Tim's Picks: "Oh 2008. The year that started Alexandra Burke's career, Mariah Carey was still relevant enough to gather #1's, Thriller turned 25, P!nk scored her first US #1 and Madonna

had enough relevancy to gross 280 million dollars with her Sweet & Sticky Tour"

Hallelujah – Alexandra Burke

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/Hitcruiser/Third/SeparationLine.png

Where do I even begin. I fell in love with The Burke on The X-Factor and continued to fall harder closer to the final.

With amazing rendition sof Toxic, Unbreak My Heart, Without You and Listen (feat. Beyoncé, iconic iconic iconic) she won the show and snatched the biggest selling single in the UK,

as well as the fastest selling download in Europe.

The release of the song triggered a campaign by Buckley fans to get his version to #1, but with nearly 600K short they were never even close.

The song currently remains the best selling X-Factor winner single of all time.

For me this marks the start my interest in music and the charts, so it had a crazy impact on my life.

Without this song I probably wouldn't even be in this place

Alexandra's vocals are as usual outstanding and I never expected to stan for this bitch so hard.

Beyoncé - Halo

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/Hitcruiser/Third/SeparationLine.png

YES YES YES YES YES. Bey's very best ballad EVER, with Broken-hearted Girl coming very close. The emotion put into this song is unreal and I get chills everytime I hear her sing it live.

Rumour has it it was originally intended for Leona, but I already prefer Bey's version.

The vocals on this are as usual outstanding. Bey never disappoints. The way the song builds up to the chorus has been executed amazingly well and defenitely adds to the power this song has.

Cameron's Picks: "Oh god, I remember 2008 well. Christ, help I feel old."

Kelly Rowland - Work

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/Hitcruiser/Third/SeparationLine.png

This ain’t gonna be easy, WORKKKKKKKK. Put it in. ;) I really love this song but my god, it is so dirty  . I actually forgot this existed for a few years until Frankie danced to it on Strictly and in that moment, I fell in love with it all over again. The freemasons is far too good to be ignored which is why it is my go to version. I am not even a massive fan of Kelly Rowland post Destiny’s Child, but this song is really special. It is everything I love in a modern pop song, the chorus is so catchy and the video is colourful and bold. The middle 8 is definitely the best part of the song. The dance break is perfection and just gets you ready to completely lose it come the final chorus. I am sitting bopping to it right now as I am writing this. It is so Lush

The Saturdays - Issues

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/Hitcruiser/Third/SeparationLine.png

Yes, this is my favourite girl band song of all time. I feel that ‘Issues’ gets far too much stick in The Saturdays forum, and I am sure Tim will back me up with it. I remember when I was doing Standard Grade English back when I was at school, I took apart the lyrics to this song and analysed it. God, it was depressing  ! Vanessa White’s flawless vocals are what really makes this song special for me. Her tone is just so effortless and she sings it with such ease. I really don’t know what Rochelle is on about in her verse. Something about wong kongs which is actually a Chinese take away here in East Kilbride. I would also like to take a minute to talk about how incredible Una’s vocals are on the middle 8. The random chimes that follow it after Vanessa’s line are simply magical and the ad-libs towards the end of the track are life giving. The music video is very simple, but very beautiful with the girls all dressed simply then they have the bold umbrella's to show a hint of individuality. I applaud the team who shot the video. This song will always mean a lot to me for personal reasons which are not really relevant to Buzzjack, so I will not mention them but I really do hope there are some of you who love this song as much as I do because I really am struggling to put into words how perfect it is in every way possible.

Liam's Picks: "One of my favourite years of music and charts  I could have picked so many songs – Up by The Saturdays in particular but I went for a more inspired generic pop choice…"

Jessica Mauboy – Burn

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/Hitcruiser/Third/SeparationLine.png

This is the song that kicked off my love for random locally successful Australian females from talent shows *.* The first song I ever heard by Jessica, and her first and so far only Aussie #1, this is exactly the sort of generic pop I loved from artists like Rihanna but it was new and exciting, I then found out more about Jessica and she was an Idol runner-up in 2006. From Burn grew my love for her many later uptempo bangers such as Up/Down, Pop A Bottle, Beautiful and This Ain’t Love as well as some R&B midtempos like Never Be The Same, Galaxy and What Happened To Us, and she now reigns as one of my absolute favourite artists. I still can’t believe they didn’t launch her worldwide aside from the Eurovision perf and a Commonwealth Games slot that launched to the dizzying heights of around #400 on UK itunes.

