they can get away with them, nothing to do with poverty. As for ethics, most criminals don't give a sh1t about them - they're just looking for easy money, sod those they hurt in the process. :(

Here is a detailed study from this year, with references, that shows links between crimes in London and poverty/social inequality. There has been a rise in violence post-austerity.

Here is another study on how poorer citizens are not only more likely to commit crimes but are also more likely to be the victims.

There may be a link, but it is not an *excuse* since there are many people in equally poor circumstances that are law-abiding citizens.

Ah, so you have no studies confirming it and are doing the typical right wing thing of talking a load of shite and claiming it's fact, then repeating it enough to make those lies propaganda. Mkay.

Studies and research are done for a reason. You're not being objective.

Crime goes DOWN with investment. In a fair, equal society where the money the rich paid on security went to the less well-off, you'd find a far more harmonious, and safe, society.

Speaking of crime, the Home Office just released statistics on hate crimes (2018 to 2019) in England and Wales.

Hate crimes have more than doubled this decade with a massive increase after the EU Referendum.

From 2018-2019:

Transgender hate crimes have increased by 37%

Sexual orientation hate crimes have increased by 25%

Disability hate crimes have increased by 14%

Racial hate crimes have increased by 11%

Religious hate crimes have increased by 3% (47% against Muslims, 18% against Jewish people)

There has been a 10% spike this year.

Having a far right government following a fsr right referendum, with Nazi Farage promoted by BBTory et al at every turn, emboldens the fascists, hard right and racists.

Does that by any chance correlate with the decline in police numbers?

Ah, the standard right-wing tactic of failing to see the difference between an explanation and an excuse.

To think he keeps pretending to be Labour etc when everything he says is either a right wing tactic or talking point/ propaganda!
Also, Tories are copying the Repukes and trying to bring in voter suppression laws. We KNEW that's what they wanted to do aftee its success for Repukes in the US, and after their abysmal "trials" over here under Mad May. 11 million do not have passports or driving licences!! Absolutely VILE.

You really think so little of others don't you. Not doing something because you'll get caught and punished otherwise is the lowest level of morality. Children make their way past that. Most adults certainly have. As the study above says, most criminals are poor, doing it because there is no other option, but of course important to note that most poor are not criminals.

Awful shit. I believe it was 28 cases across the entire country, and one went further was the numbers I saw, something miniscule like that anyway. It's entirely unnecessary in both cost of implementation and how likely it is to cause poorer voters to not vote.

Yup - only one case went to the courts!!

I literally know about people voting by proxy in Spain in the referendum, who got screenshots from the proxy bragging about voting for Brexshit on their behalf!! But no. The problem is the ONE CASE, after voting fraud having NEVER BEEN A PROBLEM BEFORE!!

Waiting for the Tories here to try and defend this dispicable, anti-democrstic, authoritarian move, and justify voting for a party that would bring such measures in.

Also let's remind ourselves that the rich make laws for the poor to abide by. Do you think the rich get prosecuted for taking drugs, etc? The sewers of London and thr Tory mps talking about their drug "pasts" certsinly say otherwise.
