I knew my semi-final was a good draw for me but hahaha at me worrying that I might still miss out and then it turns out I came 3rd in the semi :D although these semi 2 results are absolutely wild in general to the point of being pretty much meaningless, it almost looks like it could essentially have been an 18 way tie for first, the only way to explain the absolute ridiculousness of FSR Rontvia going from winning the semi to being bottom 3 in the final...! That has to be a damn near unbeatable record right there. I actually had FSR Rontvia at 3 points after my first listen of the semi as well although they ended up missing out as the song kind of peaked for me on first listen, I do still like it though and it did deserve better than it got for sure.

 

I've been doing a bit of number crunching as this result is so bizarre. Going from winning the semi to bottom three in the final is pretty much unprecedented. I was actually pretty confident of qualifying comfortably from semi 2, considering how many countries that are often favourable to this sort of sound that I luckily ended up with, and really didn't get the blanket DNQ predictions at all, but it's fair to say I didn't expect to win the semi or be anywhere near the top five of it.

 

So obviously I lucked out with the semi draw massively - my only voters from semi 1 in the final were Bellamia (3), Vulkyria (4), Dobago (6), Jupiterdonia (1), Lotunia (8), Brechtoria (5), Buzzjack Mountain (3) and Wholune (7) and then AQs Quintessa and Greenfroze both gave me 2 in semi 2 that I guess might have been the same or a similar case if I'd been in semi 1. So good low level support but probably wouldn't have been enough to qualify from that semi overall.

 

So apart from not appealing much to semi 1 voters, I had a few other outliers that caused me to fall to the bottom three of the final - I got the full 12 from Kylienips and 8 from Hushkanukia in the semi, and neither voted for me in the final (so Salsa Me must have been a first listen peak song for them too!) and then Yehesi had given me 10 in the semi and didn't end up voting in the final. I was helped by République d'Áskorza, however, who gave me 1 in the semi and then 11 in the final.

 

Add to the fact that semi 2 was the closest semi probably ever seen and that pretty much every qualifier could have won with just two or three more big scores makes this an incredibly random set of circumstances that I guess would be unlikely to happen again anytime soon.

i'm glad rich has confirmed it to be one of the closest semi-finals ever if not the closest because i was thinking that myself. funnily enough, the final produced 19 200+ pointers which kinda replicated what happened in semi 2! bar a few, i think that the entire top 20 could've been easily shuffled around without much challenging from anyone.

Congrats Leww! Genuinely a brill song and a great find for me! All my faves were pretty high as well which was good to see.

 

A little disappointed by my final position but I can't be that disheartened after having 4 DNQs in a row and at least it wasn't dead last. Thanks NocheLuna for the 18 and Rollo for the 15! (and everyone else who gave me high points but I've fogotton :P )

I got the maximum points in the semi (12pts) and final (18pts) from Altyr Muunilinst, Those were the only maximum points I got from one country, nobody else gave me maximum points, must have hit the spot.

 

I must say there wasn't a runaway winner, it was pretty tight, even my track kept on bouncing up and down the table.

Interesting contest, not only with what has been discussed re: points but also just the whole thing of Freeze passing the hosting down to me, me passing it on to travis, travis having laptop issues, making Leww take over and announce his own win! Funneh. Congrats!

 

Also interesting how my 6 and 5 points in the semi (Brechtoria and Suedeonia respectively) didn't get anything in the final :kink: Vülkyria was the one I mentioned about wishing I had pointed btw! Glad it did well anyway. Bit disappointed / surprised Lotunia didn't rly connect with people, that was easily my favourite of the pop songs.

I've done a bit of number-crunching myself on my stats spreadsheet to see just how unusual this is - 10th place in semi 2 had 78.89% the points of the winner, which is a record (beating the 78.26% in BJSC 33 SF1, I'd link to the scoreboard for that but it's sadly lost to time). It would have beaten that record by even more (going up to 84.44%) if Hendinia didn't have the deduction! It also breaks the record for the smallest percentage gap between the winner and the lowest placed qualifier, with 18th place getting 68.89% the points of the winner (previous record was 64.21% in BJSC 63 SF2). So it definitely seems that this is statistically the closest semi-final ever.

edit for one more stat: Hendinia in last place in the final had 39.86% the points of the winner which is actually also a record, previously 38.66% in BJSC 74. It's interesting that it seemed after the 18 point system was reintroduced then the new norm might be every country getting well over 100 points every month, but that hasn't been close to the case, it just happened that particular contest was a bit of an anomaly! That's still the record for highest points for last place by quite a large margin ('Poison' this month has got the 2nd highest ever points for last place but still a full 21 points lower than the record). This is actually only the fifth time that every country in the final has got to 100+ points.

From placing dead last in my semi in BJSC 89, taking a HUGE break until now and coming SECOND in BJSC 116, amazing! Now to top it all off I’ve been asked to host! Exciting!

It's pretty incredible that the odds in the end do usually more or less mirror the eventual final results (though I guess the expected outcome becomes more probable with a larger sample size), but that semis are becoming almost impossible to predict now.

 

I feel like the semis are essentially pot luck now, with everything often so bunched up, success or failure hugely reliant on the make-up of the other people you've been drawn with, and the margins being so tight that literally one person moving something in their ranking by a place can mean a song qualifies or doesn't. It's pretty clear that many recent DNQs would have gone on to huge success in the final if they'd made it over the line. Even a potential winner could end up DNQ'ing by ending up in the wrong semi, though it's unlikely.

 

Huge kudos then to Leww and Cody for continually qualifying every month in this brave new completely random era of BJSC.
