Oh please that old chestnut

She wasn't on Spotify people don't like it

She on Spotify she buying a number 1

That's just ridiculous

And I don't think she put her back catalogue on Spotify to get automatic top adds other artists have been number 1 on top playlists on day 1 and not beeen accused of buying a number 1

Is it seriously hard to believe she getting bigger even though she didn't release much in 2016 she was never far from headlines

Besides if streaming didn't exist and no artist were on Spotify she probably would still have a chance because people would get it another way

What you said here would be true if it wasn't for a fact that she got to #1 on every major playlist straight away, this is a precedence unseen before. No denial she has a huge fanbase and that she would do well whatsoever but the payola / the contract obligation is clear.

I think a good example of no / little payola is Pink: she's top-30 in overall Spotify charts, yet they don't move her up from 40 something position on hot hits at all, despite being in the official top-5 for 2 weeks now.

yes, never before a song was been straight added to #1 on Hot Lists on day #1, took ages for Pink to be added and was only at the bottom part, where she has stayed since, despite being #1 on itunes and top 5 overall, love Taylor but if this is not payola...
Any idea why all of XXXTENTACION's songs are climbing? :o It's fantastic!
What is payola?

When a label pays Spotify money to put their song on a playlist.

So basically people don't listen to songs they like on spotify they only listen to the song which is No.1 on every playlist, if this is the case and Pink can't climb because she is on position 40 it shows the charts are not reflecting the artist or song, just what position Spotify decided someone should be.

People are not going on Spotify to listen to Taylor Swift or Pink! they are just putting on the first thing that comes to hand on a playlist.

So Spotify shouldn't count towards the main chart as unlike i-tunes where you specifically buy that song on Spotify the views do not necessarily mean the person listening likes the song they are just putting on a playlist because they can't be arsed to search.

If spotify dropped the playlist and just had a search function the chart would look much different wouldn't it?

If Spotify dropped their playlists the chart would move even slower as people would solely use the Chart for searching music.

In short, people r lazy

And no doubt that chart would be filled with considerably older songs since most 2017 tracks that aren't major releases would get very limited traction on their own; Mr. Brightside could be in the top 20 every week!

But spotify could have a front page with newies like itunes

with all new releases equally presented

And there all week not just friday only

I agree with this so much. I kind of actual despair at the chart because of this and it's more manipulated than ever before. I miss the time of 4 years ago so much. :(

But there's nothing we can do about it, just gotta accept that's the way it is now.

I do agree with this, however even on iTunes people are influenced by the top 100, even more so the top 10. Same for the 59p weekly selection (which in itself is designed to give those songs a boost chartwise).

Though the top 100 is controlled by what people are buying, my point is that people are often quite lazy in terms of finding music and easily influenced by what the masses are listening to.

I have found quite a few songs I love through Spotify playlists and it is one of the biggest appeals of that service so I have no problem with this. I do think paid for streams only should count compared to the free version. When I had that I would listen through songs I didn't care about simply because I didn't want to waste one of my 3 daily skips. People with paid for streams are more in control of what they listen to and are more likely to move past songs they aren't interested in.

Labels basically OWN Spotify though

Exactly. I don't have a problem with Payola, it keeps Spotify going and most of the time the songs that go on Hot Hits UK etc are relevant songs that are getting popular, it's not that big of a deal. Even though it does dictate the charts to an extent, it's always been like that with Radio/shops/download sites choosing to promote certain records/tracks over others.

Yeah and there are always priority artists to promote for each major label so not a really big deal.

Think that might be securing Dua's return to #1 next week already then, unless Taylor's video really works wonders for her!
Really hope P!nk can be moved up the Hot Hits playlist. It could get to #1 if it was higher up on spotify playlists imo.

Big drop for Taylor, but I kind of expected it (but I wasn't expecting her to fall off of number 1!) First day streams were a fair bit of people checking it out, out of curiosity. As I said elsewhere, beyond initial hype, it doesn't strike me as the sort of song to have longevity, Taylor or not, so it'll be interesting to see it's performance (and I suspect that now I've said this, it'll do the complete opposite and still be top 40 come January 🙃🙃🙃)

Hopefully this is her SIO and she has the equivalent to 'Blank Space' up next!

don't have time to do a whole update at the moment but Dua is still #1 with 432k and Taylor is #2 with 370k.

not a whole lot else going on either except that XXXTENTACION song is inexplicably still climbing, now up to #69 (his other album tracks are falling though), so that is possibly a future hit to watch for.

Honestly it's not trash like Look At Me!, it's actually a really bloody good song and I'd kill for it to go top 50
