I’d usually always say dance, but given the direction I’m planning to go for the next contest, I would like to see more Rock music please! But I don’t want you to break your qualification streak if you struggle to find something. ;)

hmm we’ll see. trouble is guitar music that I like is hard to find but after stumbling upon ‘The Empiric’ by chance which placed fairy decently its perhaps something I’d like to find more of.

 

and if we end up flopping horrendously there’s always the rebrand option. :P could go with Daanaeviia to match my username or maybe even full out Daanaaeviiaa.

The Danævii general election has just come to its conclusion and for the first time since Tim Bergling’s landslide victory the Orange Party has been ousted by the progressive rival Blue Diamond Party. As is now the law in the interest of gender equality there will now be a male and female President, congratulations go to Nora En Pure and Gareth Emery who now de-seat Jess Glynne and Calvin Harris.

 

Also gaining seats in Parliament are the Green Energy Party, the Shut Up and Party, the All Night Dance Party and the controversial anarchist group We Don’t Wanna Party.

 

Ms Pure says “this is a wonderful opportunity to make Danæviia a more beautiful and affordable place to live in. as promised in our manifesto we will be sending free WiFi to every household and half the price of rail travel as well as putting more funding into the EDM School for the Youth to keep Danaeviia as the top exporter of quality dance music for the foreseeable future. it is also most pleasing that my environment agenda of the restoration of our Wetlands will be able to get underway imminently.” Mr Emery celebrated the news at his latest live show going all out on the lasers and fireworks budget.

A rare hardstyle track from us, looking back now this was one of the weaker entries I sent in this period but for a short time I really loved this for being the first Darren Styles track in many many years to grab my attention. It has some great melodic elements in it anyhow and had a respectable final position all things considered anyhow.

A rarity here where the song I awarded my top points to I ended up enjoying more than my own entry in the long run but this was one of the best BJSC discoveries ever (although I would have ended up discovering this later regardless given its R1 support). It was a Porter Robinson alias but I didn't know he'd done an alias project yet as it got a fairly low key release initially.

Nora En Pure remains one of my favourite producers to this day (and is now one of the nation's figureheads) and whilst she eventually went on to win in BJSC for Land of DW I was the first to send her with this piano-led beauty of a relaxing deep house tune. It still remains my most played of her efforts and sounds as fresh now as it ever did. For a fairly subtle track I was pleased it managed to find its way into the top half of the final anyhow

I'm not entirely sure what style of EDM they call this but it was a lucky find for me having gone through recent JJD releases following his collaboration with TheFatRat. It's a very happy sounding instrumental EDM anthem - something Alan Walker probably wished he could've come up with. Probably not the type of song I'd send now but it still sounds great.

Big room trance got a bit too samey and noisy for me in recent times but it had some great efforts around this time. Case in point Andrew Rayel's best effort which sounded really anthemic and had the spirit of many of the festival anthems of the early 2010s. Against expectations this ended up making its way into the top 10 too proving there was a market for bangers.

This was a real slow burner for me but I eventually decided it was too good to pass up as a contest entry and I was proved right when it ended up finishing top 15. Sonny Fodera is now one of the most prominent house producers with this track having helped his name power although sadly his new stuff for the most part isn't half as good. This remains a true standout of the peak deep house era with a great vocal from Alex Mills here too

A trance instrumental is always a bit of a risk but this ended up having a bit of a base in the end anyhow. It's a real driving force of a song and the synthy elements really make it stand out for me too. Fatum never quite got close to recreating the magic and their recent material has been underwhelming but this remains great.

For how much I stan Avicii, you'd have probably expected more songs clearly influenced by his work to show up as entries of mine but ones of this quality are hard to come by. Bunt however came along with this track that really got the folk-dance style right - the instruments are very well placed and the end result is just a very uplifting song. The only surprise is how long it took for it to peak in my chart. It ended up finishing very respectably too getting some pop crossover vote that I was hoping for.

How does it hold up today?

 

 

Okay now this was proper underrated, it deserved to be a top 10! It has a great vocal, so much that the vocal sections are the best bits of the song. Just the right amount of energy in the drop to give it an anthemic feel without being overwhelming too. S8&T have a couple of other decent tunes but ultimately this is by far their best effort. At the moment I find myself generally preferring the more 'trancey' uptempo vocal trance but this still holds up very well.

2018 was a great year for BSJC, remember Cowtermont in particular were absolutely on fire.

 

Opus remains one of the best ever songs entered to BJSC. I think you had that Coco Jamboo song very high in your personal chart at the time so maybe that's why?

 

Always Gonna Be came up for me on shuffle recently and it popped, probably didn't rate it enough at the time.

 

And great to see that Choir 1.0 shout-out, we'll take the retrospective 18 :D

 

A bit of a throwback this month as we revisit Spinnin Records for entry inspiration. Don't be discouraged by their recent decline in quality/popularity though as this tune is a proper heater. It comes from Tita Lau who is the girlfriend of James Hype but also a DJ/producer in her own right. You also may have seen her name before for having done her best Nelly Furtado impression on the recent UK top 10 smash 'Talk About'. This track however is more on the borderline between tech house and techno. It also has a great music video (above) although it does cut off the last half a minute of the song so if you think the ending is too abrupt then make sure to listen to the Spotify version.

Masquerade - Danæviia as Beaverdonia (29th/35, 79 points)

 

 

Most of their dance acts weren't really doing it for me with their other material so it was a toss up between this and Digitalism and I felt like going a bit less obvious as this is a really strong rock ballad although it clearly didn't resonate too well with the voters. Zanmatony representing me only did slightly better finishing 27th sadly.
