Another one in Florida too. <_<

A participant in a video game tournament in Jacksonville, Florida, has shot dead two people before killing himself, police say.

They named the killer as David Katz, 24, from Baltimore and say he used one hand gun. No other suspects are sought.

Eleven other people were injured on Sunday at Jacksonville Landing, a large shopping and entertainment complex.

Some unconfirmed reports say Katz had become angry after losing at the American football eSports event.

The victims are not being officially named until their next-of-kin are informed, although tributes to two gamers have started appearing on social media.

Florida has seen several mass shootings in recent years, including at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando in 2016, when 49 people died, and the Marjory Stoneman Douglas School in Parkland in February this year, when 17 people were killed.

The fact that this has received relatively little coverage here just sums up how routine these events have become. It seems the attitude is "Only three dead; not much of a story then".
I'm not sure it's quite that, it's more that it is yet another one and there's little new we can add to what is said every time. Which I suppose is sort of an apathy in itself.

The one new angle on this is the community it affects. People taking part in these tournaments are minor public figures a lot of the time, streamers and that, probably with very little security. That sadly increases the likelihood that would be killers are going after the notoriety.

And to have gone, premeditated and come back to kill people just because of losing a game, that is awful. As abhorrent as the other motives but the nature of gaming makes it seem so much more petty and sad.

I didn't check any other stations here, but CNN didn't even cover the story last night :drama: They were too busy airing a tribute to John McCain that had already been playing on a loop the entire day.

I wonder if it's more to do with the bias against the gamergate community and all the damage that did in the States getting Rump and Far Right support going, together with a lack of surprise that a disturbed member of that community is inevitably unable to distinguish between reality and fantasy when it comes to playing shoot-em-up games...

So the traditional media may not be that sympathetic in this instance, and the far-right media wouldnt want to discuss the issue at all because of the gun-control debate.

True, but it was a sports game. Not a shooter. The link between FPS games and real world violence is shoddy anyway, but I think if it had been an FPS there would be a ton of media weighing in against video games as a whole despite that really not being the issue.

Besides, which is more likely to kill someone, a fake simulated gun or a real one, and which should society restrict access to?

seems the real issue is gun control, as usual. He had a history of mental illness and obsessive irrational behaviour, all on court records, and yet was still able to legally buy a handgun.

Welcome to America, where even the mentally ill can legally access weapons of death without a problem.

Yes. All shootings are bad. You don’t have the right to be judge jury and executioner. It’s a pretty fundamental cornerstone of a functioning justice system

So she should have just watched as the paedophile raped her daughter?! :o

The right to defend yourself and others from an immediate threat is *also* part of functioning justice system.

You might consider all lives to have equal value, but I certainly don't when one of them is a rapist!

Not killing someone doesn’t mean you don’t do anything ffs. You intervene but not with lethal force.

You don’t have the right to decide if someone is guilty and sentence them to death in an instant. I do not accept that just because someone has broken into your house you have the right to murder them. It’s f***ing barbaric.

That's BS - if your daughter was being raped, NO WAY would you let iit happen!

What is more likely to traumatise a 12-year-old girl? Seeing someone's brains blown out or seeing the same man injured by being clobbered by something?
Exactly! And trials can bring closure to victims whereas taking a persons life, even a “bad person” can have major traumatic effects for decades to come

I would say it'd be more traumatic for them to see their parents stand back and let it happen.

Erm, at what point did anyone say that was only alternative? Stop reading what you want to read.
