It's funny, I've always loved that performance but watching it there it looks quite amateur, they are not quite in sync, it's not quite showy enough, it could do with a bit more pizzazz.

She will manifest this, she is determined! :cheer: (Lol it probably is about the documentary but she is making it seem way more grand than that, so cheeky)

Mel B looks fantastic in that clip, and loving her hair!

It being 25 years since her leaving announcement feels like it puts into perspective just how quickly she left... because honestly it doesn't feel like long ago since the "Wannabe 25" and "Spice 25" releases, and now we've reached the 25th anniversary of her departure! :drama:

Will always wonder what might have been if she'd stayed. Whether her claim that she would have left after the Wembley shows in September would have happened, or if she'd have had a change of heart and stayed.

Also lol at Mel B responding to this Instagram post: https://www.instagram.com/p/Cs1pfIzq2ez with "The happiest day of my life🤪" !

And they never recovered. They only released two more songs, both of which struggled to get to no.1 :(

Now technically there were 3 singles post-Geri. Viva Forever is accepted as being a 5 piece line up single and counts towards Geri's #1s, even though it was released 2 months after her departure and promoted by them as a 4 piece. Regardless, if we count it as post-Geri, then this most definitely wasn't a single that struggled to get to #1. It sold 277,911 in its first week, over 200k ahead of the #2 on 76,000. It stayed at #1 in its 2nd week with 112,000 sales, still very far ahead of the #2 on sales of 60,800.

Goodbye was certainly given a run for its money, yes, but "struggle" doesn't feel like the right word for a single that sold a massive 380,711 copies in its first week, even though it's true that the #2 was close behind them, about 8000 copies less. Those sales made Goodbye their second fastest selling single, only behind 2 Become 1.

Holler/Let Love Lead the Way was considerably ahead of #2, so there was no struggle there either. It achieved 106,159 first week sales. The #2 song sold 65,000, which is 61% of the #1 sales, and 41,000 copies behind. 106,159 sales made it the 26th highest #1 sales of 2000. There were far weaker selling #1 singles around the same time as Holler:

08/10/00 - 60,000 - All Saints - Black Coffee

15/10/00 - 65,471 - U2 - Beautiful Day

22/10/00 - 48,250 - Steps - Stomp

29/10/00 - 106,159 - Spice Girls - Holler/Let Love Lead the Way

12/11/00 - 60,500 - A1 - Same Old Brand New You

In a way, IF we are to believe the rumours, it feels like she quietly left the band right after they had completed the Wembley shows in 2019. :drama:

Fulfilling her "leave after doing Wembley Stadium" dreams after all :cheeseblock:
Unlike other recent anniversaries of key events, their social media hasn't acknowledged the anniversary of Geri's departure.
Love when Jay decides to clear with FACTS. Their success will never fail to impress me, a pop band has never done it since!

I suppose they still feel like this is a negative event! Not something that can be given a celebratory angle, which is the general vibe of most of their throwbacks.

JAY REALLY SLAPPED WITH THE FACTS

:cheeseblock:  So many impressive stats! 380k sales was so extraordinary (which makes it such a pity that it's one of their most forgotten singles now - clearly at the time it struck a major chord).

According to SpiceGirlsNet, the VHS release of Spiceworld The Movie topped the UK film charts on this date in 1998! Selling 270,000 in its first week. I didn't realise (or maybe just didn't remember) that this happened on the same day that Geri's departure was announced.

Mel's said this before that she thinks these nicknames were given because Top of the Pops magazine "probably couldn't be bothered to remember our names", but that's never been the perspective of the person who came up with them (Peter Lorraine), just that it was a fun/lighthearted feature! I'm sure she means well, but it kind of makes out like its origins came from a rude place, but it didn't.
