Andrew's ReviewNow That's What I Call Music! 59 aka Now 59, was an Autumn release in 2004 featuring 43 tracks and 7 UK #1 singles of the era. This volume was the first in the series to feature Maroon 5, Natasha Bedingfield, Eric Prydz, JoJo, Lucie Silvas, Deep Dish and Michael Gray.

 

Another 6 #1's were available to choose from but were overlooked. These were The Streets – Dry Your Eyes, 3AM by Busted, Nelly's double A side Flap Your Wings, ex-Westlife member Brian McFadden – Real To Me, Ja Rule's only UK #1 single featuring R. Kelly and Ashanti titled Wonderful and finally Eminem with Just Lose It. Along with these omissions, we were also denied hits by Anastacia, Outkast and Britney Spears who all featured on the previous volume, as well as hits by Green Day, The 411, Duran Duran, StoneBridge, Kasabian, Destiny's Child and Avril Lavigne.

 

This volume marked the only occasion in the series where we saw hits from The Libertines, Hoobastank, Duncan James, 3 Of A Kind, Khia, Ice Cube, The Pirates, Houston, Danzel and Eyeopener.

 

Artwork Rating: 6/10 Good

I like the simplicity of this artwork. The logo seems to be set upon some ice/snow, with a pleasant dark backdrop with glowing stars. A very subtle use of colour, and a slight festive theme leading up to Christmas, and the reverse of the volume could be a close up look at a decorated Christmas tree. One of the last simple designs we would see.

 

Disc 1 Favourite: Eric Prydz – Call On Me

A pure workout anthem which would become Eric Prydz' biggest hit in the UK. A fresh sound from the tradition dance music around at the time, and good to see it getting to #1 for 3 weeks. Some years later I had a go at mashing this song up with Brimful Of Asha from Cornershop and it worked quite well!

 

Disc 2 Favourite: Michael Gray – The Weeknd

A weekend anthem to get any weekend started right with the feel good lyrics. An essential party track for any weekend playlist!

Overall Rating: 4/10 Very Poor

There are parts of this volume which are ok at best, but the majority of the music, especially the second half of Disc 1, is just a sleep fest. There is little to get excited about, and that mostly sums up the quality of music in 2004 for me. A few needed omissions should have been included to help increase the quality. Things would at least start to get a bit better from 2005.

Ironically what I did notice was included in the advert was the rather ambiguous claim that this volume contained "no filler." :o

 

Forgot to mention Do You Know (I Go Crazy) on Disc 2, brilliant tune too! Great vocal version of Robert Miles' Children.

 

Just noticed they left out Armand van Helden - My My My :( They would also leave out the second version that charted with Tara McDonald on Now 64.

One of the best winter Nows for me this volume. The side is only let down slightly by a filler-ish CD2, but CD1 is packed with several of my favourite singles of 2004 which more than makes up for it. I love the artwork as well, bit of a Northern lights theme going on. I've kind of exhausted all my praise on 2004 over the last two weeks, so all I will add really is that of the songs that actually hit #1 this year, I can count the ones I actually love on one hand. (Rough translation: I'm muting 'Call on Me' on the Plug.dj when it comes on. Most pointless dance number one of its time for me. And 'Baby Cakes'. Soz in advance Andrew)

 

Anyway. Top 5s as always:

 

CD1

1. McFly (asking me to choose between this and 'Love Machine' is like asking me to pick a favourite child. But I went for this one in the end solely because it silenced their critics who said they only got to number one with '5 Colours' because of the Busted connection. Just a really great pop single this, and one of their finest)

2. Girls Aloud (Eric Prydz robbed this of number one in my view. I actually thought they'd gone mad when I first heard this, but by the time it was released it was one of their best singles for me. With that dance routine and that chorus and that guitar riff, it was to them what 'Tragedy' was to Steps)

3. V (aka the only time Xenomania collaborated with a boyband and hit paydirt. Such a feel good, summery song. The fact V weren't bigger is criminal in my view. Being launched at the same time as McFly probably didn't help)

4. Scissor Sisters (stunning fourth single this. Jake and Ana sound incredible here, and I'm gutted this wasn't a number one because it sounded like it could've been in my view)

5. Keane (another flawless single from their debut. Again great vocals from Tom Chaplin)

 

CD2

1. Sugababes (as I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, one of those Sugababes singles that seems to be far less remembered than some of their bigger hits, particularly those that didn't deserve it. This however deserved far better than #8 and an in-out chart performance. Lushly harmonised and orchestrated. Props to Heidi's vocal on this in particular)

2. Kelis and Andre 3000 (awesome collaboration this. Love Andre's rap especially)

3. Mousse T and Emma Lanford (I always found it bizarre how Mousse T took until 6-7 years after 'Horny' to follow up its success. But a great effort nonetheless, one of the better dance records of that time)

4. Deep Dish (one of the few 'looping house' records sampling an 80s hit I had any time for. It had class that was leagues above the others)

5. Dannii Minogue vs Flower Power (one of Dannii's best singles for me this. Again deserved to be bigger than it was)

 

Loved the McFly, Streets and Destiny's Child singles on disc 3 - the latter two a glaring omission in my view. My picks from the omissions: Ashlee Simpson, V, The Corrs, Delta Goodrem, Marilyn Manson, Brandy, Kristian Leontiou, Goldie Lookin' Chain and The Zutons.

Bit of a poor Now. Went for Scissor Sisters - Mary (Keane Bedshaped a close second then GA Love Machine) and Dannii on Disc 2

I'll be hosting the Now 59 listen through tomorrow evening on plug. I'll be starting at 7:30pm with pre-party from 6:30-45ish for people to play whatever they fancy or some omissions from the album. Hopefully see some of you there :)

I've been thinking a lot about this Now quite recently. I bought it from the pound shop as it'sbalways been on of my fave nows. Not amazing, but extremely nostalgic. The tracklisting is a MESS though. So I decided to re-order it a bit.

I really think that would've been a far stronger and more representative order of the tracklisting. No Blue or Daniel flipping Bedingfield as track 1. Instead we have the other Bedingfield and Eric Prydz mobster smash.
