Back in May we had a 'thank u, next' vs. '7 rings' poll and it was agreed that 'thank u, next' had a bigger impact - with a whopping 28 votes to 3. However, as it stands '7 rings' has 684 million YouTube views compared to 473 million for 'thank u, next', '7 rings' reached 1 billion Spotify streams quicker and had an extra week at #1 in the U.S. So despite the overwhelming feeling that 'thank u, next' had a bigger impact, why are these numbers for '7 rings' more impressive? 7 rings is more ikonek x

I still stand by the fact that 'thank u, next' had more of a cultural impact. It's a phrase ingrained in society now and still feels like Ariana's biggest song despite the numbers highlighted above - taking the U.K. as an example, it's still about 200k ahead in sales here. I guess '7 rings' lends itself to repeat plays more on party playlists perhaps? Plus the trappy production feels very streaming friendly. Also the success of 'thank u, next' gave it a springboard to be huge as well - although I didn't quite anticipate how much of a monster it would become in its own right. I'm still a bit baffled that the '7 rings' video is so far ahead in views when the 'thank u, next' one was built up to be such an event though. I love both videos and would say the replay-ability factor is about the same for me. Would love to hear your thoughts ~

Also yes '7 rings' is rather ikonek

One of my theories, that probably made little impact the more I think about it is.... Have you ever been to a house party where they use YouTube as the music source and put the music video on the TV or what not... 7 rings made it to more parties than thank u, next.

The thank u, next mv came out nearly a month after the song came out, so only people who wanted to see the video would watch it not people who wanted to hear the song as well. If you add in the official audio on YT for thank u, next its only 50m behind 7 rings anyway.

Also if you're just looking to listen to the song you can listen to the 7 rings music video, but the tun one has too much talking and extended parts

That's an important point, if we're playing music via YouTube I will opt for an official audio or lyric video if the official video has a long intro or lots of talking.

I reckon its a combination of Thank U, Next building up her profile along with anticipation for the album and it having a more Spotify sound. Still seems crazy that they both have over 200 million more streams on Spotify than ntltc which seemed equally as big at the time.

It’s more urban sounding what probably helps in terms of streaming on Spotify.

That’s the main thing I can think of. But I wouldn’t have thought the gap would’ve been as big as it is.

It’s more of a party anthem too and like a real club banger. TUN sort is is too but 7 rings is the one I hear the most when I go out of the two.

I wonder what the difference is on paid for sales.

The obvious answer is length

thank u next has an intro and an interlude with Jennifer Coolidge, the 7 rings video is literally just the song. what would have more playability when a youtube playlist is left alone in a house party? obviously the one with no interludes. This can be offset by cultural impact (BTS - Fake Love comes to mind) or personal preference (maybe TUN burned out more quickly than 7 rings did) but otherwise that’s the answer I’m sticking with

Yeah I think this is the reason for most of the discrepancy. 'thank u, next' has 718m combining the video, audio and lyric video compared to 729m for '7 rings' with the video and audio combined. That's only considering the uploads on her official channel though (both have many more millions of views from uploads on other random channels, including an unofficial lyric video for '7 rings' having 152m views *_*)

7 Rings is a more party turn up song and it's more Urban sounding so it will appeal to more people where as Thank You Next would just appear to the Pop Crowd.
