y'all overanalyze the smallest shit I swear

*also I guess we shouldn't give a shit about spoiler alerts considering everyone here has already watched it but if you haven't i'm sorry if this rant reveals a lot of key plot devices*

Sometimes it's about looking at the bigger picture rather than small details. Try to approach it like a painting rather than an SAT problem. Any of those people could have asked her what was going on or tried to understand what was going through. That's why Clay felt guilty after listening to his tape. Everything we do affects everyone, and that's the bottom line. It's kinda unfortunate, because a lot of the key scenes were cleverly thought out and well-written, and this reaching to bash this show seems a bit bandwagon-y.

Toally agree! The bottom line of it is that they are trying to say the supposedly small things you do affect people in ways you'd never realise; you don't know what's going on in anyone's life. It might not be so realistic but I think it's more effective like that. I can see why people have issues, perhaps constructing a narrative about suicide in such a way is not the most.. ethical way to deal with it (for want of a better phrase) but for me as a piece of television I think the way they did construct it was perfect. It sort of takes you on the journey of how people "typically" feel about suicide/mental illness, you just think "get over it Hannah, just suck it up and deal with it" and then you feel so awful for all that went on when you realise the whole story and it's too late.

if you noticed, all of the people who actually cared about her and felt very bad did think that THEY killed her. the others just tried to deny and brush it off as a crazy dead girl's problems. everyone on her tapes had a chance to listen to her entire story so they were able to judge themselves their role in all of it. she didn't say someone's action was more serious, just that almost every one of them was a reason she CHOSE to end her own life. the 'did we kill her?' thing was only a conversation point between Tony and Clay as far as I remember, so it's not exactly fair to say Hannah just wanted to shift blame on others and did it for revenge. Like I said before, her intentions did not seem to shame these people publicly but to make them think and to maybe do things differently next time. She didn't even make any tape for her parents after all explaining everything (which was pretty cruel but I see how she thought it was a better choice).

This was not a documentary where they needed to show that many people who commit suicide have mental issues. This was just one story. It's not supposed to be a guide how to do things or how to not do things. Just basically a very realistic (if you ignore the fact Tony looks 26 years old) example of what can happen if you are in the wrong place, including mentally, at the wrong time. Everybody who watched it will make their own conclusions.

People are talking about the subject now and this is really the most important thing. Nothing will happen without conversation first.

as for the 'this will make people want to make more suicides', it sounds a lot similar to the whole gay propaganda thing many people love to use as a reason there are so many gay people in the world. no real factual justification, just the first thing that pops into their minds... :/
I thought this was utter perfection. Incredibly thought provoking and gripping. Very well acted. I was so emotionally involved and the last few episodes were so sad, the last one seeing her kill herself was brutal! It makes you think about how little things could affect someone. I loved it and love how everyone is talking about it.
I think it's really really well done and I think everyone can take something different from it. I know I've suffered from anxiety/depression before and been in a bad place mentally and it depicts what it's like to feel alone and be in a bad place mentally so well imo.
I can understand why people are critical in thinking it promotes suicide for attention or revenge (initially), but the way they handled the actual suicide scene itself... It's so brutal and honest, and then the parents finding her... They didn't glamourise it. It was awful, and really powerful.

The entire show really captures teen life, especially for girls. And the process in which rape culture is just continuously pushed aside. I'm impressed.

Not sure they should go for a season two though?

So I've just spent the last few days watching this and found it incredibly gripping! The whole concept of the show was fantastic with some really difficult scenes to watch.

The soundtrack is INCREDIBLE

I'm not sure how they'll spin a second series. It seems like they've set up for one, but maybe just a one-off special will suffice?

Just finished this. Wow, this has really affected me! I bawled my eyes out at the last episode and I never cry at stuff like this! Lol. The song they use in one of the last scenes, Only You, is so perfect and I can't stop listening to it. Also when they play Vienna when Hannah's alone in the hallway  Really great soundtrack

The last few episodes were so heartbreaking and hard to watch. To see what happened to Hannah and her just giving up... I so wished there was a twist and she was alive  You really have to watch it to the end before judging it!

