Aren't Greatest Hits a bit outdated now? These days they're just used as a way for a record label to finish off whatever deal they have with the artist to get X amount of albums released. The Saturdays and N-Dubz are example of this from recent years, both have Greatest Hits albums but the general public would probably struggle to name a single song by either.

The world of streaming has taken away the real need for a Greatest Hits, in my opinion. If you want Rihanna's Greatest Hits just make your own, go on Spotify and make a playlist of her biggest songs. Sorted.

no, it counts to both no matter where you stream it from.

That's ridiculous! Surely it'd be easy for the OCC to distinguish which album it's streamed from?

Greatest Hits actually don't do too badly. If you look at the chart this week, hits collections from Eminem, Pink and the Beatles are still selling pretty consistently given how long they've been around. The Killers had a rebound with theirs the other year and Whitney Houston and Stereophonics usually crop up from time to time. They may not be huge hits upon release anymore but if someone is only discovering an artist then it's a great way for a casual fan to get a taste for them. They're also great for the car.

I agree with this. I know if I start to get into a new artist, a Greatest Hits is the first port of call. I think it'd be the same for many others too, so even if they don't sell massively well instantly, they'd be good trickle sellers. Making a Spotify playlist of every single by an artist is effort really, it'd get a greater impact if there's a GH album sitting right there.

Melanie C really could do with one, it would obviously be Northern Star single heavy but she has enough 'hits' since to tempt people into buying it I think. I could see her getting a 20-57-98-143-out chart run with it which would be huge for her. Get her on Loose Women and the like performing Northern Star, When You're Gone and Loving You and remind people she has some tunes.

'10 top 20 hits including the 2 massive #1's I turn to you and Never be the same again'.

Coldplay, Beyoncé, Rihanna and Muse were the first ones that came to my mind. But yeah all those listed above too.

The first three are always the ones that come to mind, but Muse is a very good shout too. Tbh, I'd say these are the only four mentioned in this thread that I think are particularly overdue a greatest hits, particularly Rihanna who is going to end up having a very un-definitive greatest hits album at this rate if she doesn't release one following ANTI. The problem is that none of these four artists have had a particular lull in their discographies where a GH could revive their careers a little or have had a chapter of music that can be closed by a GH in order to embark a new chapter. That said, if it's true their recent album is their last, Coldplay will easily have a GH to follow and Muse are probably at the stage where they could do with one.

I agree that GH are not pointless in this day and age. They may not be initial mega sellers (even within the Christmas period sometimes) or get to #1 anymore but the demand for them is still there by the fact they are great trickle sellers: as T Boy pointed out, lots of previous big GH smashes remain in the chart and even recent ones do incredibly well - The Killers being one example of a successful GH, Maroon 5's is still sticking around and will probably continue to do so and see surges every time they release an album or perform somewhere, and even Kylie's "flop" GH to celebrate 25 years in the music industry has been certified Silver recently.

not sure why Rihanna didn't release a GH during the gap between Unapololegtic and Anti, was the perfect opportunity... same for Beyonce... last year would have been perfect...

agree on these 2 and Coldplay

but also Usher, he's been going on for ages and has had many hits, weird he hasn't had a GH

AC/DC

Metallica

Arctic Monkeys

Arcade Fire

Interpol

Kings Of Leon

The White Stripes

Franz Ferdinand

Kaiser Chiefs

oh and Alicia Keys! not sure if she's been mentioned, but after 5 studio albums, could be the right time
Tori Amos could do with an actual definitive one after the "semi-concept" of Tale of a Librarian 13 years ago. If she did a cover that got her some air play she could go Top 10 with a greatest hits now.
Muse should do one before they have to water the quality down much more - if they'd done one after The Resistance it would have been solid gold but now two more make-do albums and they've messed up the high standard of single that they managed to have from 2000 to 2009.

What about old fogeys like me who still buy CD's but don't download or stream and would like a Rihanna GH? :)

Calvin Harris & David Guetta!

Calvin's would look something like-

- Summer

- How Deep Is Your Love

- Under Control

- Feel So Close

- Blame

- Drinking From The Bottle

- Sweet Nothing

- Lets Go

- Bounce

- We Found Love

- I'm Not Alone

- Acceptable In The 80's

- Ready For The Weekend

- The Girls

- Feel So Close

And Davids...

- What I Did For Love

- Dangerous

- Lovers On The Sun

- Shot Me Down

- She Wolf

- Play Hard

- Titanium

- Sweat

- Club Can't Handle Me

- Sexy Bitch

- When Love Takes Over

- Love Don't Let Me Go

One Direction are a big one for me, I'm pretty much expecting them to put out a GH when they reform actually. 16 singles plus a few new tracks is more than enough!
Scissor Sisters could probably do with one too if they're definitely not going to be making more music.
So basically a Calvin Harris Greatest Hits would be 18 Months?

not really
