03. Oh My Gosh

Average: 8.83

Highest scores: 11 (Nick F1, Tones and Iz + RabbitFurCoat), 10 (Jester, lewistgreen, Jade + Jess Glynne)

Lowest scores: 2 (Sleepy Rollo), 7 (dobbo + Euphorique)

Receiving the bronze medal in this rate is 'Oh My Gosh'! The song lyrics feature the line "what score would you give him on a scale of 1 to 10?" - turns out that the scores here ranged from three glowing 11s to one hater in Rollo. After said 2, the scores quickly rocketed up to 7+, giving 'Oh My Gosh' a fantastic average of 8.83. The song was released as the single to launch 'The Singles' compilation in 2005! It was a commercial success, peaking at #8. It also had the honour of being nominated for Popjustice's £20 Music Prize, but ultimately lost out to Rachel Stevens' 'Some Girls' that year. Vula Malinga (who is currently in the top 40 now! that longevity) provided vocals for 'Oh My Gosh', while Skillah takes control of the rapping. It's a fun, ditsy and flirtatious house song in the duo's repertoire. They put a fun spin on the lyrics for the video, by setting it at a care-home, where elderly men and women are singing about liking each other! We say farewell to 'The Singles' in this rate now - as your top 2 is represented by two 'Remedy' singles!

'Oh My Gosh' is really enjoyable  I'm so surprised to see it doing this well but not complaining!

I do really like 'Oh My Gosh' but I thought it'd be a lot more divisive than it turned out to be!

The top two are both excellent, kinda rooting for 'Bingo Bango' to be a surprise winner.

Glad to see Oh My Gosh come out well

Here’s hoping Red Alert has gone and done it! Although Bingo Bango taking #1 will be a pleasant and welcome surprise

Good Luck is fantastic, very in your face in a great way. Fantastic vocal melody to it too. Took me a very long time to actually understand what the hell she was saying in the chorus tho.

Oh My Gosh OTOH is one of their more overrated efforts. Good track but not something I ever go back to. Didn't know Vula was the vocalist on that, great bit of trivia!

Really hoping for a Red Alert win now.

Oh My Gosh is comfortably my favourite Basement Jaxx song, so pleased to see that so high. Disappointed Good Luck wasn't in the top 3, I thought that'd be a close contender for number one. Had no idea that Bingo Bango would be so popular.

I haven't heard Where's Your Head At for years, in agreement that it's played to death and I didn't think it was that good in the first place, certainly nothing like as good as the rest of this top 10, my 5 was probably generous to be honest.

02. Bingo Bango

Average: 8.97

Highest scores: 11 (Tawdry Hepburn, Euphorique + gavindeejay), 10 (lewistgreen, Tones and Iz, danG, dandy* + SevenSeize)

Lowest scores: 6 (dobbo + RabbitFurCoat), 7 (Nick F1)

Finishing as runner up with an impressive average of 8.97 is 'Bingo Bingo'! This was released as the fourth and final single from 'Remedy' in 2000. Every release from this era reached the top 20, with 'Bingo Bango' peaking at #13. This single from the duo blends house music with techno, samba and calypso styles. The latin grooves throughout are mixed with a carnival feel, especially due to the horns that appear. The piano is also a heavily used instrument. The video works well alongside the vibes of the song, as you can see people in carnival outfits at various points. It's one of their more simple videos, which features a lot of dancing and various cultures coming together. The video also makes use of effects typically found on video editing software, such as split screen and picture-on-picture. This loopy dance song, which samples Bolivar's 'Merengue', did very well with BuzzJack, receiving 3 top scores and nothing lower than 6! But ultimately it couldn't quite trump the next song as best of the best for you all...

I'm SO surprised that 'Bingo Bango' did so well - a #13 peaking single outdoing so many others here is a turn up for the books *.* not complaining though, gave it a 9!

01. Red Alert

Average: 9.42

Highest scores: 11 (lewistgreen + Jade), 10 (Tawdry Hepburn, Jester, dobbo, Tones and Iz, Jess Glynne, gavindeejay, danG, dandy* + SevenSeize)

Lowest scores: 7 (pippa + Nick F1), 8 (Euphorique + RabbitFurCoat)

WINNING this rate with a magnificent average of 9.42 is 'Red Alert'! This was released as the lead single from 'Remedy' in 1999 and saw big chart success, peaking at #5 and achieving a gold certification. 'Red Alert' is a loud, frantic and funky house song. There are so many memorable moments here - the main hooks, repetitive background vocals, pounding electronic production, a short string section and of course... THAT scream! It's Blu James who provided the vocals for this single by the way. Basement Jaxx were inspired by the bands Funkadelic and Parliament when creating this song, so they were definitely going down the funky lane. The UK video (yes, this single actually got a video for the US market as well) is as zany as the song itself - as it features a meteor crashing into a diner, subsequently turning all those inside into zombies. But as the song says: "the music keeps on playing on and on" so of course there is a lot of zombie dancing. Not only has this song stormed this BuzzJack rate - it went down well elsewhere on the internet - with Pitchfork ranking it as #69 on their 'top 200 songs of the 1990s' countdown. A big congratulations to one of Basement Jaxx's signature songs for winning this rate!

Elated that my 11 won this rate! :cheer: 'Red Alert' is one of the first dance songs I ever remember hearing, as I used to go to a dance club as a child and I vividly remember this being one of the songs we used at some point. It has stuck with me all these years later in all its euphoric glory <3

Thanks to everyone who either submitted a rate, commented along or did both! I've had a blast hosting this and spamming the album so much in recent times.

What did you guys think of the results on the whole? I'm so pleased about the winner and 'Oh My Gosh' being as high as 3rd, but would've liked my other 10s 'Where's Your Head At', 'Rendez-Vu' and 'Do Your Thing' all a couple of spaces higher than their actual positions. Can't complain at the actual top 5 though as they all got 8+!

Oh, not really that close in the end then! 'Red Alert' was one of my highest scores so definitely a worthy winner xx

Great winner, my second fave track of theirs! Full out banger and so much going on in the song it's one I could never get tired of.

Bingo Bango meanwhile is... decent but waaay too repetitive for me.

Thanks a lot for hosting this one Jade and for your in-depth commentaries!

well that's a great choice of winner, I'd been happy with any of my 10s getting it as it's not close between my top faves.

Red Alert must be their biggest hit officially too in terms of sales.

Guess it's the right winner although I would have preferred Good Luck

agree Bingo Bingo is too repetitive and imho doesn't deserve to finish #2

Bingo Bango is easily their best song, so nostalgic.

Red Alert is their most iconic song though.

Romeo deserved to be in the top3 imo.

Romeo is overrated for me, would rather it was outside the top 5.

No arguments with Red Alert winning, it's a great single and is probably their defining song really. Bingo Bango top 2 though! Love that, grown on me more and more over the years. Like many of their singles, it's just so joyous and fun ^_^

Thanks for running this Jade, great to revisit their singles catalogue.
