tbf the lyrics of "I Kissed A Girl" are pretty horrendous looking back. But then, that feels confined to history for its awful stereotypes. In the same way, Girls is very likely to be confined to history very quickly because of its careless lyrics as well.

I don’t like to digress but I find I Kissed a Girl has a different narrative than this which is I GET DRUNK AND KISS GIRLS. Katy has said she’d change the lyrics now, as they’re dated 10 years on. But Katy grew up in a religious cult where she was told homosexuality was a sin. She moved to LA and found out about lots of different ideas of sexuality and met all kinds of people. I see that song as her mind opening as she experiences new temptations and the clash with her upbringing.

But then there’s UR So gay, which is GENUINELY problematic.

but come on...strip it back , rita didn’t write this in anyway it’s the creation of a group of white heterosexual males!

Didn't Charli write the song?!

No writing contribution from Charli or Bebe, but Rita and Cardi have credits alongside 7 other writers (one being Ali Tamposi, while the other six writers are men).

The fact it took 9 people to come up with this song... :drama: :kink:

I did read that Ali Tamposi was the lead writer on this, I’m struggling to find the link though.
as the first WOMAN to come here and add my two cents, I really love this song. Yes, certain parts can be conceived as problematic but i truly get the free feel of it. And this is coming from the type of girl exactly who this song is about x

Hated I Kissed A Girl at the time. "It's not what good girls do" afterall

Yes, and ‘it felt so wrong’. Both are a bit ...eek. But I take it in the context that that’s what she’s been taught all her life in her crazy religion.

I genuinely love this song a lot and it is such a bop, I didn't really think much of the lyrics at first as I know its not that deep a song, it's really just about having fun and feeling free enough to be yourself, imo.

In saying that (and before y'all accuse me of being a sheep just bc of what my faves said, I'm not gonna boycot listening to it or go on a twitter rampage about how insensitive the song is) I do see their point v clearly but I also think its unfair to kinda invalidate that way of experiencing sexuality. I disagree with Hayley saying it's about only kissing other girls for the sake of straight men's gaze. So what if she or whoever only kisses girls when they're drinking? It doesn't mean every girl who likes girls can only express that when they're drunk, it's a lot to pile on one song.

However, there is a massive problem with how same sex relationships between women are portrayed in mainstream music. Like think about songs like I Kissed A Girl or Cool For The Summer, experimenting with girls is almost always shown as like a party trick, it's often in songs that are primarily about drinking, partying, being rebellious or whatever and sometimes it feels like an artist is only releasing music like that to be "edgy" and to get more people talking/sales and that's just not authentic.

Very rarely do wlw/mlm get real stories about same sex relationships the way straight people do, there aren't many gay love songs or breakup anthems out there which is why artists like Hayley Kiyoko and Muna or even Troye Sivan are important because they are authentic and are singing about feelings and experiences that are relatable to LGBTQ people. I think all Girls does is highlight how far away we still are to having more authentic gay music and artists in our mainstream, it doesn't mean its a bad song though or is "wrong". Kiss whoever you like, there doesn't need to be anything attached like?? No offense to Rita but she's not exactly the type of artist to carry a social issue forward and try to bat down problematic things the way Hayley or Muna might with their music, which is fine, not every song about same sex love has to be revolutionary to LGBTQ people, its just she's not helping matters which is unfortunate...

It is a fine line though as I do also realise, as a bi girl myself, it does play into some stigmas surrounding my own sexuality. I've once told someone I was bi before and got "oh I'm bi too, I have kissed a few girls when I've been really drunk before" as a reply and that I disagree with as it's not really the same if you're only doing it because you're drunk/for a laugh (which is how I think Hayley Kiyoko has interpreted this song) and not because you're attracted to another girl. Idk its kinda messy, I'm glad people have pointed out the negative trend with these kind of songs but I don't think Rita and everyone else's sexuality should be questioned as a way of determining how "valid" the song is, it's not fair to judge someone elses experience from a few lyrics in a song. Its just an example of ignorance really, Rita should probably have known better than to get a bunch of dudes to help write something like this with her though :')

I think this debate is ridiculous. I don’t recall any issues with Katy’s track or Demi’s so I don’t really see why the PC police are jumping on this track. It’s a catchy, harmless pop song about experimentation. Simple as.

Time's have changed

If Nicki was on this you’d be all over it

Maybe she could have saved it!

I hate when people have a go at the ‘PC police’, as if calling out things that might be harmful is a bad thing? Nobody is saying that we can’t enjoy the song...I’m still bopping, but we’re just discussing which lyrics have raised eyebrows... So unless you’re a queer woman you don’t really get to decide if it’s offensive or not?

Completely agree with this. Can't stand it when someone uses the defence of 'things being too PC' or people being 'easily offended'. I can enjoy it as a song, but like you say, the lyrics are just a bit questionable and I expected better.

I do understand where some points are coming from, and I think it’s mostly strengthened by the fact its written by all males, but I don’t necessarily agree with them. For me, it’s just another contradiction where people are saying that people’s sexuality can be fluid yet also still trying to stick labels on people (aka saying Rita is not actually bi). I think the points would hold more validity if she was going on about how wrong it was etc

TaTu- All The Things She Said too... Although it is a bop.

Its not about it being offesive, it's about what message it could portray. You're 100% welcome to say its just a catchy pop song about experimentation but just because that's how you see it, it doesn't mean that's totally accurate and anyone who sees it as something negative is wrong. It is iffy lyrically, you can't deny that really but like everyone commenting in here aren't queer women like Joe said so you really can't sit there and basically say that queer women who aren't comfortable with its message are ridiculous. It's not an issue that most of you are exposed to, that sort of representation isn't going to be something you identify with. Its just tiring to hear the same surface level themes surrounding female sexuality is all.

I really think this could severely underperform and I, for one, am glad.

The message is beyond BLEH. I'd maybe consider be more forgiving if it was actually a decent bop but its not even that. After Anywhere, she's really ruined all momentum she had going for her. Shame really.
