Has anyone seen The Social Dilemma on Netflix? Naturally I feel many are aware of the issues but it goes further into the detail of how social media is further entrenching the divides and the ‘two tribe’ mentality of recent years. It touches on people falling down the rabbit hole of recommended content to the point where the only thing you end up seeing are those conspiracy type videos which is why the PizzaGate and the Virus is a myth stories really take off. The Biden wire thing just fits perfectly into that!

I don't have Netflix so I haven't seen the programme but I have read a lot on the subject in recent years. It goes back to the referendum here. A lot of the Leave campaign was conducted on Facebook. They selected their target audience so effectively that the Remain campaign were largely unaware of the lies and disinformation being spread until it was too late.
That's not how you win a debate. You win it by making better points and arguing against any points your opponent makes.

Exactly but 4 years into this Trumpian nightmare that kind of performance with him interrupting etc is the norm and won’t affect his ratings - if Obama or McCain acted like this 2008 there would have been unroar!

From BBC News:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election/us2020

President Donald Trump has said a far-right group should "stand down" and let law enforcement do its work, after his refusal to explicitly condemn the group in a TV debate sparked a backlash.

Mr Trump said "I don't know who the Proud Boys are", a day after urging them in the election debate with Joe Biden to "stand back and stand by".

Proud Boys members called his debate comments "historic" and an endorsement.

Mr Biden said Mr Trump had "refused to disavow white supremacists".

The exchange came during the first of three televised debates between the two men ahead of the 3 November election. The debate descended into squabbling, bickering and insults, with US media describing it as chaotic, ugly and awful.

The commission that regulates the debates said it would introduce new measures for the next two to "maintain order". Mr Trump said they should get a new anchor and a smarter Democratic candidate.

National polls don't mean a lot. The election will be won in 8 or 9 swing states. Those matter far more.

If Biden wins the popular vote by 13% (which I doubt), he will win the Electoral College. He need to win the popular vote by about 5% to be confident of winning overall. Any margin under that is rather more iffy with a win by under about 2% almost certainly not being enough.

Yes I agree.

Should Trump not be re-elected he'll be the first encumbent to not get another term since 1992 when George HW Bush was beaten by Bill Clinton.

Before that we go back to 1980 when Jimmy Carter failed to win another term, beaten by Ronald Reagan. Carter beat Ford in 1976. Ford had taken over from Nixon after Watergate in 1974. So Ford was never directly elected to the White House in his own right.

And Trump is behind in nearly all of them: Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Ohio and Florida. If Trump losss those he loses the election. So by any metric he is losing as things stand and the polls in those states this week have shown increasing Biden leads including several showing him up in Iowa and Georgia.

Yes I know that.

Former BJ member Vidcapper thinks the polls are fake and still sees a Trump victory but I don't. Sad times. :( I chat to a few bereaved people in the US and all think Trump's a goner soon.

What’s sad about it?

Probably nothing but I suspect he’s worried that people will have to hide their bigotry again.

Well I'll be sad and upset if he doesn't get a second term to finish all he wants to achieve. I think all Presidents need two terms really. My opinion and am entitled to it even if most here don't agree with it.

 Do not ever put such words in my mouth. Hitler was evil. Trump is nothing like Hitler. He may not be perfect but he sure ain't as bad as Hitler was.

How come many millions of Americans still support Trump if he's the devil incarnate?

What has Trump actually achieved to date?

The wall is in progress, virtual peace with North Korea, hasn't started any wars. The economy is resurging after a blip or two. He brought a bit of life, comedy and humanity to the role of President.

He appeals to their fear and bigotry: fear of “others”, fear of being left behind, of the world changing around them and not wanting to accept it or being prepared to adapt to the change. It’s not a new appeal, it’s happened throughout history when any group sees their power or influence diminish. Trump is the president of fear, of division and of hate. Those are all powerful driving forces for a lot of people.