Leona Lewis - Run

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/Hitcruiser/Third/SeparationLine.png

Sorry to fans of the Snow Patrol original (I like that version myself), but this has to be my favourite cover of all time. I still remember just hearing it in the Live Lounge and it completely bowled me over, her voice is just stunning on this and brings out so much meaning and emotion with very little effort, making you feel every word. This was rightfully Leona’s third #1 and has become her 3rd biggest selling single behind Bleeding Love and A Moment Like This. It only got better in studio form, with a huge gospel choir big enough to rival Leona and her pipes.

Another great section, even if 2006/2007 were stronger!

I also associate both Issues and Halo with 2009!

Ranking:

1. Run

2. Halo

3. Issues

4. Hallelujah

(Gigantic Gap)

5. Work (never really liked this!)

Not heard: Burn

Tim's Picks:

Alexandra Burke (ft. Flo Rida) - Bad Boys

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/Hitcruiser/Third/SeparationLine.png

YAS BITCH YAS. In 2009 The Beast returned with a pop stomper featutring the one and only Flo Rida. The song was a #1 and up until this day it hasn't aged one bit for me. I've played this song so much and remember completely falling in love with Alex after this. Homegirl had me hooked and with the release of Overcome I was on the floor.

Like I said Alexandra was actually the reason I got into music like I am now and why I joined buzzjack (I actually wanted to know some of ha sales lmao). The video of it is quite amazing as well. A great début single for a great artist. It's such a shame she has flopped into oblivion and is doing musicals right now (Go see her in Sister Act soon)

Alicia Keys - Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/Hitcruiser/Third/SeparationLine.png

The magic this song has. Alicia's vocals really shine in this R&B song. I discovered this song way past 2009 and I've been in love with it ever since. Everytime it pops up on my iPod I cannot help but sing along.

If it were released today it'd probs be a hit, with the R&B influenced songs released lately and this just being THAT good. I relate to it very much as well, despite not really knowing why. It just connected with me in a way most songs don't. I applaud Alicia for releasing this song, it is one of her best songs. I'm sure most will disagree, but y'all ain't got no taste anyway

Cameron's Picks:

The Veronica's - Untouched

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/Hitcruiser/Third/SeparationLine.png

Okay, don’t even lie, you are currently sitting gobsmacked at how much of a major throwback this track is. I actually can’t believe this was only released in 2009, it is giving me serious Hilary Duff 2004 vibes. The guitar is quite heavy on this which is unusual for a pop song, but it just works so well. My god! The chorus is utterly infectious and it just makes you want to get up and do that awkward jumping on the spot whilst shaking your head styled dance. The Veronica’s are also serving serious restless bitch face in the video which adds to the overall attitude to the song. Oh the guitar is also getting another solo during the middle 8 of the track which again, is unexpected. This really is an incredible pop song that does make you feel quite old when you realise how much of a throwback it is.

Jordin Sparks - Battlefield

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/Hitcruiser/Third/SeparationLine.png

From a pop banger to me getting emotional again. I feel like Kelly Clarkson singing Piece By Piece on American Idol. Jordin Sparks deserves so much more success than she has. She really is a truly spectacular vocalists which is demonstrated in this track. Written by Ryan Tedder this song has one of the most frustrating chart runs in history, yoyoing between 11 and 14 numerous times!!!!! It really did deserve a top 10 peak which will still make my blood boil to this day. I couldn’t decide on whether or not to pick Battlefield or Tattoo for the countdown as both are incredible, but I think Battlefield is just such a spectacular moment in her discography that it cannot go unnoticed. There is no denying that as far as modern power ballads come, this really is one of the best things to come out in music. If you disagree, BITE ME. Even the ad-libs towards the end of the song still give me chills to this day. Ugh, I guess perfection can never not get you all emotional. I seriously recommend that you all listen to this song again. Thanks

