Does anyone ever do a signing after week one? Could the cancelled events be rescheduled.

Just on this I’ve always wondered why acts *don’t* do this outside of week 1?

That’s horrific timing for Emeli :(

This is like the most important week for her album.

Hoping she can manage some longevity. It has potential to maybes perform similarly to how Didos Still On My Mind did.

She was a one album wonder really. I bought her first album but not one since.

Emeli was absolutely EVERYWHERE in 2012. Inescapable.. I don’t understand what went wrong!

I’ve listened to the new album and it’s ok, but very samey. I don’t think I’ll listen to it again, but there was one song (Shine..?) that was a complete BOP.

Lots of artists do that though; big first album (or second album) and then just fade...

I expected George Ezra to do the same after Wanted on Voyage was so successful and then Don't Matter Now flopped. But he managed to get through that patch and got the second big album.

I think and not in nasty way but did she get the Olympics coverage by default or something as Adele at the time had just had major surgery and couldn’t perform?

She was huge in 2012 though and 2013 too her debut album very nearly become the biggest selling UK album two years in a row I think 1D just overtook in the last week didn’t they.

Her material since is less safe though in my opinion well less mainstream.

Her debut album was a great listen but Long Live The Angels is her best album for me.

Also agree Shine is a BOP

It seems like females especially UK ones struggle with album two when album ones a success

Duffy

Jessie J

Alexandra Burke

Pixie Lott

Also went the same way.

Emelis seeming to be a Jessie J by how her third albums doing so far.

I feel like a big part of it was that she took SO long to release her second album, plus it was essentially just more of the same anyway. You could just totally sense the lack of interest when she came back.

The big gap to her second album was a problem and the material she returned with wasn't as mainstream sounding as the material on her debut.

Her debut had such a long stretch of success which was largely due to the re-release and the features she managed well beyond the original release.

I much prefer her debut album, i struggled to like any the material from Long Live The Angels.

and it's always been like this, there's an endless list of amazing UK female artist that were quickly forgotten after their debut

I still remember Beverly Craven, Sam Brown, Dina Carroll, Mica Paris, Yazz, Betty Boo, Tanita Tikaram, Tasmin Archer, in the early 90s... then more recently Duffy, Joss Stone, Natasha Beddingfield, Corinne Bailey Rae, KT Tunstall, Nerina Pallot, Kate Nash...

even big big names like Dido or Leona Lewis lasted 2 albums but not 3...

the Uk only seems to care about US female singers :/

Apart from Adele

It's a shame she left it so long to come back because 'Hurts' was brilliant and probably would've been a big hit had it came out a year or two earlier. I didn't enjoy anything she put out since though so I'm not surprised this era has been a total hype vacuum for her.

I’m surprised at this!

I genuinely found her second album to be different. Experimental in places even!

I was actually going to say the exact same thing, I thought 'Hurts' was a brilliant comeback single, she just left it too long after the first album. Also agree with the comments about 'Shine' from the new album, I gave the album a listen today and that is without doubt the standout track. I also think the album is actually better than the last one.

I wouldn't say it was just restricted to females though; I mean someone like James Bay for instance is in the same boat; massive 1st album, luke warm follow-up. I think its a problem that hits most new artists.

Sam Smith/ George Ezra/ Ed Sheeran obviously bucked the trend similar to Adele... but it pretty much affects most artists

Didn't Joss Stone have two huge albums, and then faltered drastically on the third?

I would also say Nerina never quite properly made it, much as it pains me to admit.

Emeli Sande is the biggest example you will ever find of over exposure. There was a solid year where she was inescapable, the o2 advert, her 47 renditions at the Olympics, X factor, every big TV show going, radio. It became a running joke that you just couldn't get away from her.

If anything she didn't take a long enough break, people had had their fill of her for a lifetime (or at least a substantial length of time). If she was releasing her follow up album this week it would be embraced and she would be welcomed back. Taking a long break is risky but she genuinely needed to.

I suppose you could say that Ellie Goulding and Paloma Faith both bucked the trend, with their first albums going 2x platinum and both going on to have more successful follow-ups.

And then of course Amy Winehouse completely went the other way.

That's as maybe, but 4 years is a lifetime in the current age. A lot had changed between 2012 and 2016, I think she probably needed to come back around early 2015 for the best chance really. It felt to me like the boat had been missed.

when you think about it, Adele is the exception to the rule when it comes to UK female singers in the last 30 years or so...

while there's a multitude of International female singers having multiple best selling albums in the UK (Madonna, Rihanna, Pink, Kylie, Beyonce, Britney etc etc)
