I'll never forget the disappointment I felt listening to 'Girlfriend' for the first time. 'Under My Skin' was a really special album for me and 'Girlfriend' was everything I didn't want from her.

Very much this. A 4/10 that was followed by more 4/10s (at best) ever since.

As we head into the top 5 we kick things off with the one that started it all "Complicated" (bit of a shock, expected this to be top 3 at least). Avril's debut single released in May 2002 as the lead single from her debut album "Let Go". The song received a positive response by critics & offered something different to the other teen pop stars at the time with its more pop/rock sound. Upon release it became a huge smash hit by topping the charts in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand & Norway, as well as top 3 peaks in the USA & UK (held by 2 different Nelly songs in both countries), based on its chart performance, the song is Avril's 2nd most successful single (behind "Girlfriend") with over 3 Million copies sold worldwide & would therefore usher in a new wave of imitators. It would be thanks to the production team 'The Matrix' that Avril would find the right sound for her as the label 'Arista' struggled to find a suitable sound for her as they weren't happy with the heavy guitar laden tracks (including "Losing Grip") & this prompted her to find new producers & the rest is history. This track isn't just a mere breakout hit that put Avril on the map, its a classic, something that leaves a lasting impression with its universal message that still holds up rather well to this day. Driven by a mid-tempo beat, swirling synths & awesome guitar riffs along with a killer chorus sprinkled into it. Let's not forget that Avril was only 17 when this got released & even at this young age she proved herself to be unafraid to make the music she wanted to make, rather than to appease what others wanted & thank god she did as the confidence & alluring vocals would be the benchmark for not only how great this album would be, but a very promising future ahead of her.

At #4 is "When You're Gone", released in June 2007 as the 2nd single from her 3rd studio album "The Best Damn Thing" & despite mixed reviews it became a commercial success with a top 3 peak in the UK (making this her final top 10 hit to date there), as well as top 10 peaks in Australia, Ireland, Italy, Canada, Brazil, Sweden & Austria. In the U.S. it reached a peak of #24 but went onto sell over a Million copies there & earning a Platinum certification. Definitely one of Avril's best ballads of her career with twinkling piano chords & tender acoustic guitars that creates a beautiful yet slick rock ballad. This shows quite a rare glimpse of her softer side with her raw yet tender vocals that really sells the emotion of the song as she tackles the subject of loss on the tear-jerking chorus, beautiful yet haunting at the same time.

I do understand the appeal of 'When You're Gone' but I always struggled with how trite it is. Perhaps I would have been more receptive had 'Girlfriend' not tested me so much as a fan — who knows.

 

I'm so happy 'Nobody's Home' is getting a lot of love — so underrated. Great final three.

At the #3 spot is "Nobody's Home", which scored the same average as 'WYG', but placed higher due to it getting more 11's. Released in November 2004 as the 3rd single from her second studio album "Under My Skin". Upon release it wasn't quite as successful as the first 2 singles, but did gain some success with top 20 peaks in Brazil, Ireland & Austria, as well as top 40 peaks in several other countries including Australia, UK, France, Germany, Swiss & Netherlands. In the U.S. it landed just outside the top 40 with a peak of #41. So glad that this did so well on here as I do feel that this is very underrated & when it comes to naming Avirl's hits, this normally gets overlooked like it did on release. This is simply a stunning track and its on her more self-reflective & personal tracks that her vocals find their true power, especially on the choruses which shows some great strength in the song's sorrowful tone. Along with some excellent guitar strums by Daniel Stern, fantastic production & strong hooks definitely makes this track not only a fan favourite but a firm highlight in Avril's discography.

Hoping for a swap at the top of this rate compared to the 2013 rate, would much rather a My Happy Ending win :wub:

I would have given 'Nobody's Home' the 11 now had I reconnected with it sooner. It's aged well, and that middle 8 is still a moment.

At the runner up spot we have "I'm With You", (which means we all know who our winner is). But for now let's talk about this, after a very close battle this loses out on the top spot by just 2 points, but still ranks at a very respectable position with a fantastic average. Released in November 2002 as the 3rd single from her debut album "Let Go". This was her first ballad released as a single and received critical acclaim from music critics, who also thought by some to be the album's biggest potential smash. Upon release the song followed suit with the previous singles and became a worldwide smash by reaching #4 in the USA becoming her 3rd top 10 hit there & hit top 5 in Ireland, Italy & New Zealand, as well as top 10 in several other countries including the UK (her third top 10 hit there also). It's always nice looking back through Avril's discography and re-discovering some real gems & they don't get any better than this stunning rock ballad where her vocals well and truly shimmers & soar on this emotive ballad with its sweeping strings, country twangs & down-tempo beats that really bursts into a flurry of emotions on the chorus, which shows that even at this early stage in her career she showed some wonderful maturity as an artist & not afraid to show her more vulnerable and sensitive side. Even to this day this track is still great 17 years on.

So there you have it, Buzzjack's favourite Avril Lavigne song is the brilliant "My Happy Ending" & I couldn't be more happier with its overwhelming response of multiple 11's (more than any other song), & no score lower than a 8 and therefore not receiving any bad scores at all which is just swell. Released in June 2004 as the 2nd single from her 2nd studio album "Under My Skin" & received favourable reviews by critics and highlighted by Allmusic as one of the most significant post-grunge songs of all-time. Upon release the song was a success by reaching top 5 in the UK & hit top 10 peaks in Australia, Norway, Spain, Ireland, Italy, Austria & in the USA it outpeaked the lead single by reaching #9, making it her 4th top 10 hit there and went on to sell over 1.2 Million copies there. Now this was a nice surprise by topping the singles rate as I do feel that this doesn't get mentioned or remembered enough by the general public these days, but clearly it still has its fans. I've always loved how Avril's raw & powerful vocals glide effortlessly against each sweeping guitar riff on this wonderful up-tempo rock ballad that provides a great relatable side of teenage angsty love-especially on the chorus where things really unravels with snare drums throughout that compliments the glossy production really well. In all just a brilliant track and can definitely agree that this is the best thing she's ever done.
