January 19, 20196 yr *ignore this post which is basically me admitting defeat and succombing to this song* Duck you Mabel
January 20, 20196 yr well this is fabulous isn’t it; steve mac can produce a great pop song and there are hooks and melodies everywhere the video is a straight to dvd rip off of ‘new rules’ tho
January 20, 20196 yr It sounds very late 00s to me, when this kind of R&B was popular! Very good song, and this looks like it will be big.
January 20, 20196 yr This is incredible so so into it right now It would be a huge injustice for this not to do well
January 20, 20196 yr This becomes more and more song of the year potential with each listen A triumph *.*
January 21, 20196 yr Fantastic that it’s at 12 in the midweeks. I’ve enjoyed all of Mabels singles so far.
January 21, 20196 yr I do really like this but no as much as everyone else on here seems to! Fine Line is by far her best single for me, although I'd say this has time to grow on me. I haven't seen the video yet but I imagine that's a big selling point for a lot of you with the New Rules comparisons because I don't hear it in the song at all

I haven't seen the video yet but I imagine that's a big selling point for a lot of you with the New Rules comparisons because I don't hear it in the song at all It's more lyrical theme that's similar to 'New Rules' rather than sonically. Doesn't seem gimmicky in any way though. The video definitely has some strong 'New Rules' comparisons though. 'Fine Line' was my favourite from Mabel too but I think this will top this, even when the benefit of recency wears off. I can see this being her biggest hit to date based on its performance so far. Funnily enough it feels like she's following a similar chart progress to Dua Lipa. 'Finders Keepers' and 'Fine Line' were her 'Hotter Than Hell'/'Blow Your Mind', 'One Shot' was her 'Lost In Your Light' and then 'Don't Call Me Up' could be her 'New Rules' moment, although probably to a lesser extent.
January 21, 20196 yr Who remembers TOTP Saturday and when they used to do the "£20 Pop Vid"? Where acts would try and reshoot their music videos on a budget of £20? Well, that's the vibe I got from the video in comparison to New Rules lmao. (Obviously on a much higher budget than £20, but the comparisons are def legit imo)
January 22, 20196 yr Glad to see this looks comfortable for a top 40 debut, perhaps even a top 20 debut! I hope it'll climb a lot and become a big hit for her. Loving it. The video almost has 1 million views now and it's only been a few days!
January 22, 20196 yr I find it so odd that Capital haven’t playlisted it yet! Edited January 22, 20196 yr by Mr. C. Joel
January 22, 20196 yr It was 12 yesterday and is rising on all metrics how on earth would it not be safe for top 20? It's #11 in the mids today btw
January 22, 20196 yr It's strange that all the new hit females have had a very similar career so far, 2 fairly big hits, a huge flop, then their biggest hit to date! Anne-Marie (Alarm & Ciao Adiós - Heavy - 2002) Dua Lipa (Hotter Than Hell & Be The One - Lost In Your Light - New Rules) Zara Larsson (Lush Life & Ain't My Fault - So Good - Symphony)
January 22, 20196 yr It's strange that all the new hit females have had a very similar career so far, 2 fairly big hits, a huge flop, then their biggest hit to date! Anne-Marie (Alarm & Ciao Adiós - Heavy - 2002) Dua Lipa (Hotter Than Hell & Be The One - Lost In Your Light - New Rules) Zara Larsson (Lush Life & Ain't My Fault - So Good - Symphony) In all these cases it felt like people's reactions at the time to the songs that flopped indicated they would flop and the reactions to the songs that became the biggest hit indicated they would be huge. Makes you wonder why the record companies were sitting on songs that had the potential to be huge and released songs that, from the off, received a mediocre reception. Obviously it helps added longevity to the album campaigns to have later singles be huge hits, but those flops had the potential to derail everything.
January 22, 20196 yr I wouldn’t say Lush Life was a fairly big hit tbf, it had a huge chart run and has over 1.1m sales!
