Omg, you consider Avril Lavigne and Paloma Faith OLD?

By old I think he means artists who peaked during the era when downloads were central to buying habits!

Oh well I hope so

Lady Gaga very stable, thought she would’ve fell hard by now!

Worth remembering, however, that The Cure was number one for the first three days on iTunes, and Shallow never got to the top and has already dropped to #5. Still, it looks like she's on course for a safe top 40 with this.

Surely once ASIB is out in cinemas Shallow could be looking at official top 5 or 10? Such a great soundtrack and the movie is getting stellar reviews.
old acts benefit more from there current low iTunes sales situation, Kylie/avril/paloma fans still buy tracks on itunes unlike drake fans or k west fans

Avril maybe old by your standards but she doesn't look likes she aged a day in 15 years

Surely the poster means artists who have been around for some time. Avrill was at her peak when cds ruled well before downloads.

ASIB will hardly be a big hit movie like The Greatest Showman which draws the casual viewer? This song won't get much radio play or Spotify play as it's Lady Gaga and the song isn't exactly commercial sounding.

The movie will be a massive success. I don't think that's in any doubt at all. The tracking for opening weekend increases with every update, but is topping out at $55 million at the moment. It's critically acclaimed and is currently an Oscar favourite in almost every category. It will undoubtedly boost the soundtrack's success and the success of whatever song catches the audience the most. Though there's every chance it will be one of the others, rather than Shallow.

All it takes is a couple of high profile performances and boom. An Oscar performance is all but guaranteed, but if they do any other promo and actually sing together, it'll be golden.

For context, Greatest Showman opened with under $9 million in its first weekend. So it's an apples and oranges comparison.

Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper's decline already allowed Dynoro & Gigi D'Agostino to hit a new peak with In My Mind at #4, and now this...

 5. Marshmello & Bastille - Happier [*NEW PEAK*]

 7. Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper - Shallow

The movie has more commercial songs in it, but Shallow and another big ballad I'll Never Love Again are the two big moments in the film song wise that stand out, and if they get two song nominations at the Oscars it'll be those two. I'd say neither exactly scream hit (then again nor did This Is Me) but with these films it's about the moment in the film and them hitting the audiences, like This Is Me, Rewrite The Stars and Never Enough in TGS. It's those two that will do that (not saying it'll be to the same extent as TGS, as ofc that's more accessible and ranges across adults and kids), there are pop songs or more radio tailored balllads in the film and they will be on the soundtrack but some of them are just clips and don't shine in the film so won't be the hits. I would say INLA could be the hit but you never know what people will take to.

The film will be huge there's no doubt, the songs don't necessarily need to be tbh. I doubt they really care if they are  Shallow would not be as hard hitting within the film if it wasn't live and had that raw feel to it, if they were running for a hit with it they'd have done a pop version for the single.

They're definitely not aiming for hit singles. The plan up until last week was not to release any individual singles at all. So, I think it's purely to capitalise on the hype that's building for the movie and to get people interested in the soundtrack album.

Actually, her biggest era/her peak was at the turn of downloads overtaking. Iirc 'Girlfriend' charted on downloads alone for a week or something.

I may be making this up but I swear it did

Girlfriend aside, I'd say her debut was her biggest era. TBDT didn't sell anywhere near her previous two albums and is seen as the moment Avril "sold out". I still love When You're Gone though.

I enjoy TBDT (some of it is cringy af though, that got the pants song :’)) but yeah it’s sales were mediocre after two million selling albums! Her going from that to Goodbye Lullaby lowkey reminds me of Prism and Witness.

Erm The greatest showman wasn't expected to be huge but look at the juggernaut it became if the public take to it and a song is catchy enough why are you certain ASIB won't be big

Isn't Let Go her only million-selling album? Her certifications:

Let Go: 6x Plat (1.8m+)

Under My Skin: 2x Plat (600k+)

The Best Damn Thing: Plat (300k+)

Goodbye Lullaby: Gold (100k+)

Avril Lavigne: uncertified (<60k)

Gaga/Bradley is doing really well so far as the movie is still yet to be released. Probably will peak in a few weeks but to debut top 40 would be really good. This Is Me took 7 weeks to peak as well.

The soundtrack will probably sell well initially too based off Gagas core fanbase which is still one of the biggest in terms of hardcore supporters.

I just assumed Shallow would get that popularity since it was in the trailer and is seen as the “theme song” for the movie

so kinda like This Is Me

I haven't seen the movie yet (roll on Friday) but from what I've heard and read, there are better songs. I've heard I'll Never Love Again and it's absolutely stunning, but isn't commercial enough to be a hit.

Shallow was always going to be anticipated the most because it was such a big moment in that very first trailer. But I don't expect them to be having massive hits, like This Is Me. I think people will go for the whole album as opposed to individual tracks, as it's being presented almost like an audio journey through the film, with little dialogue tracks in there too.
