Posted February 15, 20178 yr Hi All! A part of my new job, not really new now that I've been here 11months, is data analytics. In particular I use this tool called Tableau. The best way to approach this type of tool is not to be data driven, but to come to it with a set of questions. Like "What did Ashton enter in the 8th decade" or "How many points have I given Espen" up to a wider "How many American artists have we seen in BJSC?'. Part of what I'd like to achieve in 2017 is to start to use these tools as an easier way of interacting with our vast amount of data. I imagine this happening in four stages over the next 10-12 months: Stage 1 - The Songs Songs of Thread to be converted to an interactive dashboard that you can search. Stage 2 - Simple Stats The beginning of the Statistics stage will aggregate statistics for the finalists Stage 3 - Moderate Stats Semi Final data will be dashboarded Stage 4 - Difficult Stats Complete level of detail. The ability to see who you voted for in what competition & a table of who you gave/received points to/from. First three are achievable without too much hassle, just a significant time investment. However once the initial outlay has been done then we will start to see our resources threads updated a whole lot quicker - I will simply refresh the data source. I'm on holiday for the first three weeks of March, so the first Stage won't be live until some time in April. The final stage is more complex purely because of the data that will drive it. It'll require a lot of trial and error to get the underlying data in a format that we can utilise effectively. I've mocked up a quick dashboard using my TBO IX Final scoreboard to show you the kind of thing we can do with it. Press play below, and Tableau Public will open in a new window. You can't break it so click about and have a play! So yeah this isn't really a feedback exercise because it's something I threw together in like 15 mins with a tiny shittly formatted dataset and isn't a reflection of the final product. Pretty much a proof of concept. When I'm ready to start posting stage 1 etc then there will be a chance to give some feedback on design and give me some of the questions you'd like to ask the data. Purpose of this thread is to make y'all aware of something that is progressing to the POC stage in the name of ~transparency~ and see what y'all think of the concept rather than the detail. I'm currently on an intensive advanced training course for Tableau with work so this is no amateur hour affair, we will end up with a smart looking, very functional tool.
February 15, 20178 yr Author Thanks guys! One of the things we can do with it is create mobile and tablet versions to optimise it for viewing there so people who mainly use BuzzJack on the iPhone can search the songs of thread really quickly and easily in a way that's been specifically designed for phones
September 9, 20177 yr Author HAI Stage 1 will be live before the next contest. Songs of Thread is dead. Long Live the Songs of Thread.
September 10, 20177 yr Author Thanks everyone! Can't wait for everyone to see the first stage Looks fab but ew Numerals I can never work them out :/ Noted! Will look at replacing them for stage 2.
September 10, 20177 yr Noted! Will look at replacing them for stage 2.I think you can just give everyone a choice to view either the Roman numerals or the contest number, unless that's not available. Also maybe add something to distinguish the 12-point system contest stats from the 18-point system contest stats? idk, just going off the template you showed.
September 10, 20177 yr Oh yes, I'm fond of Roman numerals but I think switching to regular numbers would make it a lot quicker to find whatever you're looking for, so hopefully that can be implemented! Really looking forward to seeing everyone's entry history pages and whatever else is on this database.
September 10, 20177 yr Author Thanks everyone! It's really helpful to see the reaction and everyone's comments. Especially once the first bit goes live in the next couple of days! I think you can just give everyone a choice to view either the Roman numerals or the contest number, unless that's not available. Also maybe add something to distinguish the 12-point system contest stats from the 18-point system contest stats? idk, just going off the template you showed.I can't translate Roman numerals into Arabic numerals within the tool itself unfortunately. A 12/18 point identifier is a good idea! Will add that in for the next release for sure. looks amazing! I'd also welcome an extra column for regular numbers :kink: I'm really a fan of the Roman numerals so an additional column for the Arabic numbers would be a good idea. Will add this in to the next release too. Amazing! Maybe you could take over the new Buzzjack improvements also? Probably still wouldn't come any sooner
