June 27, 20178 yr I don't see how the Tories can honour the GFA and be propped up by the DUP. How can they be neutral in the power sharing talks when the DUP can withdraw from their C&S agreement if something happens at those talks they dislike
June 27, 20178 yr Mayhem announced after the deal that the Tories and DUP "share many values in terms of wanting to see prosperity across the UK, the value of the Union, the important bonds between the different parts of the UK". This is meaningless waffle. Labour and the Lib Dems would claim to share the same vague values. After all, they wouldn't win many votes if they said the opposite.
June 27, 20178 yr How ironic that the Conservatives are shaking their magic money tree to secure a deal with the DUP but during the election campaign May told us there was no such tree. -_-
June 27, 20178 yr How ironic that the Conservatives are shaking their magic money tree to secure a deal with the DUP but during the election campaign May told us there was no such tree. -_- Yes, if only theyd bribed the whole electorate with promises of billions pounds infrastructure investment instead of slagging off those who did make promises they might have looked less like lying hypocrits as they as ever flip and flop whichever way the political wind blows. I like to think my constant criticisms of Mays shortcomings have been borne out much sooner than expected.... To be fair if i ever have any positive comments on her behalf i will post them. I can do that for george osborne: dead woman walking. He recognises a good quote when he steals it....
June 29, 20178 yr Queen's Speech clears commons by 323 to 309 - a 14 majority. Link Some good news today is that government announced that Northern Ireland women will now be able to get abortions for free on the NHS in England. Link Edited June 29, 20178 yr by Envoirment
June 29, 20178 yr I think Corbyn needs to get his act together, he's been on cuckoo planet since the election. Right now it seems he is blindly following the Tories down the Hard Brexit route. Must admit I find it funny him outing memebrs who voted against him... he did the same thing for years and years! :D
June 29, 20178 yr Some good news today is that government announced that Northern Ireland women will now be able to get abortions for free on the NHS in England. Link While this is a positive, it should be noted that women from NI used to be able to get NHS abortions in England as well - and I know several who did so. The same government that's now in a kerfuffle over it breaking human rights etc. are the ones who quietly removed the ability to do so in the first place. Of course I'm sure they're enjoying patting themselves and each other on the back now for their kindness and magnamity now.

Of course I'm sure they're enjoying patting themselves and each other on the back now for their kindness and magnamity now. Standard practice for this lot. After 2010 they made a habit of axing various programme, introducing a watered down version and claiming it as an exciting new programme.