One thing I noticed was that the date when they were in court was November 10, 2017, so it happens in the future. That's nice cause it hasn't happened yet. If there is a follow-up I hope it's like an alternate ending where somebody steps in and saves her or something but that's wishful thinking!

finished this today and oh my god it was so good, but like liam said definitely difficult to watch at parts,

especially the scene with hannah slitting her wrists

. I definitely think it was a show that needed to be done/story that needed to be told though. And even if it was difficult to watch at times it's so much better to make scenes like that that are graphic and real instead of sugarcoating it like most shows do. The whole thing was just so powerful and raw, I really hope they do a second season now. Although I do have a theory about the ending -

I don't think Alex actually shot himself, I think Tyler shot him and tried to make it look like a suicide, and it makes sense that he took Alex's photo off that thing, like he's going to kill/get revenge on all of the people he had photos of? and it would explain why he had all those guns too

Just finished the series and reading through the thread now and that last spoiler you posted Alanna was exactly what I was thinking as well!

Finished the show now. It was good, but I kinda guessed all the twists. I did like how the characters were fleshed out though. Agree with others about the point of Tony, I still don't even know why he had the tapes really and was the custodian of them. I'm pretty sure they gave us an answer, but it must have been lame as it made no sense to me. I am probably in the minority, but especially up until the party I found Hannah really unlikable to times as a character. I thought during Clay's tape it was particularly horrific. And Courtney surely has to be one of the most annoying TV characters of all time.

As for a second season, it's definitely happening. I found Alex to be a more tragic character than Hannah at times but I certainly think

he tried to kill himself. There were too many red herrings for it to have been Tyler imo.

Guess we'll see!

Fab! There is definitely more to cover so I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes.

Apparently they're getting a new showrunner so hopefully it adds rather than detracts from the first season.

I'm not sure what other plots they can fit in there besides what happened with Alex and Bryce's impending trial but apparently in the book

Skye also has suicidal tendencies so maybe Clay's arc will consist of him possibly getting a second chance at saving someone?

Just finished watching it and I mainly agree with the consensus in here. The first few episodes, I was kinda like, this is just another teen drama with over dramatic issues and things being blown way out of proportion. Of course, watching the whole thing makes you realise how necessary they were though because it does genuinely build and build to the point where she is at an absolute low. I was being very sceptical about what could be on Clay's tape because I thought it would have been a bit of a jump for his actions to be a contributory reason

so I'm glad that she realised that was ''her fault'', or rather the previous events. I think his reaction was natural after literally being shouted at several times and him being very nervous to start with anyway. Its another reason WHY I HATE TONY though because of his 'yes, you killed Hannah', well actually DON'T SAY IT AS IF HE DID A HORRIBLE THING

.

It was actually really well done overall, sensitively handled without being in your face over issues and also being OVER-SENSITIVE in regards to the reasons which is what I had initially feared. The only concern is that

if she had tried to get a response from the teacher, Clay & the counsellor, I do think she would have tried to get a response from her parents at least. I know she had the concerns that she wasn't good enough for them and children in that position often don't speak to their parents BUT they did seem to have a great loving relationship that I think, in the real world, she would have at least subliminally tried. The parent's discovery was one of the most heartbreaking scenes I have ever seen because of that great relationship as well as the fantastic acting.

. ALSO

I don't think that many people would have cared about a school magazine, that 'reason' was a bit iffy for me in terms of set up. I get the purpose of it enabling her to let out her feelings though and for her to place trust in someone in knowing them.

. There's always going to be few uncertain bits though and I do think it was done a LOT better than I ever expected. Tony is still one of the worst characters ever though.

I'm disappointed that there's going to be a Series 2 though. Aside from the shot with

the guns

, it ended on the right note with it being clear about how each of the characters responded now that they had time to deal with it e.g. how guilty/not guilty they felt. I just think that the entertainment industry was just able to know that, to preserve a story, you have to let things END. I know its about making money but I'm just unsure about how they can do another full season without damaging the story in this one.

I watched the first episode on the flight back from Poland and I'm not sure how I feel about this. I'm not drawn to continue in the way that most of you seem to have been
