remember that piece about 40 anti-EU Brexit academics on the front page of the Sunday Times last week?

They have a much smaller article on a letter from 1400 academics in favour of the EU.

Now, would one call that bias?

If only I could find out who owns the Sunday Times....

If only it wasn't behind a paywall...

If only it wasn't behind a paywall...

well I dont pay for it either - there are other sources.....

meanwhile, The Daily Fail has extended it's ring of Betrayers to include Jeremy Corbyn based on a speech he hasn't given yet, front page. So front page melodramatic propaganda intended to "guide" public opinion before anyone hears the speech...

Davy davy calls JC a snake-oil salesman, which is nicking Trump's nickname, after he has been selling snake-oil lies for 2 years, and failing to do his job. Also before hearing the speech.

The i reports US dairy producers giving a glimpse of our non-EU own-trade-deal future:

they want to undercut the UK milk industry and standards, being allowed to sell crappy milk from cows with infected udders, and presumably kept in poor hygiene conditions which allow cows with infected udders to exist. Goodbye British Dairy farmer jobs, cos it's not as if they aren't already living on a knife-edge....

Now the Tories may say "NO!" to this idea. In which case the vague trade deal may also be at risk (whatever it is)? Who knows. Certainly not Liam "sacked" Fox and Davy 'thicky" Davy.

I assume you just saw the headline on a newsstand, rather than being a secret Mail reader. :teresa:

Is what you saw : 'Corbyn's Brexit betrayal: Labour leader to snub millions of voters by refusing to limit migration and kill off dream of striking trade deals'

I did post a comment to that story, but only to point out that the policy change will be moot anyway.

Somehow I can't see the Mail accusing Corbyn of betraying even more millions of Labour Remain voters.

ISTM Labour are trying to appeal to two kinds of Labour supporters

1. Their traditional supporters - the working class

2. Millennials/Remainers

Unfortunately the beliefs of these groups are sometimes in conflict.

all he has to do is appear to be appealing to both groups without actually committing to anything. His speech seems to be asking for a say on EU trade deals without being part of it. I may be misunderstanding how the EU operates, but I THINK Norway, Turkey, Switzerbankland can't do that. They pay for access, not for negotiating deals which full members vote on. If the UK were to be given that sort of deal then they would also ask for same, creating a 2-tier membership: full, and part.

I don't see that happening as other countries might also feel part-membership is preferable. That leads to an exodus of full-membership.

So, really it's just pie in the sky, it's not a breakthrough of realisation, and as Dr Brian Cox pointed out, despite everything Corbyn has yet to clearly articulate the ADVANTAGES of leaving the Single Market. He is merely parroting that people voted for it, and in an ideal world his wish-fulfilment (same as the Tories wish-fulfilment) is unlikely to come to pass.

So he will still get splinters up his arse from sitting on the fence for 3 years....

What this means is that thanks to Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour Party are now firmly committed to leaving the European Union, which I imagine will cause some consternation with many within the Labour Party, as well as with the Corbynites whom are now going to realise that their poorly-bearded messiah is selling out their future.

If ever there was a time for the Lib Dems to step up to the plate, it's now.

I hate that 'people voted for it' cop-out. 37% of the electorate did. 48% of actual voters voted to stay in. Remain has a 10 point advantage across the WHOLE electorate.

I’m uncomfortable with him committing to an exit as a labour voter at the last election. Curious to see how things play out in Scotland over the next two years with people who switched back to labour or went Tory last year because the Tories wouldn’t quit their obsession with the constitution at elections where it’s f***ing irrelevant. Going to be interesting to see how many switch allegiances to SNP/Green or even a right wing indie party.

We cannot leave the customs union and have an open border with Ireland. That’s the simple fact of the matter. So this big speech doesn’t impress me at all because it’s the absolute bare minimum we have to do to avoid the dissolution of the GFA. This entire shit is driven by ideology, not proper facts not logic or actual common sense. It’s baffling and frustrating and I hope my generation can come to power soon so that we can undo the damage done to us

So do i! Youthquake needed...

Totally called it. :P

  • Labour will move further towards a remain position with regard to single-market access and the customs union.

Personally I think it is a bold and pragmatic move that is aimed at reconciling the divisions between those who want to leave and those who want to stay - not only in his own party but in the wider country. I will be interested to see the reactions from the EU commission ( who I expect will still be unhappy and, quite rightly, describe it as 'cherry-picking') but also from the remain Tories - looks like Osborne is a fan anyway: https://www.standard.co.uk/comment/comment/...l-a3775721.html

What people constantly seem to overlook is that the EU negotiators are acting on behalf of 27 nation states and their governments. Each of those governments has to be able to sell the deal to their parliament. In at least one case (Belgium) it also has to be ratified by regional parliaments. If the UK is seen to be getting a better deal than any one of those member states has, getting it through that particular parliament will be decidedly tricky. Both May and Corbyn are acting as if that is not the case. Naturally the Leave-supporting press (and the BBC) are keeping very quiet about that minor little detail.
It’s hard to know where to begin to unpack the Brexit delusion but that’s a good place to start.

That may have helped in last years's GE, but it wasn't *enough*.

Problem is, they keep getting struck out at election-time... :P

Stuck record much!

Typical diversionary tactics from Johnson. Say something so utterly stupid that people will talk about that rather than the real issues.

Enough to shock the Tories out of their 20 point lead complacency

It's incredibly important.

It is infuriating that the right wing press/ extreme right have pulled this coup

The fact is the youth s 80% against.

Do. The. Math.

52% or 37% with mostly older voters now = 100% of the power/ constitutional change??

In any sane and rational society it does not.

It's a numbers game, though - that's how democracy works.

Even if a group comprising 10% of voters was 100% committed to something, that doesn't mean they should prevail over the other 90% who may hold a different view - how would domination by 10% of young voters be any different from rule by 10% of Tory 'fat-cats'?

10%? 10? You really think the youth comprises that?

The youth PLUS the fact it is a razor thin 52/48 2.2 nation split means the whole shoddy thing should be cancelled. Let's talk again in 20 years x