Must admit I find it funny him outing memebrs who voted against him... he did the same thing for years and years! :D Oh Corbyn's not blindly following the Conservatives over "hard" Brexit, he knows exactly what he's doing. Corbyn has ALWAYS been in favour of Brexit, he's just never been out and proud about it.
June 29, 20178 yr Oh Corbyn's not blindly following the Conservatives over "hard" Brexit, he knows exactly what he's doing. Corbyn has ALWAYS been in favour of Brexit, he's just never been out and proud about it. This is why I had a hard time supporting Corbyn during the election. The problem he has is that there are still a huge amount of people who are still pro-EU. While Labour can be proud of what they achieved in the election, I feel a lot of people supported Labour because they wanted them to be an opposition to a Hard Brexit...
June 30, 20178 yr This is why I had a hard time supporting Corbyn during the election. The problem he has is that there are still a huge amount of people who are still pro-EU. While Labour can be proud of what they achieved in the election, I feel a lot of people supported Labour because they wanted them to be an opposition to a Hard Brexit... I did a fair bit of canvassing this election, and only a very small % of people who voted Labour said to us that their main motivation was stopping or 'softening' Brexit (and I can only remember one person using the term "Single Market" at all).
June 30, 20178 yr Author Mayhem announced after the deal that the Tories and DUP "share many values in terms of wanting to see prosperity across the UK, the value of the Union, the important bonds between the different parts of the UK". This is meaningless waffle. Labour and the Lib Dems would claim to share the same vague values. After all, they wouldn't win many votes if they said the opposite. Nor would they be believed if they promised massive investment, while claiming only *some* of the people would have to bear the cost...
June 30, 20178 yr I did a fair bit of canvassing this election, and only a very small % of people who voted Labour said to us that their main motivation was stopping or 'softening' Brexit (and I can only remember one person using the term "Single Market" at all). I would counter argue that's because Labour & Corbyn did a very good job of not mentioning Brexit at all during the election. Labour need to be strong opposition to the Tories - right now it appears as if they will do everything to ensure we follow through with a hard Brexit.
June 30, 20178 yr Labours problem though Roo is that a lot of their core voter base have been swung on the scum and daily hates lies over the EU so a hard Brexit appeals to them. By staying quiet they were able to capitalise on some of the UKIP collapse which ultimately benefited them. Balancing act will have to come over this parliament of keeping them on side vs risking turning off the urban, moderately wealthy, well educated under 40's who swung firmly their way in the election.
June 30, 20178 yr it was more an anti-Tory vote than a Pro-Corbyn vote, to an extent. There was no other realistic alternative, so for anyone that's had enough of rich folk hammering the poor for a decade while they get tax breaks that was that. 2 years from now, as things get much worse for people, attitudes towards both parties may change. At which point, short of a Macron-like figure emerging from obscurity with a fresh start, it'll be a case of BrexitTweedledee and BrexitTweedledum, but at least with labour you get bonus decent policies to help ease the plummeting economy for the less-well-off a few years.
June 30, 20178 yr Author Yes they would. That's simple economics at work you raging incompetent dumbass Temper temper! The fact that Labour didn't win, despite their magic money tree, proves that enough of us were not fooled by Corbyn's smoke & mirrors. I would counter argue that's because Labour & Corbyn did a very good job of not mentioning Brexit at all during the election. Labour need to be strong opposition to the Tories - right now it appears as if they will do everything to ensure we follow through with a hard Brexit. Sounds good to me - that's what I've been rooting for all along!
July 1, 20178 yr The fact that Labour didn't win, despite their magic money tree, proves that enough of us were not fooled by Corbyn's smoke & mirrors. But the Tories, despite giving no actual financial details on promises which they kept or dropped by the end of the campaign, have found that the Magic Money Tree actually exists! Have you been living in a virtual reality lately? 1.5b to the DUP for a bribe for a start. Millions to support a fire that appears to have been caused by cutbacks. Even Tories (hi Chris Patten) have said things need to change and the rich need to give more to right some society wrongs. Now, you can quote the super-rich Rees-Mogger types if you like (who believe in survival of the fittest, as they sell fags and other death-delivering ideas down people's throats) but their "arguments" for essentially being callous and selfish are now shown up to be smoke and mirrors, as you say, for their own agendas. The same people who lied about Brexit. Some of us were not fooled by THEIR smoke and mirrors. People die. Death by Cuts. Rich Tories in the richest borough effectively appear to have allowed 80+ people to die to save 300k cash and not spoil the view for rich neighbours. The police will, I assume, do their job, and the government, I hope, will be criticised.

Have you been living in a virtual reality lately? 1.5b to the DUP for a bribe for a start. Which is still just pocket money compared to what Corbyn planned to spend. Maybe he should have run a less effective campaign, then the Tories would have had a majority, and £1.5bn would have been saved? Millions to support a fire that appears to have been caused by cutbacks. Even Tories (hi Chris Patten) have said things need to change and the rich need to give more to right some society wrongs. The same people who lied about Brexit. Some of us were not fooled by THEIR smoke and mirrors. You do remember that support/opposition to Brexit was *not* based on party lines, right? Rich Tories in the richest borough effectively appear to have allowed 80+ people to die to save 300k cash and not spoil the view for rich neighbours. Has that *seriously* been cited as a reason? If so, I bet I can guess who made that claim...
July 1, 20178 yr The desire to save £300k by fitting cheaper Aluminium cladding to Grenfell tower instead of Zinc is accurate. It has been reported that colouring of the panels was also a factor in the swap
