Hello all and welcome to Spice Rate 2019!!

 

Over the course of this summer , we will be conducting the Spice Girls 2019 rate. People who were on DenDen know this from the past.

 

This year we decided to do it in a different format cause all together our girls have released a lot of songs to do it in one bunch , There will be a 90s edition, a 00s editions and a 2010s edition. So 3 times more fun. The 3 editions + results will keep us entertained for the summer.

We are starting with the 90s edition!

The rules are just like any other rate One 11, one -1. should be easy.

We will do the same with the other eras and then putting all results together to which is Buzzjacks favorite Spice/solo spice song!

'Viva Forever' is my 3rd favourite song of all time so no competition here <3 seeing it performed live at Wembley was an ultimate life highlight :wub: 'Goodbye' is a real outlier here, I've always appreciated the sentiment but as a song I just find it quite dull oops. Otherwise, very strong!

'I Want You Back' is my favourite song she released so I'm glad it's the #1 in her discography. The 'Word Up' cover is so bad, Timbaland production aside :')

I only learned that this was a cover a few years ago :o a really cool direction initially for Emma but she definitely bettered it over the years.

Melanie was on fire right now and we haven't even reached her best solo songs yet. 'When You're Gone' is such a strong duet :wub: I find 'Goin' Down' underrated amongst the fans (it surprises me how high it peaked in the UK though for what it is! Spice hype I guess) - almost gave it a 9 actually. A weird initial direction to look back on in terms of commercial appeal! I sometimes forget that 'Never Be The Same Again' wasn't actually her debut. That feels like the true moment when her solo career slotted into place.

'Mi Chico Latino' is my favourite Geri song for sure :wub: 'Look At Me' was a very fun debut from her - if only it peaked at #1 like many of her others. I've never been able to warm to 'Lift Me Up', her vocals in the final chorus feel quite strained in particular.

Not many groups could say that they released mostly excellent singles that have stood the test of time. Mama is the sour point in their 90s group discography, in my opinion!

Mel B wins, hands down, the best debut and follow up solo singles! Two excellent tracks with excellent videos! Deserved better in the charts though. Shame about Hot, it was a mess of an album for what promised to be a really interesting pop artist.

I got bored of WYG quite quickly tbh, but Northern Star continues to be excellent. Going Down is not terrible just a bit too random and a bit lame attempt at 'rock' lol

Never really got the whole Geri music thing. People keep saying that her first album is the 3rd Spice Girls album that never was, but I always thought it was a bit shit to be honest. All the ballads are just tacky and the uptempos are not that much better, in my opinion. Bag It Up is basically a cheap version of Who Do You Think You Are, Look At Me is cheap narcisistic drama, and her voice is terrible throughout.... Lift Me Up had to be the worst single ever released by one of them....
