The Power of Goodbye could do very well by Madonna, beautiful song and peaked at 91 originally.

It peaked at #6! :P hmm Madonna will be hard to predict as I can't think of any specific song that peaked really low. I'd like to think 'Ghosttown' would get a nice boost and go top 100 but I don't know really!

I think 'Like A Prayer' would benefit the most out of Madonna's collection, but obviously that's already been a #1 so she won't be achieving a new peak with that.

 

Infact she doesn't seem to have anything that peaked a lot lower than its popularity suggests.

True, except 'Like A Virgin' which peaked at #3 despite many people thinking it was #1. Although obviously that wouldn't be a very appropriate song for people to download in the event of her death.

91?!? It would have been quite a shock if any Madonna single had peaked that low in the 1990s :lol: yes it peaked at #6 as Rob said, although even that's criminally low for what is possibly my favourite Madonna song of all time. That intro still gives me goosebumps sometimes :wub:

Lol, I thought it was about 12 but I went on OCC and it said 91, but I forgot it was released with Little Star as a Double A side. So they have them as one.

I'd be all for 'The Power of Goodbye' beating it's #6 peak but I'm not sure it'll be amongst the top Madonna tracks to cherry pick after she's passed away :(

I was thinking about this after Prince's death and thought 'Crazy for You' would be a good shout at being her highest re-charting single. It's well-known and popular, the right tone to be a 'tribute song', and had the misfortune of reaching a peak of #2 on its original and re-release, so all those could factor in.

 

'Take a Bow' only reached #16 here despite being a huge #1 in the US and the lyrics would be really apt, so that too could easily be the most bought and end up with a new peak.

Yeah the morbid nature of this thread did make me think twice about posting in it :mellow: but yeah I do agree that Crazy For You would probably be the one.

Being Boring could possibly beat its #20 peak following Neil Tennant's death. (Or maybe Pet Shop Boys wouldn't do anything following his death but I'd imagine that would be the most successful of their songs in that event)

Given how dominant streaming is these days, it would take someone very very big/well known to beat the peak of a song that already peaked top 10 (I was surprised Purple Rain managed it actually, though I guess it had a full chart week).

 

I'd say given how popular the song is (perhaps more so than the artist) and how it's never gone top 40, that Brown Eyed Girl could easily reach a new peak if Van Morrison were to pass away.

I think 'Hero' will be the one for Mariah, tbh.

If George Michael or Mariah Carey die just before Christmas, one of the highest-selling #2s of all time could finally get to the top - the Freddie Mercury effect, although Bohemian Rhapsody had already been a #1. Maybe 'Wonderful Christmastime' would go top 10 for McCartney too.

 

But then if Kirsty Maccoll was still alive I'd be saying exactly the same about FONY...

Kirsty MacColl died a week before Christmas Day, but that was in pre-dowload days so sales of FONY were unaffected.

I wonder if Fairytale of New York would have shot to #1 had (legal) downloads existed back then - certainly it would have been too close to Christmas (and somewhat distasteful) to give it an official rush-release on CD at the time.

Somewhat unlikely given Bob The Builder sold 360K that Christmas in a famous battle against Westlife.

Nothing re-entered the chart. Most shops will not have had stocks of any of the singles.

I see Nevermind re-entered the top 20 for a week in May 2004, related to his death I guess

but surprised the album didn't get to #1 or something, or any other album of theirs re-entered...

Both In Utereo and Nevermind re-entered the Top 40, and Incesticide and Bleach re-entered the Top 100 on 17 May 1994.

It doesn't have to be. Look at Man in the Mirror when Michael Jackson died. Being Boring is a perfect song to express mourning - it's a song looking back at life and having a few regrets. And I actually disagree that it's not even in their Top 20 most popular songs - I would say it's Top 10. The critics love it. The fans love it. I could not think of a better PSB song to fit the occasion of Neil Tennant passing on.
