July 14, 20178 yr 01 Herzebania // Agnes - Release Me [bJSC 13] 02 FSR Rontvia // Sara Bareilles - Love Song [bJSC 4] 03 Bhangra // Dixie Chicks - Not Ready To Make Nice [bJSC 3] 04 Mdice: Ke$ha - Dolla/Tik Tok [bJSC 18] 05 Mdiče // VV Brown - Shark In The Water [bJSC 16] 06 Kathaldazia: Eva Simons - Silly Boy [bJSC 19] 07 Kingdom Of Shadow // Margaret Berger - Will You Remember Me Tomorrow? Just a nice little pop bop, that top 10 of the first 20 winners is incredible!
July 14, 20178 yr Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Alphabeat winning the starting point for the whole vetoing process? As winners were being too predictable and "cheap" (used just to get an easy win etc..)? I think it was a couple of months later before it really started to kick off and we brought the banlist in, sorry no, we tried to bring in the veto and were pushed back down into the shite banlist. Silly Boy and The Spell defo got the ball rolling. Think the straw that broke the camel's back was the 21/22 winners. Marina and the Diamonds man!
July 14, 20178 yr Numayania should have won BJSC 19 with Alcazar, then FSR Rontvia should have won this with Anna Abreu or I should have won with Tone.
July 14, 20178 yr Yeah one of the earliest things I remember in BJSC is loads of people moaning about how obvious a winner 'Hollywood' was.
July 14, 20178 yr #leaks It was Hollywood that really started things rolling. XXIII was the last contest before some form of "anti-cheap" rule came into play It has been noted and commented on that BJSC is still moving at speed towards a ranking of this months new releases, this month being especially cheap. [My entry very much included] I said my reason for entering Riverside would become clear, i'm hoping that by entering a track that's set to hit #1 by the weekend will serve as a wake up call to just how cheap the contest has gotten. [so much that the main criticism was of me being a hypocrite rather than the entry being overtly cheap] To rectify the situation i propose we: A] Ban everything from the current era of an artist with an AF. So moving the first two single ban to cover B-Sides and the Album as well as any live lounge covers they do in the course of promoting the album. || Example - This would rule out everything from the Sweet 7 era, so not just Get Sexy and AAG. Rabbit Heart would be banned, everything off the promo would be banned and everything from the new album would be banned to. Along with any new b-sides. The remainder of the back catalogue would still remain available. B] Ban eveything due to be released within 4weeks of the contest end. While it won't stop the Say It's, it will prevent people looking at that bloody release schedule and waiting on things to leak in time. The release schedule is a blight on this contest. Time to eradicate it. While they seem overly harsh, imo it's needed. By forcing people away from the Release schedule we make them search for entries more inspired. Discovering music you wouldn't otherwise have heard is the main reason this contest exists. It'll be a shame that we might lose some people, but at the end of the day we could gain people that have been put off by the cheapness. Hopefully by the end of the year we will be at a stage where we can limit the use of material by Buzzjacks artists of the year and Ban everything by an artist with an AF [not counting those awaiting archiving eg Delta] I agree in principle, but I think we need to steer clear of using the release schedule as a barometer because it doesn't necessarily always give a fair sign of cheapness (I've used the Quicksand example countless times, but I'm sure there are more entries that have had limited release etc., plus, these days you don't even need official release to be cheap). I like the idea of banning everything from the current era of artists with AFs, but banning B-sides seems a bit much (really, I doubt most of them would either get much support or be that familiar to most people, so it would count as a discovery), and then having a clause whereby you can apply for special dispensation to send something if it clearly is in the spirit of the rules to send it, but violates the letter of them. I prefer Rich's idea of a monthly banlist in all honesty. Much more flexible...your rules wouldn't have covered Boys Will Be Boys, Under The Sheets or Hollywood...or Starry Eyed when it wins XXIV -_- It was just a starting point for us. A monthly ban list would be good, but there would be moaning about who gets to chose the songs and why they were on there hence why i went for a blanket RS ban as a starting point. You could use your idea of a clause to send the stuff like Quicksand that would otherwise have been blocked despite being quite inspired. The AF's; well if we don't ban the b-sides and just the album and live lounge covers that would kill what some people like to do and raid the album [Guilty as charged, i raided the new Lily one when i moved to Australia] At least we've got a startin point now where we can go from and get this cheap sorted once and for all. I could counter argue that i've banned my favourite artist :smoke: I think a banlist of 5 would go down better than a blanket banlist, but eh. We need to see if this contest even ends up bad enough to be able to push this through - how the final top ten ends up could change things drastically. When was the last time someone even sent a live lounge cover? They could counter-argue that you've left the door open for something because you've banned your favourite artist :P And I'm sorry to have to inform you that if we were to have a banlist of 5/10 songs, Gabriella Cilmi - Woman On A Mission would probably be on there for the next contest, it's getting quite the hype starting to build up :( I given this a little thought and have come up with the following concept which will allow countries to risk entering something "uninspired" but it could backfire on them leading to their entry being DSQ'd from the contest; and it would be pre-determined by factors outside of BJSC mods thinking X song is cheaper than Y song debates. I would allow all countries to enter what they liked but if the song fell foul to one of the following criteria during the contest (Semi Finals & Final) it would result in the song being DSQ'd: 1. Added to the Radio 1 (A, B or C) Playlist. 2. The video reaches the MTV Hits Playlist: http://www.mtv.co.uk/channels/mtv-hits/playlist 2. The track reaches the Top 40 on UK iTunes or the national chart. 3. The track makes the US Billboard Top 10 or US iTunes Top 5. What do you think, as I think this is the best of both worlds as it still allows the new release schedule to be raided but with a huge element of risk? That's...quite an interesting compromise actually! I'm not entirely sure if I agree with the US clause (I'm of the opinion that Don't Stop Believin' was a good entry, but there's probably a worthy debate in there), but the basis of UK-centric monitoring is quite an inspired idea! It would however need tweaking - for example, it doesn't currently incorporate anything to guard against the obv BuzzJack favourites which won't necessarily become hits (Silly Boy, Boys Will Be Boys, the new Gabriella Cilmi...), but it's a very good starting point! I shall announce a blanket ban on all tracks from an artist with an AF's current era (not counting B-sides, Live Lounge covers et al), along with Rich's 4 points and a reservation of the moderating team's right to have a banlist when necessary.
