August 2, 20177 yr Plus it kind of implied that feminism is about man-hating. I wasn't talking about feminism in general though I was talking about feminism in music and the lyrical themes I thought constituted feminism in music. It was man-distancing not man-hating I was referring to, there is a difference. I think I was too narrow minded with these themes originally as I said. Anyway, we should get back to talking about the song on here, although it was my fault for this tangent we have gone on! Edited August 2, 20177 yr by Slitherhisser

August 3, 20177 yr DEBATABLE VSRrqw3d-Wg you can have a passion for boys and not be straightYou are right! I need a term to describe someone who is attracted to one sex without ruling in or and out their attraction or lack of attraction to the other sex, or sexes, etc. Idk :kink: Edited August 3, 20177 yr by Spynz Munich
August 3, 20177 yr the song/video combo is killer *.* The video was instant for me and I love the message and all the celebs she managed to get in it *.* I was a bit unsure on the song at first but I am bopping to it so much rn <3
August 3, 20177 yr Charli is VERY hit and miss for me so I didn't know what to think about this prior to having my first listen. Nothing groundbreaking but more on the hit side as it's a fun effort from her, without being at all annoying! I could appreciate that she was going for a fun sound with After The Afterparty but that song was quite jarring for me, unlike this one. My favourite element of the song is the Mario coin noises, they were a cool addition. (I like the gender role reversal idea behind the music video, that was a smart concept alone but then add on the fact that the guys are famous and bam, super smart viral territory.)
August 3, 20177 yr It's sexualising men like our society does automatically with women in its sub conscious. I think there should be less sexualised songs anyway! My original statement on here about thinking 'Boys' wasn't very feminist themed was out of disappointment, as I think feminist themed songs like 'Pretty Girl' by Maggie Lindemann are much better than songs about relationships, which there are too much of. But yes I do know realise that 'Boys' is feminist in a different way with the gender reversal. Here's a similar video from back in 2004 with a similar sexualised gender reversal theme. Supposed to be a bit like a gender reversed version of the 'Satisfaction' by Benny Benassi video I think! Edited August 3, 20177 yr by Slitherhisser
August 3, 20177 yr I was really hoping to like this after being a fan of After The Afterparty but this is my least fave of her singles to date for me. It's just SO dreary & that annoying Gameboy (or whatever it is) noise... nonono.
August 5, 20177 yr Went to a film screening at BAFTA tonight and put this on the big screen after. Pretty sure people were convinced it was a BAFTA nominated short film until someone turned it off 🙄 Diplo at that size tho... 😍 Doing my bit for the xcx promo
August 5, 20177 yr I was really hoping to like this after being a fan of After The Afterparty but this is my least fave of her singles to date for me. It's just SO dreary & that annoying Gameboy (or whatever it is) noise... nonono. The Gameboy noise you refer to is probably the PC music influence, Charli and the other producers of the track seem to be getting a lot of influences from PC Music, some of her songs are produced by Sophie, a PC Music producer. I much prefer the dance side of PC Music anyway (and I would love Charli XCX to do a song with a sort of Easyfun - Laplander sort of style of instrumental) but that seems to be rare sadly compared to PC Music pop production. My favourite Charli XCX song would be Break The Rules as it has one of the best drops ever in a song I think! I also really liked Nuclear Seasons, when I used to listen to nighttime Radio 1 back around the time it was first released, it was a favourite track of mine, so a return to a dark wave/ synthpop spund would be great too for her! So disappointed both in After The Afterparty and Boys, not because of the lyrics and vocals which are good, but the production which is too slow and ponderous for my liking and too minimal, lacking vibrancy imo, especially in 'Boys'.
August 5, 20177 yr Everything on 'Number 1 Angel' >>>> this but I'm still loving it. Great that it's looking like it'll be a big hit for her as well.
August 5, 20177 yr Everything on 'Number 1 Angel' >>>> this but I'm still loving it. Great that it's looking like it'll be a big hit for her as well. Agree with this entire post. But she always said she preferred the stuff off 1 Angel to most of the stuff for the new album/the singles, but this is clearly a safe option for her. Would love it if this could go top 10.
September 1, 20177 yr The original version of "Boys" is #20 on iTunes currently and #55 on Spotify and she's just released this 'acoustic' version: GkZzzvPtdJI Really, really like this - much more than the original! Hoping she can score a proper hit with this, it's still criminal that "After the Afterparty" missed the top twenty - it was everywhere!
