Michael, we had an election and the Tories won. We live in a one party state because the previous Labour leadership team failed to connect with the general public. Hopefully, going forward the new Labour leadership will be able to connect again and make for a more even balance.

122,000 tests is pretty impressive. I see they have admitted about 40,000 of these were home tested kits. And by law and averages you can probably suggest 30-40% of these will never see the light of day in a labratory. But like I said above in a previous post, it's pretty impressive to scale up the capacity in 3-4 weeks from where we were. I work for a food manufacturer and it's not easy to scale up in a short amount of time.

It was already a one party state long before that election. The result was simply a symptom of the state of the country. Irt's an elected dictatorship. Democracy? Not anymore. Sorry.

I think next week will be interesting, I suspect they will say something but less about social outings and more about business reopening and elite sport. I can’t see that list idea working either- too hard to implement. I think there will allow us to visit friends and family and strongly recommend we use the contact tracing app.

I can’t see people sticking to the no friends and family rules if football is allowed to start up even if it is behind closed doors.

The list thing is also ridiculous, it could not logistically work.

I am hoping they just go with no more than ten can gather like other countries are doing it is the fairest option.

P.S, Ireland are planning to reopen pubs on 10 August, a country hit less hard than Britain. So there's a long, long while to go yet.

I have read through the timeline and restrictions and it all seems pretty grim.

In regards to the below I don’t understand how you can social distance in a nightclub or at a festival?

Open pubs, bars, nightclubs, casinos, where social distancing and strict cleaning can be complied with Festivals, events and other social and cultural mass gatherings only in accordance with both indoor and outdoor numbers and where social distancing can be complied with.

The list thing was mentioned for other countries before being floated as a possibility here. Nevertheless, I still can't see it working. A limit on the size of gatherings does seem a lot more practical. It could be coupled with a plea to people to limit the total number of people they mix with.

It's impossible to compare ourselves to other countries as each country is different in their geographical set-up. If we start comparing ourselves to X and Y then it just throws up chaos. I'd be shocked if pubs re-opened before September/October in the UK personally. Bars are perhaps different, as certainly bars with covers you can implement social distancing, but old your traditional local pubs I have no idea. Can't see it myself for a long time.

Oh come on Michael, you don't help your cause with such irrational and sensationalism statements sometimes when it comes to politics. We do not like in an elected dictatorship.

Yeah Michael, it's still a long way for y'all to reach Russia x

I think we’re probably going to see mass gatherings banned through to the end of the year to be honest. Think about the infection potential of an arena gig or a big football stadium. Old Trafford has a 75k capacity, an outbreak at a united match would decimate the NHS in greater Manchester and probably take every hospital in a 50 mile radius down with it. It’s too infectious to allow that sort of thing to happen without an effective treatment or vaccine.

Anything where you’re going to allow a large number of people to gather in a small enclosed space is going to be a Petri dish.

We just have to be reasonable and pragmatic. Our behaviour is going to have to change for the rest of this year at least in order to keep the R0 below 1. If we can do that we can get sectors up and running again but a lot of office jobs are going to have to stay at least partially confined to WFH for the foreseeable. My firm has told us that we’re to stay home unless there’s some technical equipment we need that only is available in the office, and if that is the case we have to wear a mask at all times in the office. So not only are they going to send us two washable masks just in case we have an emergency need to use the office but they also shared a giant PDF with maps on social distancing and rules for using offices, open plan areas, corridors and bathrooms. It was so insanely german.

I’m not sure that I can quite believe how often I have agreed with P***s M****n during corona. I feel so dirty.

Going back to the target for tests, Johnson promised that 100,000 people pre day would be tested. Even with the blatant fiddling of the figures, that target has not been met. The government have gone beyond just moving the goalposts. They have turned them into a basketball net.
The Express is livid that Piers has tuened against the white-washing, one party state press, and is actually holding the gkvernment to account. Thwy are copying the tweets of people brainwashed and conditioned by the authoritarian landed gentŕy government complaining about him daring to speak up. They claim the show is finished  I didn't think we would ever see the day where the Express and Piers fell out!
Iran’s death toll from coronavirus increased by 65 in the past 24 hours to 6,156 people on Saturday, health ministry spokesman Kianush Jahanpur said in a statement on state TV.
Has anyone read the full Ireland staging plan? It seems to be much more severe than any of the European countries and I’m not quite clear as to why. Should that plan be followed by the UK then there is no possibility we will recover from the job losses and economic devastation.

Assuming Iran’s figures are accurate, they seem to have had a good deal of success. At one point, they were roughly on a par with Italy.

Each country will have their own strategy and timelines, it’s a useful benchmark but every country is going to have a different set of economic challenges. Take football for example- France and the Netherlands have outright banned it until September. England, Germany and Spain have taken a different approach and are trying to get it back sooner. It’s just different strategies. We were hit much harder than Ireland in terms of the outbreak but some of the rules they are relaxing, we already have relaxed so it’s just going to be different.

The biggest risk is that things are done too fast and too close together. I think from a strategic point of view the government might want to get certain industries such as construction, retail, manufacturing back on track and continue to furlough other industries such as aviation, tourism and hospitality as clearly those are going to need a lot more TLC..

Hopefully we have more information next week but it is disgraceful that 6 full weeks into a lockdown we have had no information.

If we have restrictions that state you can’t see family and friends until 10th August like Ireland then there is zero chance I am following that. I am not spending the next 13 weeks with no human contact.

Can I ask how old you are? Just wondering if there was any way that when the lockdown was first announced if you could have moved back in with your parents (obviously depending on age)?

I know a lot of people who have temporarily moved back home, including one who moved back to Northern Ireland for lockdown.

I live in a different country from my parents so no I couldn’t.

I know a few people who moved back in with parents but I couldn’t for a few reasons. Me being a key worker who still has to go into work meant my mum won’t see me as she is diabetic. We actually stopped seeing each other before the schools closed. Me and my brother could have moved in together, my house is certainly big enough, but then one of us would be sacrificing their things and possibly being locked down without books and music that we love.

No, I don’t think I could have locked down anywhere but my own house. I’m still using FaceTime and zoom to see friends and family though which is better than nothing at all and of course I had quite a bit of human contact yesterday working in the resistance hub. It can be hard being on your own but one advantage I’ve had is that I’m quite good at keeping my own company and I generally enjoy solitude. Not that I haven’t had low moments but I know I can cope.

I think you’ve misread their rules, it appears from June/July they will allow human contact again. I’d expect us to follow similarly. You’ve got to remember that contact traces between people you know will be the easiest to manage. It’s the very Joe in the street who you don’t know that will be harder to trace.