July 14, 20178 yr I love reading through old mod ideas that didn't get implemented, that suggestion of thisispop's sounds almost hilariously authoritarian (or it would be if we did it with the current level of veto rules), your track blows up in the middle in the contest and you're OUT. Might be the only thing that'd stop the Ramry-esque chancers xx Inspiration wise The Spell is a fairly eye roll worthy winner if only because the tracks beliow it all looked like models of inspiration (and what a novelty to have a Danish, Finnish and Norwegian track in the top 5 with no Sweden), but it's... decent, way worse than Music Everywhere and Butterflies (which will forever remain the best Tone track entered here). Similar with Silly Boy, Alcazar would have been way better and a Melfest hit pales in comparison to the apparent ultimate of the old release schedule hype.
July 14, 20178 yr Songs being disqualified mid-contest would have been absolute pandemonium, thank the lord that never got implemented
July 14, 20178 yr There's a difference between vetoing something within a couple of hours of the semis opening and what TiP proposed which could have seen your song DQd the last day of the final with no right of replacement. At least we allow you to replace!!
July 14, 20178 yr Author This is my current league table. I will update it after every ten songs. 1. The Girl And The Robot - Royksopp 9.6 2. Not A Love Song - Uh Huh Her 9.4 3. The Show - Lenka 8.9 4. Love Song - Sara Bareilles 8.7 5. Not Ready To Make Nice - Dixie Chicks 8.5 6. Shark In The Water - VV Brown 8.45 7. Robots In Love - Beautiful Small Machines 8.4 8. Silly Boy - Eva Simons 8.1 9. And Then We Kiss - Britney Spears 7.8 10. Quicksand - La Roux 7.7 There were two songs with a score of 8.4 so I added a bit to VV Brown's score as I prefer her song to Robots In Love.
July 14, 20178 yr I think the Eva Simons track is awful. I remember looking back through the winners and thinking I must check out the landslide victor only to find the song was a dull and tacky mess.
July 15, 20178 yr Author 21. Lorikeet - Boys Will Be Boys - The Dolly Rockers Beverley Knight and Lily Allen were returning winners with Sugababes and Madonna also making the final. My vote would have gone to Muse's Undisclosed Desires. A fierce battle of the dolls ensued with The Dolly Rockers beating Dollface (Miss Jamaica,Kopecka) by just 5 points. Come In To The Night by Velvet for Tinnmark was 3rd. I like Boys Will Be Boys more than I thought I would. The producer has done a fine job mixing the guitars, keyboards and the girls' harmonies. I like the fact that they are singing in common English accents, not trying to sound American. Dolly Rockers auditioned for the X Factor in 2006. After some brief success around the time this contest was held, things went downhill and they auditioned again in 2013. After getting a no from the judges, they split up. 8.3 out of 10. S0_yaSxWB1U

July 16, 20178 yr Author 22. B.a.N.G. - Under The Sheets - Ellie Goulding The Big Pink's excellent song 'Dominos' just failed to reach the final. Paloma Faith,Rihanna and Example all managed to do so but it was victory for Ellie Goulding who finished 18 points ahead of The Good Natured with their song 'Your Body Is A Machine' (Mdice). There was a tie for 2nd place decided by number of votes,so finishing 3rd were the cast of Glee with Don't Stop Believing (Xanaga). Ellie's distinctive voice is used to good effect in her song and I like the chorus. A decent single to start her career but she's done better since. 8 out of 10. oujtnVwwP64
July 16, 20178 yr I didn't discover Ellie until she blew up with 'Starry Eyed', took me a lil while to realise that wasn't actually her first single and it was in fact 'Under The Sheets'! I bought 'Lights' soon after 'Starry Eyed' was smashing it anyway and 'Under The Sheets' was a real highlight straight away! I still love it a lot now  I miss how consistently good she was in her first era. 01. Herzebania // Agnes - Release Me [bJSC 13] 02. B.a.N.G // Ellie Goulding - Under The Sheets [bJSC 22] 03. July 18, 20178 yr Author 23. Quotosibb - Hollywood - Marina and the Diamonds We're into 2010 now. The line-up for the final included Lady Gaga,Mary J Blige,Shakira and returning winner Kesha, who finished 4th. My vote would have gone to Wonderful Life by Hurts. Marina won by a huge margin of 65 points with Zombie by Natalia Kills 2nd for United States Of Jack and Number One Enemy by Daisy Dares You 3rd for Hendinia. Hollywood is a good song,I like the piano and synths but not her vocals. She finished 2nd in the BBC's Sound of 2010 to the winner of the last contest,Ellie Goulding. 7.4 out of 10. n1VTcJfL7RE
July 18, 20178 yr She finished 2nd in the BBC's Sound of 2010 to the winner of the last contest,Ellie Goulding. Then the 3rd place in Sound of 2010 won the next contest. Coincidences!

Such a quirky catchy song you can't help but sing along to. Under The Sheets is still one of Ellie's best too, one I don't always go back to as much as I should but I'm always reminded of how fab it is when I do actually go back to it.
