The government have changed it so all civil servants are now classed as key workers and are therefore eligible for the testing, so I’m assuming that’s how there was such a jump in testing.

It looks like they are preparing to claim to have hit the target despite the fact that the rolling three-day average of tests will be around 70,000. Four- and five-day averages will be even lower.

Here's a question that should be asked at today's press conference - If I eat two or three portions of fruit and vegetables for six days and then five items on the seventh day, am I eating my allotted five portions per day?

The reports of yesterday's press conference demonstrate just how unsuited Johnson is for a crisis like this. His statements were full of waffle with him babbling on about "road maps" and "bigger mountains". He is simply incapable of giving clear answers and statements about anything.

Given what the budget was going to be like berfore Covid-19 and the Tories' wins in the Labour heartlands, I very much doubt they will subject people to similar levels of austerity over the last decade. Especially in regards to things like pay freezes for public sector workers and underfunding of the NHS given the current pandemic. I feel that they'll end up raising taxes whilst keeping borrowing higher than they otherwise would.

They've given the go ahead to resume HS2 construction, which will end up costing £100 billion+. If the Tories repeat austerity at the same or worse levels, then I feel they won't be in government come the next election.

Who knows that the cost on the pandemic will be to the public. I doubt we will see the austerity of previous levels, but you never know. A tax rise for us all looks a dead certainty. Scrapping HS2 would be a wise thing and certainly a huge cost saver...

Whilst I don't like Johnson and I certainly agree he waffles a lot, he's most certainly trying to instill his inner Churchill, his tone is much more authoritarian than some of the other mugs that have been doing the briefings e.g. Raab. As much as I don't like him, people will listen to him more and take what he says of note.

You have to remember that there will be people listening to him who do not speak English as their first language. Even for those who are generally competent English speakers, a lot of the phrases Johnson uses are meaningless.

100%. This government are absolutely shit communicators. The worst thing is, his speechwriters will know this and his speeches raw are likely much more accessible - which means he himself is bungling the delivery by adding embellishments. Britain Trump indeed.
If we begin to ease the lockdown - but without the proper trace and contact technology and proper infrastructure in place - aren’t we just going to end up with another lockdown in a few months time?

It’s unlikely the lockdown will be eased until June. The app is apparently going live in the middle of May. They’ve done the recruitment and planning for the tracing teams, it’s the capability build next. But of course not everyone has a smartphone so maybe they will use the Bluetooth wristbands.

Raab is awful and not someone the public would feel comfort from in a time of crisis he is completely devoid of any personality or empathy.

Meanwhile, Trump says he has seen evidence that the virus was created in a Chinese laboratory. This, of course, fits in with his bizarre suggestion that it is all part of a Chinese plot to ensure he isn't elected.

I am indebted, once again, to Susie Dent for informing us that the dogmatic assertion that something is true because someone, somewhere said it and without providing any supporting evidence is known as ipsedixitism. Tonight's challenge - try saying that word after a few drinks.

Blame game. Definitely cheaper than actually doing something.

Boris said last night that we passed the peak.

How can this be so when the infection rate has been going up?

Yesterday it went up approx 2000 new cases from 4076 to 6032?

100k cases for Russia yasss queen Ms Poo-tina Bunkertina slay mama okurrr :mansoncheer:

It depends what you're counting the peak of. Yesterday was by far the most amount of tests done in a single day, so it's always likely to pick up more positive cases, and the criteria for testing will have been lowered so will pick up positive people with fewer or less severe symptoms than were previously able to be tested. The rate of cases requiring hospitalisations is a more important measure as that's what causes hospitals to become overwhelmed and causes treatments for other things to be put on hold.

Maybe he wanted to say there was a negative decrease in cases but misspoke? Poor thing, he has to go back to work after being sick for so long. Maybe he'll go visit some Corona patients again and opt out for a second term out of the office.

How have they handled it badly post-lockdown? We literally did what most other countries in the world did whilst taking a logical step to social factors. Better airport screening should have been there post-locjdown, although I guess this was a resource factor and these ridiclous guidelines about exericse and being able to travel in your car if you are exercsing for the same time it took you to travel aside, mostly, they have done OK.

There's still much debate to be had about that anyway as governments (not just the UK, the rest of the world too) want us to get infected at a slow and managable rate, otherwise what's the solution, just sit inside all day? News on the vaccine is very promising and from what I've read, a lot of the pre-work helped through the vaccinne for MERS, but it doesn't account if the virus mutates, be it a milder or deadlier form.

Lack of PPE, giving government contracts to donor companies that had never made ventilators before - and refusing contracts to companies that had ventilators ready to go in order to favour those donors; buying ventilators from China - the ventilators were the wrong ones - because of their Brexshit mentality; refusal to enter the EU PPE scheme because of Brexshit; taking ages to charter a plane for ppe, and then sending one with smaller capacity than they claimed, and constant lies. That about sums it up :) The fact that people are gearing up to sue the landed gentŕy government over medical malpractice over not adequately protecting nhs staff shows how badly they've done. Also, sending out 1000s of bots claiming people shouldn't critique the government and staying on a blame the NHS, not the government, message can be added to the list. Sorry. The landed genťry incompetent shower of shit government has failed massively. Again.

There is a chart shown at the briefings that splits out test results between hospital admissions and essential workers. The hospital admissions positives are way down and the key workers positives outweighs this now. Many of these key workers may have mild symptoms. There were 80,000 tests yesterday compared with 20,000 a couple of weeks ago.

The peak is assessed on hospital admissions and deaths rather than positive cases I would think.

Bojo the Clown is now claiming that the UK went into lockdown before France. A laughable lie. He does it knowing that the conplicit, one party dtate media will just repeat the lie and not challenge it. This whole government is utterly vile.
81,000 tests yesterday, fair play to Hancock. Every chance we will hit 100,000. I didn't think it was possible, a hail Mary or what.

I don't really understand what this current government have actually done to warrant your constant benefit of the doubt.

They have lied, they lie, and they will continue to.

They literally follow the tactics of an authoritarian government. They lie, know the media will report the lie, know thrit bots and supporters will repeat the lie ad nauseum and that everyonr will stay on message. The truth no longer matters to them.
