Yeah I’m not sure I can see the Chart happening tonight - it might just get out up on the website at 5:45!

When was the last time Charts didn't go on air?

When was the last time Charts didn't go on air?

I don't have the answer but it probably wasn't that long ago, I think they have skipped the chart show in favour of airing certain music events or on holiday weekends where they have special programming.

Can anyone remember if that happened in 2002 when the Quuen mother died?

They aired the chart but cut out about five rap songs. The only time I remember it going completely was for Princess Diana.

Yes, the only time it was removed completely was on the Sunday after Diana died as her coffin arrived back in the UK during the broadcast and they did a news broadcast - as now - for the day. ChartsPlus have received the charts, so it is likely to be just on the website this week.

So far they are all instrumental remakes of pop hits including ‘Video Games’ and ‘Hold On We’re Going Home’
These instrumentals on the radio feel so surreal but are massively helping me to concentrate with work :kink: Coldplay - 'Magic' at the moment.
Someone tweeted that the reason Radio 1 are playing wordless versions of tracks is because they would not have had time to review the lyrics to see if they were inappropriate.

I'm honestly enjoying the instrumentals a lot! Some great throwbacks and even a couple discoveries for me (I'd never heard Mabel - My Boy My Town before :o)

Edit: Oops I was ~90 minutes behind on BBC Sounds, didn't realize it had switched to non-instrumentals...but I'm enjoying those too!

Danny Howard is on now with some chilled out dance music by the sound of it - nice energy change compared to earlier!
They've had to make a snap decision and as a primarily music station they can't play the news all night so they're just being as respectful as they can by playing inoffensive music and little chat
They did the same thing when Diana died. I remember waking up that morning, putting on Redo 1 and being rather surprised to hear the theme from Midnight Express. I only found out why when it ended.
Does anyone know the name of the song that got played after Tchami?

And now we are back to chilled tracks and instrumentals for the rest of the night it seems. That Radio 1 Dance output was really good, despite the circumstances I wish it was like that rather than just repeats of previously aired shows

The circumstances aren't great but I've found it interesting hearing how the station has changed its output, particularly switching from news to instrumentals to vocals to dance to instrumentals again

Most of them have been easily recognisable with a few exceptions like that one, but I think the most random instrumental they've played so far was Best Mistake by Ariana Grande feat. Big Sean (from the My Everything era) just over half an hour ago, I don't recall R1 playing that at the time so for that instrumental to be featured today was a surprise!
