Wasn’t sure where else to share this but what does everyone think of the announcement Labour and Plyiad will co-operate on over 50 areas of governance in Wales!

Welsh Labour are the only branch/division/whatever of the Labour party i have any respect for. Theyre well run by someone who isn't scared of democracy.

For the first time in over 20 years, a Tory MP had defected to the Labour Party -

And now to await the Twitter archeologists unmasking of some Uber-problematic thing he’s said or done.

Didn't realise it had been that long.

I imagine, without knowing much about him, that he can't have been particularly ideological and is being pragmatic. May have just ridden the wave in 2019 in order to get into Parliament and doesn't want to be associated with this crap any longer, for which, good on him.

I assume the last one was Shaun Woodward?

Says more about where Labour are than the tories if the Tory is defecting to Labour!

I would say it is likely self-preservation more than anything.

Is the MP that defected the prick who wears the Union Jack face mask in the commons every week?? Another reason he’s a joker!
The fact that he can easily defect shows that there is little difference between the parties. The media screams for democracy, which you can have in any style, as long as it's Tory.

what's next? looking up a voting record?

seems the guy had been critical of Johnson for months, doesn't matter if one of the Labour MPs is slightly more right-wing when this happening right now causes a body blow to the PM's authority. If it's a career move he'd have defected to Corbyn's Labour in the same situation.

Not sure Coybn's Labour would have accepted the defection though.

I totally agree it is right to be critical and question the defection, but it doesn't happen very often does it? Hardly a piece of evidence to say "Labour are no different to the Tories" when it's happened once in the last 20 years. Like others have suggested and like the data shows, the Red Wall expected change and levelling up to happen and it hasn't. The 2019 intake know what's happening next. Like every sensible person said, Brexit has resulted in absolutely zero benefits for ordinary people and saying "oh but they will be longer term" is completely pie in the sky stuff.

I have sympathy with that as not thrilled with a lot of choices that Starmer has made but have to be pragmatic too. Under any circumstance Labour government would be many times better than a Tory one especially this horrific one.

Nothing to cheer about, if you actually care about transforming society into a left-wing utopia. He is just another Labour right wing centrist now, when we should be purging our workers' party of them!! Angela Eagle for example? Gtfo!!

I'd rather the MP for any given constituency was being whipped to vote against the Tory government rather than with them given the parliamentary system we have.

also a big, nay, crucial part of building a left-wing utopia is actually convincing more people to support left-wing ideas. which you don't do by talking about purges, look, Starmer just finished his own stalinist purges can we be done with those for a bit?

he's one MP either way and it'd be far more ideal that his seat were being held by the 2019 Labour candidate but that's more an indictment of our system (and the horrific circumstances of 2019) than the Labour Party. This is a small win and it doesn't mean the Labour party is just accepting anyone.

Best way to keep Tories in is to forget who is the real enemy of the working classes. Disagreeing over how best to achieve fairness does not mean one is actively working against it. One party is. The one in power that lied and fooled long-time Labour voters.

He apparently called Owen Paterson 'a cunt' last year - that's a guy I can do business with. I say, this is a good thing. Hear him out etc.
Sooo when will Tory Starmer be restoring the whip to the greate politician of our generation? :) If he can accept a Tory, why not a left winger...

Because he wants to be seen as Tory lite, be won't