Liam's Picks:

Taylor Swift - Love Story

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/Hitcruiser/Third/SeparationLine.png

This is a song responsible for one of my favourite chart memories, the incredible top 2 of this and Kelly Clarkson’s My Life Would Suck Without You *.* I still remembering hearing this for the first time on 4Music in early 2009 (technically this is a 2008 song but it was released 2009 in the UK), before I properly got into finding music via the internet in around April 2009! Although she has become one of my ultimate favourite artists, only one song (All Too Well) has ever really topped this sweet and poppy love song, a masterclass in country pop which laid the foundations for Taylor slowly becoming arguably the world’s biggest pop star over the course of the next 6 years.

Lady Gaga - Bad Romance

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/Hitcruiser/Third/SeparationLine.png

If anyone can cause hysteria with a single release, it’s Lady Gaga! I still remember the run-up to this being released, hearing the demo and barely being able to contain my excitement *.* It was actually quite strange to hear the “proper” version after that, given how much I rinsed the demo when it came out, but it soon felt the same and this has become one of my top 5 songs of all time. Rarely has a pop song been so bizarre, bombastic and unique, yet altogether so perfect. I can and will never get enough of this song and its incredible video.

Gosh, that top 4 are all in my top 30 of all time, absolutely incredible

1. Battlefield

2. Love Story

3. Bad Romance

4. Untouched

5. Bad Boys This is a jam but compared to the other 4 it just doesn't compare!

6. Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart Always found this overrated and bland :(

Cami Li wins his first round with a bang and he shares the win with Liam as really can't split that top 4!

Liam- 3

Cami Li- 1

Tim- 1

Never really took to Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart either, I actually preferred Alicia's previous album to The Element of Freedom.

Bad Boys is a tune.

'Beautiful Liar' is my fave 2007 pick, 'Work' for 2008 and 'Bad Romance' for 2009. The latter is in my top 10 favourite songs of all-time.

LiLi - 2

Cami - 2

Catching up with this now, yes @ both Rihanna songs! Heard "SOS" when I was out a few days ago and it still sounds so impeccable.

And a massive YES @ Alicia! Late '09 to early '10 was when I started listening to pop/R&B songs again and deciding I really liked them, and "Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart" was one of those songs (and "Bad Romance" too). The production is just to die for.

No 'With Every Heartbeat' for 2007? :(

Robyn ew

Since when was that hideous Walk This Way cover a highlight of anything?

2010

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/Hitcruiser/Third/SeparationLine.png

Tim's Picks: 2010 was the Year of Rihanna and Kesha, so what would this countdown be without either of them?

Rihanna - What’s My Name feat. Drake

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/Hitcruiser/Third/SeparationLine.png

2010 saw Rihanna at her commercial peak with the release of Only Girl (In The World), Loud and her best single What's My Name.

With those 2 songs she set an amazing achievement. The 2nd single What's My Name topped the chart before the 1st single Only Girl in the US.

What's My Name was a massive song for me in both 2010 and 2011 and is still one of my all time faves. The tropical island vibes

make this song what it is. The catchy lyrics, Rihanna's lush accent, Drake's rap and their chemistry only add to the song.

What's My Name remains an utter bop that is being played on a near daily basis.

Ke$ha - Tik Tok

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/Hitcruiser/Third/SeparationLine.png

I know Tik Tok was released in 2009, but it didn't hit #1 until 2010 and the biggest part of its chartrun was in 2010, so y'all better deal.

It was the debut single from Ke$ha, now known as Kesha, from the album Animal. Tik Tok is what you call an iconic song.

It's lyrics were quoted everywhere, it reached heights in many charts. The song also set many chart records in the US. At the time

it was the most played song on pop radio ever, as well as the biggest selling single by a female in a single week. It was also the biggest

selling song worldwide in 2010 with 12.8 million sold. TO this day it is the 3rd biggest digital seller with 14 million sold.

