art's in pop culture in me

| 28 // Applause // ARTPOP // 7.52

Time to lose another single, and this time it's the lead single from ARTPOP :cheer: Applause was released amid a POP EMERGENCY, aka the messiest release for a single ever ;o Inspired by the cheering of her fans, which kept her motivated during the months she toured with the Born This Way Ball in pain, it's still a relevant song to her. A top 10 hit in most places across the world, it was a decent enough comeback and musically it harked back to earlier-Fame days. A music video, directed by fashion forward Inez and Vinoodh, accompanied the song and featured many interesting looks including Swanga and a Warhol centerpiece. The song remains fun, vibrant and full of life, but I personally rarely return to it and it's one of her most forgettable songs so i'm happy it's out. I find it hard to passionately love the song, it's just there, and I think she has so much more to say and do and is capable of much more prolific lead singles.

Thought this would have lasted a bit longer, but oh well, apparently Gaga didn't even want this as the lead single, she wanted 'Aura', but the label said NO and wanted something more commercial, and yeah this was a decent sized hit, but got well and truly overshadowed by Katy Perry's 'Roar' which basically sucked up all the hype.

Always thought Applause was an absolutely TERRIBLE choice for lead single given her public image at the time and how she'd hyped up Artpop. Never particularly liked it myself either. But really, coming back with THAT self-absorbed, not particularly relatable anthem over a surefire pop hit like Gypsy or DWUW was a really shocking misfire.

THIS!!

Gypsy and DWUW are the only two hits from the album. She could have closed with Applause and then Aura and left it at that.

I was so full of shit, now shit is so full of me!

POP EMERGENCY still makes me laugh

I liked it a fair bit when it was new, but in the last few years it's not one of her singles I go back to very often.

| 26 // John Wayne // Joanne // 7.55

| 27 // Artpop // ARTPOP // 7.53

Title song from ARTPOP drops out directly after its lead single. Artpop isn't quite the banging song you suspect from the album that surrounds it, instead it's a softer centrepiece to the album that asks more questions than it solves and reveals. Gaga didn't tamper with the song's production too much as she felt in it's form it had a sort of timelessness. The first song developed for the album, it helped to shape a move into new avenues of musical production that would later fill the album as a whole. Its lyrical content is ambigious, but some responses to it include: a love relationship, Gaga's bonding with her fans, the merging of art and pop, as well as using them to portray her brand value and generate further interest in her. Whatever it means, the song itself is an ambient listen that remains the only song on the album that doesn't "go anywhere or explode or orgasm" (in her words).

John Wayne is much more explicit in its meaning, and it's a subject matter that Gaga has sung about multiple times throughout her career - falling in love with the wrong, bad boy man. Produced by Mark Ronson and BloodPop, the song is about a wild sort of love, living dangerously and potentially depicts a response to Taylor Kinney and the relationship she had with him. Jonas Åkerlund directed the music video and for many, it was a return to form visually for Gaga, as it was as manic and high-octane as her earlier works.

ARTPOP is very much a fave from the album. The production is lushhh

‘John Wayne’ I f***ing jammed at the time but I rarely go back to.

Artpop the title track is among my all time faves from her!!

John Wayne a bit too high tbh

I have never loved Gypsy, even though she sings about Finland there, I have always thought it was second rate The Edge of Glory just like Mary Jane Holland is second rate Bloody Mary.

Bloody Mary is a second rate Steps cheese!!

I like Gypsy, but my absolute FAOURITE from that album, and one of her songs I listen to THE most, if not the actual most, is ARTPOP

Free. My. Mind. ARTPOP! You. Make. My. Heart. Stop!

| 25 // Judas // Born This Way // 7.58

Time for another single to drop out, and this time it's the second single from 'Born This Way', Judas. Before release, the song was described as "a highly evolved, Titanium-plated 'Bad Romance' from the year 2511 travelling half a millennium back in time to save music from a tidal wave of 'in the club'-obsessed pop drivel". When it dropped, the comparisons to Bad Romance were apparent - the crazed Monster chants were back but this time with a biblical twist. It's yet another song about falling for the wrong guy, and released around Easter time, here it's Jesus's betrayer Judas who is the love interest.

The music video (co-directed by Gaga herself) is one of her best. It features stunning cinematography, glorious settings, extravagent costumes, frantic choreography and one of the most compelling storylines she's ever had. Absolutely brimming with religious connotations, it was adorned by critics and fans and went on to be nominated for two awards at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. The song performed decently on the worldwide charts, largely due to riding off the hype that still continued from the BTW campaign and she performed it live multiple times. It remains a fun song, and continues to divide fans over whether it is the second coming of Bad Romance or just a song that should've remained album track or at least, later single in the album's life. Either way, it's explosive, so ear condoms at the ready and enjoy~
