Finally a release date announced for the movie version of Wicked 💚 Have been waiting for this for about at least 4 years so I'm so excited that something finally seems to be happening! (Even if it is ages away!)

Who do you want to play Elphaba and Glinda?

And defying gravity on the big screen will be *.* 💖

Really pleased about this news. I would LOVE for them to do the live singing thing that was done with 'Les Miserables'! Hope they know what they want to do with it.

Which one is the one Idina plays? Coz I think Samantha Barks would do that role well. (I speak as if I know what I'm talking about, I don't. I really wanna see the musical though!)

Very excited for this, my second favourite musical I've seen live (behind Lion Kin, ofc!) and the book was equally as good too. Really hope things move smoothly and we don't get any pushbacks.

I hope they don't do too much snipping and we get near enough full versions of the best songs like No One Mourns the Wicked, Popular etc. And I really don't want Something Baaad to be cut but already thinking it will be :(

Samantha Barks would be fantastic I think for Elphaba. I hope we get cameos from the likes of Idina too.

YAAAAAS

I don't really have any worries about them doing the 'big' songs right, but I will be so very pissed off if they mess with No One Mourns The Wicked.

Been pushed back 2 years (hardly surprising when they have NO cast as of yet )

22nd December 2021 now.

Long time to wait. It's gonna be directed by Stephen Daldry (who did 'Billy Elliott I believe).

Wasn't sure whether to revive this thread or create a brand new one, but thought it would be funny to look back and see that it's finally on the way, eight years after this thread was made :D Now with Jon M. Chu ("Crazy Rich Asians" and "In The Heights") as the director

Cynthia Erivo has really gone onto such big things, I can't believe that I first saw her in the failed X Factor musical back in 2014

I think this looks like it could be pretty fun. However, I saw 'Wicked' in theatre last year for the first time and although it was good, I wasn't completely bowled over by it, bar the excellent 'Defying Gravity'. The songs are catchy enough, but I just wasn't that enamored by the story on the whole. I wonder if it'll be easier for me to digest in movie form...

I was the same, I liked the show but it wasn't my favourite musical by a long stretch.

I loooooooooved the show (saw it in 2012)

I am still nervous about this release, mainly as I can't see how Ariana Grande is going to work in it. Fingers crossed it will knock it out of the park

I wasn’t sure about Ari either, on paper she seems right, visually you can see her as Glinda, but I was worried about her vocals being right for the songs that Glinda performs. The newest trailer put that to rest a bit though, we only heard a bit but her vocals do sound quite Kristin Chenoweth, I just hope she puts her own spin on it enough and hasn’t vocally trained to be too similar because you just can’t be Kristin Chenoweth’s Glinda.

With Cynthia, she makes perfect sense as Elphaba already and yet feels so different to Idina’s, can’t wait to hear her do No Good Deed, although that won’t be until part 2 comes out D:

Pre-sales are huge for this and it's just debuted to 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the best-reviewed musical adaptations!

Looks like Jon M Chu has smashed it out of the park....

Absolutely incredible, Wicked is probably my favourite musical and this is everything I wanted and more, sobbed my heart out at the Ozdust Ballroom scene and also of course Defying Gravity. Ariana is an absolute revelation as Glinda, such a layered and nuanced comic led performance, but Cynthia I feel is being overlooked in her own movie rn as she brings such a sense of heart and complexity to Elphaba and her Defying Gravity just might be the definitive version for me, absolutely insane.

Also lost it at

Idina and Kristin’s cameo

as I managed not to have that spoiled, had to try not to scream out loud in the cinema

I will probably go and see this but tbh I've kinda been put off from the press appearances ive seen, idk what it is but there's something that just makes me uncomfortable watching Ariana and Cynthia in interviews. I watched an interview with Cynthia and Renée Rapp recently as well and felt the same to the point I couldn't make it through so maybe it's just her. I can of course separate the person from their character though so I'm glad it does sound worth the watch.

How has the pacing translated? I'm kinda nervous about the run time and the fact that's only act one as well when the Broadway show isn't far off that length in it's entirety

Part 1 is actually longer than the musical  But honestly the time flies by, I remember thinking of the order of the soundtrack and it felt like the songs were coming in quick and I thought maybe there would be a while without a song, but it was just that the film was so engaging and engrossing time absolutely whizzed by! I hate long movies and often get bored and feel like they’re bloated or overstay their welcome, but I can’t think of anything I’d cut here.

With the way they’ve expanded on the characters and particularly the relationships between them compared to the musical there is no way they could have just done one part and still kept the chemistry and interactions that are at the heart of what elevates the show to the level of a Hollywood blockbuster. The friendship between Glinda and Elphaba is explored more, Boq and especially Fiyero feel more fleshed out, it builds a world a bit more which I don’t think they could have done with just one film. It would have felt rushed and I think spitting it also gives it a reason to exist beyond just rehashing the musical, it expands upon it. Of course it’s also capitalism, but the two parts and runtime make sense.

Going to see this on Wednesday. I’m not sure what to expect as I wasn’t blown away by the musical when I saw it for the first time earlier in the year.

The music was good though.

I think this will win over even sceptics of the musical, Cynthia and Ariana both breathe total new life into characters that are such big shoes to fill. It’s so easy to just fall into the hallmarks of each character but I feel like they’ve both really made it theirs whilst honouring the previous depictions. I think on stage you don’t have the same space for the character to breathe so there’s less chance to flesh them out, like Ariana brings this almost selfish vibe to Glinda, it’s a rounded portrayal it’s not just another ditzy blonde popular girl. You get flashes of that in the musical, but I really get the sense here that Ari has lived and breathed this character and interpreted it for herself, she’s just not doing a cute cosplay and singing some songs.

And love that Cynthia makes Elphaba a guarded know it all with vulnerability, she just wanted someone to understand her, you can see the layers break down as her walls come down. The extra time to flesh out the characters on screen really does wonders for everything that I know people at times found rushed or underdeveloped with the stage show, as I feel like one of the things I’m not as keen on is they don’t explain the relationship enough or show it build, whereas here you see all that and have much more of a connection.

That eight and a half year wait (actually twelve and a half year wait going by my wording above) to see defying gravity on the big screen was worth it x

As someone who feels fairly neutral towards the stage show (apart from 'Defying Gravity' which is SO good on the stage and is largely where the hype is for it imo!) I absolutely LOVED this. I was really concerned for the runtime, but honestly, apart from the odd bit here and there, it doesn't drag much! I will say that on one viewing it is a bit overwhelming to take it all in one your first viewing, but that's the beauty sometimes and you just have to rewatch it to really appreciate certain things.

Ariana and Cynthia are both just as fantastic as each other and @Lindsey, I have a few friends who think the same as you in regards to the press tour (and tbh I DO see what you all mean!), but my GOD their chemistry together in this is crazy good. I thought Jonathan Bailey is a near-perfect Fiyero too! He plays that charismatic, cock-sure, arrogant but cool guy so, SO well! But I think everyone was really well cast. I don't think there was a single weak link..??

Jon M. Chu is just a fantastic visionary director. Everything he does seems so "grand" and "big". I'm SO excited to see his Britney movie!

I don't care for Ariana or the character of Glinda but from what I've heard even in the soundtrack Erivo has brought something really special to Elphaba. Looking forward to seeing it.

Agree with Lindsey they have had a weird almost childlke vibe in interviews which is weird enough given they are both in their 30s.
