5. Soft Cell - Tainted Love

Average score - 8.167

Writer - Ed Cobb

Top scores : 10 - ready for it,Bjork,Dircadirca,dandy*,Spiceboy,Nimbus,Popchartfreak,brokenrecords,Jade

Low score : 2 - Jason

Soft Cell make the top 5 with their cover of the Gloria Jones song from 1965 which was only a B side but became popular in the Northern Soul clubs in the 1970s. This is the highest placed song in the final by a British act and also the highest placed song with a male lead vocal. Only one voter gave it a score of less than 6.

4. Britney Spears - ...Baby One More Time

Average score - 8.192

Writer - Max Martin

Top scores : 11 - Jack,Mark223, 10 - Liam,Bjork,Alex!,Nick F1,N-S,zeus555,Nimbus,brokenrecords,ThePensmith,dj tim e,xajnipi

Low scores : 3.5 - King Rollo, 4 - AH Gold, 4.5 - Scene

It's not going to be Britney as she has to settle for fourth place. The song might have gone to either TLC or 5ive but ended up as her debut single. It spent two weeks at no.1 and was the best selling single of 1999.

Blondie beating Britney is a surprise, it's good but never knew Heart of Glass was so popular on here!

Is it gonna be Madonna against Madonna for number one?

Actually I remember there was a thread quite a few years ago now in The Lounge based on "the least hated song ever" & if memory serves me correctly Heart Of Glass might have been the only suggestion that no-one actually hated to any degree so it makes sense it's still in the running!

3. Blondie - Heart Of Glass

Average score - 8.205

Writers - Debbie Harry,Chris Stein

Top scores : 11 - Scene, 10 - marcinjaro,AH Gold,Dircadirca,Chapman,Chez Wombat,dandy*,zeus555,Spiceboy,Nimbus,Popchartfreak,brokenrecords,ThePensmith,Jade

Low scores : 1.5 - Jason, 2 - Mark223

This is a surprise for me as well. I said earlier on that 1979 was the best year for no.1 singles so I'm pleased to see something from that year in the top 3. Like 'Tainted Love',consistent good scores have given it a high position with only two voters giving it a score of less than 6. The song was Blondie's first no.1,spending four weeks at the top of the chart.

So it is Madonna against Madonna!

I prefer Frozen out of the two so I'm hoping that wins, but I reckon Like A Prayer is probably more popular here, forgetting the Eurovision performance that went with it! :D

2. Madonna - Frozen

Writers - Madonna,Patrick Leonard

Top scores : 11 - brokenrecords, 10 - marcinjaro,AH Gold,Liam,Bjork,Alex!,Nick F1,M4NG0,King Rollo,ThePensmith,xajnipi,Jade,Bre

Low scores : 1 - Jason, 1.5 - jimwatts

And so Madonna triumphs with both of the top 2 songs. Firstly 'Frozen' from 1998 which was her eighth no.1 and her first since 1990. It was her first single to debut at no.1.

.........................................................................

1. Madonna - Like A Prayer

Average score - 8.731

Writers - Madonna,Patrick Leonard

Top scores : 11 - marcinjaro,vibe,N-S, 10 - AH Gold,Liam,Bjork,Jack,Alex!,Jester,M4NG0,Chapman,King Rollo,dandy*,zeus555,Spiceboy,oof,Popcharfreak, brokenrecords,ThePensmith,xajnipi,Bre

Low scores : 1.5 - Jason, 2 - coi, 3 - PeteFromLeeds

And 'Like A Prayer' from 1989 wins by a large margin. Its total score was 340.5 compared to 322.5 for 'Frozen'. That gap of 18 is the same as the gap from 2nd place to 24th place. 54% of voters gave it a score of either 10 or 11. I'm not a big Madonna fan but I gave both these songs a score of 10 which sums up why they have topped this poll. They are both great songs that appeal to more than just the committed Madonna fans on Buzzjack. I didn't really want the same singer to have both of the top two songs but 'Like A Prayer' is a worthy winner and can now be proclaimed as Buzzjack's Ultimate UK Number 1 Single.

The voting method in the final has brought some interesting results, we're essentially voting by committee so, as others have pointed out, songs which polarise opinion have not fared as well as the ones few dislike.

(Incidentally, if I hadn't voted at all in the final, Bohemian Rhapsody would've finished 13th, and 3rd-6th would have been level on points: BOMT, HOG, Hung Up, TL - so Madonna would have come within a whisker of the whole top 3)

EDIT: yayyyyy at Like A Prayer winning by some distance! :cheer:

Thanks Rollo for all your work on this!

And so we finally reach the end of this massive search for the ultimate UK number one!

It's been a very fun and interesting process, and thanks very much for hosting it!

'Frozen' and 'Like A Prayer' are my 2 favourite songs by Madonna, I'm not a huge fan of her in general but those sons are undeniable, especially the former which I'd have loved to win (it was maybe my 2nd favourite song on the list) but 2nd is still great for it. And hey, it wasn't even close. 'Heart Of Glass' coming 3rd is a great result too.

Thanks to all who voted and left comments over the five months it took to finish this. Tomorrow I'll reveal which songs scored the most points in the first round and the four semi-finals.
thanks for doing this, interesting to see Madonna do so well, it's easy to forget how popular she is on buzzjack.

wow wasn't expecting Madonna to get the top 10 but those are both great tracks, although I do prefer Into the Groove

even more surprised at Blondie being #3, I do like them but not love them
