It's been floating around for a while, but looks kind of confirmed here...

I feel this will harm her more than help her. I think being a talent shown judge in this day and age should only be done if it will really boost your career or its past the point of no return (JHud). She's still a powerful force and being attached to a tired format is kind of beneath her at this stage of her career. I don't think exposing her personality even more when she already is kind of going through this 'mini-backlash' will help either. (see JJJJJessie J)

I don't known why they're bringing it back as it was a flagging concept even before it was cancelled.

Yeah, I'm not sure it's the best move either, especially as it means we probably won't get a European tour. The only star in the US, talent show judging seems to have benefited, is Maroon 5.
She was fab as a guest judge but I'm not sure either, they probably want someone who's currently a big name but I agree it could easily do her more harm than good. It'll get solid viewing figures but I'm not sure she can afford to expose her personality this much in what feels potentially a critical period for her career. It probably won't air until early 2018 though so her little backlash period will probably be over

American Idol‏ @AmericanIdol 16m16 minutes ago

We are ecstatic to welcome @katyperry as a judge on ABC's #AmericanIdol! #KatyOnIdol #Idol

Not sure how I feel about it, for the reasons outlined above, but hopefully she'll be great!

It's not back until 2018, so will have been off air for two years, so might draw in quite a few viewers, also Disney have promised to help promote Witness, so it's a good deal IMO. It also means she gets big slots performing on Idol.
AI helped J-lo during the Love? era though. Might help Katy too.

Grant actually has a point. I'm not entirely sure about Mariah or Nicki but it definitely helped J-Lo and Keith Urban when it came to promo slots for their eras. IIRC X Factor US also had Demi who was pretty current and she gained a ton of promo slots for both the Unbroken and DEMI eras. Clearly artists becoming judges in shows while in the current radio mainframe is nothing new. This could be helpful for Katy.

That said... hoping for a small chance that Keith will come back as a judge

Being a coach on The Voice really did wonders for Blake Shelton's career too, his just doesn't reach beyond North America. I'm also a bit apprehensive about Katy judging on Idol but am willing to tune in and see how it goes for her. I think it could go either way.
I'm pleased that she's going to get the exposure and extra promotion from the show, hopefully it will help her chart performance out a bit more. I am kind of worried about what Froot said that she could end up being the next Jessie J though. I remember a few of us were discussing how unlikable she came across in the Capital/Radio 1 interviews back when she was promoting CTTR and I'm worried that she could come across like that here too :/

Bad move I think. Doing TV is not something you should be doing at your peak. And American Idol, an old show and an old format is even worse. Unless perhaps she's trying to move out of music altogether for a few years after this album and is taking this as an opportunity to get some experience to help her out with that.

I can see her hosting a talk show or similar.

Her peak though?

Well, she's not past it. Is she even 30 yet? Her last album era was pretty successful and anchored by strong #1 hits.

Taking a TV contract now seems like a failsafe in case this era goes badly which doesn't seem confident. Which is a little strange given the effort that's seemed to go in so far with the restyling and expensive features and videos.

She's 32.

She's definitely had her peak, which was around 2010-2013.

Her age has NOTHING to do with her peak! So many artists have hit their peaks long after they hit 30. Madonna is one of them. Sia is another!

If the age thing was aimed at me, I was purely answering the other posters comment asking how old she was.

I've edited my comment to make it clear the comment around her peak has nothing do to with her age.

Mainly the other poster, but I was unsure about your post as I thought that was what you meant anyway!