Back in 2010 this song was literally EVERYWHERE. It was the Call Me Maybe of 2010. People were singing it in school, it was played in the clubs

and on TV everywhere. People may have been criticizing her partygirl image or her "bad" vocals, they were still bopping to it everytime it came on the radio.

I loved and still love every piece of this song. It has aged a bit, but it still sounds great whenever it pops up somewhere.

It set Kesha as the ultimate drunk party chick, an image set by her singles.

If you listen to her albums you can hear her vocals shine on songs like Hungover and Dancing With Tears In My Eyes.

Cameron's Picks:

Eliza Doolittle - Pack Up

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/Hitcruiser/Third/SeparationLine.png

This might seem a little unexpected as a track that I would pick, but come on, it is just so feel good! Eliza is not the most popular artist on Buzzjack and I have seen her get slated often (Big When I Was Little haters can get out) but this song just feels so… right. It seems like it was picked out of an unknown CD from about 50 years ago because it sounds as if it belongs in any period of the past 50 years. The video is just so fun as well, it is very simple but effective. To this day, I am still not sure what the man in the chorus is saying, but the added scatt singing from him distracts me from this and I just go for it whether or not I know the words

P!nk - Perfect

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/Hitcruiser/Third/SeparationLine.png

P!NK - Perfect

And again, I am bringing us back to an emotional song, and unfortunately there is still more heartbreak to come, soz. This song really has the most beautiful lyrics and is probably one of my favourite ever songs from the 2010’s. I have always adored P!NK’s vocals, no matter how many times she is called SCREEEEEEEEEEEECH!!!111!!!1! The video to this track really is heartbreaking and I often find myself unable to watch the explicit versions video due to the bath tub scene. Nobody should ever feel that horrible about themselves and I love the way P!NK communicated this message throughout the song. I know we all love our trash pop and $l*t anthems and laughing at horrific songs, but I feel that sometimes we need to take a step away from that and let reality hit us by listening to songs for their lyrics and messages. Perfect is the *perfect* example to show this and I really cannot applaud P!NK enough for using the song to give awareness about self harm and bullying. If you take anything away from this, please remember than we are all humanbeings. There is a person behind the screen and that no matter where you are or who you meet. If someone is unhappy. Do not ignore them, ask to help them.

Wow that got really deep. I am sorry  I blame P!NK.

Liam's Picks: "A definite lull in the slayage of the past 3 years, but there were still a lot of gems. I found that chart music was nowhere near as good this year, so my two picks are underrated or commercially overlooked (in the UK) gems from two great artists."

Ellie Goulding - Lights

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/Hitcruiser/Third/SeparationLine.png

Back in 2009/10, Ellie was an intriguing alt tinged pop starlet, and this is still her pinnacle despite her becoming a fully fledged popstar recently. Originally only a bonus track on her debut, this was released as a single for the re-release in 2011 (again, playing with the years a bit here because we can, this was on the album in 2010 :kink:) and became a slow burning hit in the US, eventually peaking at #2 and selling 5 million in early 2012 despite it peaking outside the top 40 in the UK. The track is wobbly but airy, pairing Ellie’s unique vocals with synths and indietronica production. The Bassnectar remix is worth a listen too for sure, one of the best remixes I’ve ever heard

Selena Gomez & The Scene - A Year Without Rain

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/Hitcruiser/Third/SeparationLine.png

Prior to her solo career, Selena had a run of huge pop tunes with her band, the highlight being this. Her first album was mostly pop-rock, but the second single from her follow-up is pure sunny Europop joy, with tropical beats and some of her best vocals ever. All of this makes for compellingly unique effort from an ex Disney girl as you’d often expect pop-rock (see: Demi’s first two eras, Miley’s first era, Hilary Duff’s early material). I wish this got the commercial success it deserved worldwide, but it was one of a handful of top 75 hits for Selena and her Scene in the UK and also sold 1 million copies in the US, peaking within the top 40.

What's My Name :music: Tik Tok :music:  brilliant music, can't believe how many years it's been since they were released!

And Lights, justice for that chart performance <_< glad it made some kind of redemption in the BJSC spinoff we had not long ago :P
