Wonder if this new iTunes no1 can follow suit and become the official no1 after Ariana?
Actually here for Ava Max smashing. I don't want to support something Jonjo likes so much but it is v good. xx

Back to #2

Literally one or two copies between them.. FFS.

1. Ava Max - Sweet but Psycho

Honestly unbelievable!! When I discovered this little song about 4 months ago (via Buzzjack) I thought it’d be yet another criminally underrated pop song that I obsessed over and only a select few of my friends would know

Never in a million years would I have thought it’d be #1 on iTunes

70% of the top 10 are solo female songs and the other 3 (shallow, baby and polaroid) all with females. Last time that would have happened?!
I wish Buzzjack would just get over the "OMG look how many females there are in the top 10" obsession already
it isn't an obsession, they're just pointing out a fact that rarely happens

06. Zara Larsson - Ruin My Life

Climb to #5 and fight for that top 10 peak this week :cheer:

I wish Buzzjack would just get over the "OMG look how many females there are in the top 10" obsession already

I know since the 90s there's been a mix of genders in the top 10 most weeks!

When the business is so male dominated it's a fair thing to point out :)

For example here's how many weeks females have spent at the top of the UK chart in the past 3 years:

2016 - 21/52 (36/52 if you count Nyla on "One Dance" which is literally just a sample)

2017 - 12/52 (18/52 if you count Beyoncé on "Perfect")

2018 - 17/48 (so far)

so lets not pretend it's not impressive that there's female vocals on EVERY song in the Top 10

Additionally - regarding number ones in the UK:

Males on lead credit:

2016 - 42/52 (80.7%)

2017 - 39/52 (75.0%)

2018 - 32/48 (66.7%)

Females on lead credit:

2016 - 3/52 (5.7%)

2017 - 9/52 (17.3%)

2018 - 4/48 (8.3%)

Split/Duos/Mixed Bands on lead credit:

2016 - 7/52 (13.5%)

2017 - 4/52 (7.7%)

2018 - 12/48 (25.0%)

Well lets see, for this year.

Female led singles: 17 singles for a total of 103 weeks in the Top 10.

Male led singles: 54 singles for a total of 294 weeks in the Top 10.

Split credit singles: 16 singles for a total of 96 weeks in the Top 10.

and if we take out any songs where both genders get credit:

Females only: 16 singles for a total of 88 weeks in the Top 10.

Males only: 49 singles for a total of 258 weeks in the Top 10.

so, yeah .. equal opportunities in the music business are a myth

The figures show one story I guess especially with the urban dominance over the past 2 years which favours male artists heavily. I guess there's other factors involved too such as purchasers of chart hits being overwhelmingly female and therefore will tend to be partisan in their purchases or buy male artists more.

That doesn't make it any less impressive that the Top 10 currently features female vocals on every song and it's very fair that people point out how great that is :)
