March 9, 20179 yr Leona Lewis Spirit may have sold more than Ed Sheeran's X but lets not forget X has so much more sales to come, including close to 25,000 this week so it will eventually out sell her. That said, Leona's achievement remains wonderful, her spirit album and singles were extremely successful but i think Ed Sheeran's popularity is on a complete different level.
March 9, 20179 yr It's interesting looking back at the chart positions week on week that Leona sold more at #1 in that year than any other artist in any week except Leon Jackson, who outsold even her highest week 3 to 2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_in_Briti...ber-one_singles Also that Bleeding Love was knocked off #1 by a posthumous duet between Eva Cassidy and Katie Melua. Truly the industry was in a different place. For all we talk about it being completely different nowadays albums and singles though, even back in 2007, with a few exceptions, the artists and bands getting #1 singles and getting #1 albums were vastly different; the two charts weren't correlating that strongly. March 9, 20179 yr Julia Michaels was at #48 on Monday's update so I hope she can crack into the top 40 tomorrow if Little Mix miss out Little Mix are actually looking to hold on right now, big gap between #39 and #40! Bruno will climb in if they do miss out though.
March 9, 20179 yr It's all if's and but's. 10 years is a long time ago, everything was different. The fact of the matter is Leona and Ed both achieved amazing things with Spirit and Divide. :D
March 9, 20179 yr Even as somebody who likes Ed Sheeran reasonably well as an artist and doesn't mind hearing his whole album in the chart show tomorrow, I think this week's chart is awful for three reasons: Firstly any single he chooses to release from the album a few months down the line is unlikely to be able to beat its peak in the chart from when it was an album track only, which removes most of the excitement from this album campaign pretty much as soon as it starts. Secondly, because once the OCC inevitably decide that their chart rules are becoming ridiculous and change them to exclude tracks not nominated as singles (or something similar), most of these tracks will randomly drop off the chart. And thirdly, as a result of this, everything else currently doing well in the chart will have a ridiculous-looking chart run with sudden 10-place drops and rises. All this has been said before but if even chart fans who like Ed think this week is terrible for the chart, something must be wrong :P (Having said that it's generating a lot of interest in the chart and people like me who usually browse this forum rather than post very often are feeling compelled to comment and generate discussion, so I guess it can't be all bad)
March 9, 20179 yr Honestly I'll buy any reason as to why people are not happy about the Ed domination but songs having odd chart runs really is ridiculous. Who cares? I mean surely it has happened loads before where songs have had odd charts runs because a big event (like the Olympics or xmas) has caused a big influx of songs to temporarily get a big boost and more sustained hits have gone down and back up because of it.
March 9, 20179 yr Also that Bleeding Love was knocked off #1 by a posthumous duet between Eva Cassidy and Katie Melua. Truly the industry was in a different place. Just in case anyone is alarmed by this post, I feel obliged to point out that Katie Melua is (still) not dead. :D
March 9, 20179 yr What is Divide on track for? 650-700K? My money is on a torrent of streams added for today to push it over 700K! I'm talking more than Stormzy proportions, a Sheer, violent disturbance of the atmosphere!
March 9, 20179 yr Just in case anyone is alarmed by this post, I feel obliged to point out that Katie Melua is (still) not dead. :D Just her career is :teresa:
March 9, 20179 yr What is Divide on track for? 650-700K? Last week Stormzy's Album achieved 22% of his weekly Album Sales added on Thursday but he had benefit of "campaign". If Ed manages 16% of his weekly Album Sales added today then he will break 700K. It may be a struggle though given Ed's Album was more successful on pre-order (and consequently a higher percentage will have been added at the beginning of the week).
March 9, 20179 yr It will be interesting to see which ed ones get played they surely wouldn't play all 16
March 9, 20179 yr LOL why is Leona Lewis mentioned in this topic, how random. Some people just throw her into conversation to try and make her relevant.
March 9, 20179 yr Personally I think what Ed Sheran has done is quite an achievement , regardless of his music is liked or not. Just shows how popular he is but at the same time there's nothing else really appealing ! He's sold almost as much as Adele sold in total last year! Him and adele are in a different league ! Good for him!
March 9, 20179 yr Little Mix are actually looking to hold on right now, big gap between #39 and #40! Bruno will climb in if they do miss out though. Yes! :D I didn't know No More Sad Songs had 3 versions on UK iTunes top 500. So, Little Mix should be able to hold on in the top 40. :P Edited March 9, 20179 yr by Jason
March 9, 20179 yr This has not been the case for years. Justin Bieber had three singles doing incredibly well at the same time just over a year ago. Popular acts often have two singles on the go. Indeed, and its most likely a move that is purposely done - the artists with the most hits and airplay inevitably have big album sales too!
