Listening party is happening at 9am on Friday on Radio 1. Sam's going to be on the Breakfast Show choosing his favourite tracks from the album.

One Last Song has got to be a contender for one of the worst songs of the year.

In your opinion... Such a negative soul. This is the second comment today I've seen from you slating Sam you saddo.

Loving the album so far. Hoping it smashes!!!

Its ironic that it is called 'The Thrill Of It All' when Sam Smith's style of music I am sure most of us will agree being mostly easy listening and gentle you would really describe as 'thrilling'!

I think most of Buzzjack will rather call Sam Smith's music hard listening because it's hard to listen too :basil:

(I need to hear the album as I personally loved his debut)

I loved his debut album but I wasn't impressed by anything that was available pre-album release. Listening to the New Music Friday playlist on Spotify though, 'No Peace' with YEBBA is really, really good! Gives me a glimmer of hope there will be a couple of other gems on the album.

I wouldn't call myself a saddo for holding the same opinion as most of Buzzjack, it's not that much of a big deal lol ;o

Sam in general gets far too much hate for one silly mistake in an acceptance speech and singing about his heartbreak and relationship, how dare he.

That aside, this is a pleasant listen. It feels very different to his debut aside one or two tracks (see below) but here is my initial first listen:

08 Too Good At Goodbyes: this one has really grown on me since it's release.

06 Say It First: I love the lyrics in this and sounds pretty different from ITLH in terms of production and feels very stripped back but the tone feels familiar

07 One Last Song: So very Amy Winehouse. Glad hes got at least one song so far that is very different to his previous sound

04 Midnight Train: Can see this growing but pretty snoozy on first listen

08 Burning: I love this! That piano is beautiful...even if it is a song about him smoking

09 Him: fantastic. That beat, the choir, the sentiment, brilliant

07 Baby, You Make Me Crazy: lovely listen, again another self explanatory title

08 No Peace (Featuring YEBBA): This one is interesting after the documentary hearng Abbey talk about it and the inspiration behind it for her and how it came to be written

05 Palace: Pretty similar to Midnight Train but probably feels like the most ITLH track out of the ones so far?

08 Pray: Similar to Him, love the choir too

04 Nothing Left For You: Pretty boring to be honest which ruins the decent run since Burning

05 The Thrill Of It All: pleasant to listen to but definitely wanted more

07 Scars: strings intro  feels very acoustic and natural

05 One Day At A Day: similar to the title track

Nah. His voice his horrendously whiny and a bit too much for me, personally. The acceptance speech thing is just amusing!

Edit: oh and I find the album just as bland and basic as RagNBone Man's tbh. :( (I say this as someone who actually thought his debut was decent, for the most part)

'Like I Can' remains his absolute best for me!

The first openly gay man to cover the NME whilst grabbi...

:kink:

^

With slight trepidation, I'll give his new album a go soon. Lol at how he's described it "(like) having sex with your sadness" :drama:

shouldn't radiohead be credited on Midnight train, it's the most blatant Creep rip-off

I've ever heard, the start is identical, the same chords thru the song

come on Thom, go sue him!!!!!!!

I don’t think that’s the reason. I think it’s that his voice is so whiny! And his diction is awful.

I think this is a great follow up to his first album - I really like Sam and don't understand the hate he gets on here. Looking forward to seeing him at the 02 next year.
