Justin is seen as cool now? Even with his recent success I still feel uncomfortable telling people that I love Justin

I'd say yes here, as long as you specifically refer to post-Where Are U Now Bieber.

Justin Bieber is incredibly cool right now I think! A lot of people I know have been loving him since Where Are U Now and are quite happy to talk about him.

Honestly I get the sense with this era that commercial success isn't the priority for Gaga, so if that's true, Perfect Illusion likely wasn't a bad choice.

They're not going to scrap the album just because the lead didn't do well. Lady Gaga said it's a very personal album so I very much doubt she'd be okay with delaying or scrapping it in fear of having a commercial flop (and I'm sure money isn't an issue anyway, she's got loads of it)

Who cares who's cool or not really :')

But yeah I feel like it's definitely much more widely accepted to like Bieber than it was a few years ago!

The kids at school love Bieber at the moment. Even the older lads love his 'bangers'.

Lady Gaga didn't take off until I was in uni and was in decline by the time I started teaching so I'm unable to address whether or not she was ever cool.

I hope James can hold on til 6pm so he gets the Big Top 40 #1 at least

I'm sure he'd really appreciate that meaningless accolade!

Half of the show's listeners probably know no different and take the #1 on that show to be official, so it would be a pretty big profile boost for the song.

That said, why that show hasn't changed its format yet is beyond me. They might as well just change it completely to an airplay chart, iTunes has become so unrepresentative. Either that or take the live Spotify top ten instead of the iTunes top ten.

True, most people I speak to think the iTunes #1 is the official number 1.

I still enjoy it when two versions of the same single are in the Top 10 and they have to play it twice! Amazing.

Yes the rules have always seemed made up as they go along

It's a real shame that it's actually the official chart which seems to have become meaningless in the eyes of the public, even though it means the most. People might know what's #1 on Spotify or iTunes but probably not officially as hardly anybody listens to the official chart and it's barely referenced in the media anymore, apart from when a record is broken, like Ward Thomas becoming the first UK country #1 album.

We used to get blanket media coverage of every new #1, especially if it was a novelty song (would never happen anymore), or something that stands out from everything else musically (this never happens anymore either, if it ain't mildly tropical house-inspired pop or dance then it ain't coming in :()

I just think it's because people only seem to like songs by random dance acts / Justin Bieber or male ed sheeran types.

If you're female you're f***ed really. Ellie and Emeli should be doing much better and even Ariana has only just got a top 10 hit. It's a shame and I hope the music climate changes because music released this year has been great but we're still celebrating trash at the top of the charts.

It's even harder for new artists too, M.O and Dua Lipa would've done much better a couple of years or so ago too I think. :( It actually is low key upsetting to see.

The Big Top 40 show is more interesting than the Radio 1 show now at least, plays records that don't get into the "play zone" on Radio 1! Makes me laugh though that they reveal the current top 10 at 5pm like it's going to change at all in 1 hour's time.
The Big Top 40 is a mess of a chart, it really makes me laugh. Songs that drop out the iTunes Top 10 while they're on air effectively drop off the chart

52. Shawn Mendes – Don't Be A Fool

72. Giggs - Lock Doh (feat. Donae'o)

79. Hailee Steinfeld & Grey - Starving (feat. Zedd)

86. Pentatonix - Jolene (feat. Dolly Parton)

Quite a boost for James Arthur now which suggests either the Big Top 40 is actually great promo, or the X Factor spammed him on the show tonight.

Not one play nor mention of James Arthur on tonight's show :o

They did however play Millionaire on almost every soundbed between ads so maybe that will see some of boost?
