BBC Radio 1 to bring in brand new presenters for Christmas 2020

 

BBC Radio 1 will be bringing in a host of brand new presenters between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve this year, showcasing the best in new and emerging talent by offering a once in a lifetime opportunity to broadcast on the UK’s biggest youth radio station.

Radio 1 introduced the guest presenter slots for the first time in 2019, giving 35 new DJs and presenters a chance to host a show on Radio 1 over the festive period. Among those selected from over 1,100 entries were YouTuber and activist Lucy Edwards, who became the first blind presenter to host a show on the station, and presenter and podcaster Jacob Edward, who became Radio 1’s first non-binary presenter.

 

Applications for this year open today (Thursday 3 September) via the Radio 1 website and close at midnight on Sunday 20 September. Radio 1 want to hear from DJs and presenters with previous radio experience, be it in community, hospital, student or local radio.

 

Radio 1 has long been dedicated to supporting the best emerging talent from across the UK, with initiatives like Radio 1’s Residency and Radio 1’s Brit List dedicated to bringing emerging presenters, DJs and artists into the spotlight. Applicants have the chance to follow in the footsteps of the station’s current roster of DJs including Greg James, who started out presenting on student radio before joining Radio 1, and Clara Amfo, who started her career as an intern in radio. Nick Grimshaw also presented for his university radio station before going on to work as an intern for a broadcaster, and Annie Mac worked her way up to presenter and DJ from assistant radio producer.

 

Aled Haydn Jones, Head of Radio 1, says: “We’re really proud to be offering this opportunity again for upcoming broadcasters to take their first steps onto the national stage. We welcomed some incredible new talent onto the station last year and I’m looking forward to hearing from the next generation of DJs and presenters again this year.”

Annie Nightingale has confirmed on her show this week that throughout the autumn she is going to be celebrating 50 years of being with Radio 1 by featuring exclusive interviews with some of her favourite artists (Tue night/Wed morn 12am-2am). She's only confirmed Billie Eilish so far and played snippets of the interview this week. Glad they're giving her an opportunity to celebrate in her own way (she's got a book out today too).

Mistajam is leaving radio 1 and 1xtra.

 

Reece Parkinson is to take over 1xtra slot and Charlie Hedges to take over Radio 1 dance anthems show.

Capital is launching Capital Dance on DAB across the UK and has poached MistaJam from BBC Radio 1 to launch it – today – RadioToday can reveal.

 

MistaJam, who resigned suddenly from the BBC last week, will host Tuesday to Saturday Drive on Capital Dance and the Capital Weekender, Friday and Saturday from 7pm on both Capital and Capital Dance.

 

The new station launches today at 4pm on the Digital One multiplex.

 

Capital’s Coco Cole joins Capital Dance as the host of evenings, Monday – Thursday from 7pm. Coco will also host Friday & Saturday nights on the all-new Capital Weekender show with Ministry of Sound from 10pm.

 

Rio Fredrika is the only other presenter announced for the station so far, and will host Monday Drive.

 

Capital Dance’s playlist will include tracks from the likes of Disclosure, MK, Jessie Ware, Love Regenerator, Calvin Harris, Martin Solveig, Peggy Gou, Paul Woolford, The Blessed Madonna, Disciples, Duke Dumont, Jax Jones, Aluna and Armand Van Helden.

 

It joins Capital UK, Capital XTRA and Capital XTRA Reloaded on the national digital radio multiplex.

Smart move getting in there before Radio 1 launches their station. I wonder if Radio 1 just couldn't offer anything to keep him on the new service, I think he would've suited the Drivetime show they're launching instead of Pete Tong.

 

I've been wanting a Capital Dance station for a while and I was genuinely expecting output similar to their Weekender shows so it's been fantastic to hear the likes of Jessie Ware and Chase & Status this afternoon along with some of the newer tracks that Capital don't play (e.g. Noizu, Eats Everything and KC Lights).

What a surprise this was! Takes a lot to get me to listen to commercial radio but really enjoyed tuning in this teatime. Lots of deep cuts too, not just the overplayed dance anthems we've all heard countless times. Will take a while to get used to him saying 'Capital Dance' and not 'Radio 1' but I think I will be listening a lot. Knew he'd be back on air somewhere before long but didn't expect it to be within five days!
