This is worrying, although expected. It’s so important how the government handles this next phase.

It's why the contact tracing will be really important. It's clear that it's going to be practically impossible to limit the R below 1. We are a bit lucky that we are coming in to summer so undoubtedly things should be marginally better in the outside. But at some point we're going to have to make a decision to try and salvage an economy or be faced with what state of limbo we are in now until there is a vaccine.

Hancock at war with PM and other Senior Ministers.

"Health Secretary Matt Hancock urged Boris Johnson to ‘give me a break’ in a furious bust-up over the coronavirus crisis.

The row – which raises questions over the beleaguered Minister’s Cabinet future – can be revealed as the Prime Minister prepares to use a televised address to the nation this evening to set out his roadmap for easing the national lockdown.

Pressure intensified on Mr Hancock over his handling of the crisis last night after more than 25 million goggles were found to offer frontline NHS workers inadequate defence against the deadly virus.

The latest in a string of embarrassing Government failures over Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) came as senior sources suggested to The Mail on Sunday that Mr Hancock was now living ‘on borrowed time’ in the Cabinet.

One source claimed Boris Johnson had raised questions with Mr Hancock about his department’s grip on the crisis, only for the Minister to plead: ‘That’s not fair – give me a break.’

The 25.6 million pairs of Tiger Eye goggles bought for the NHS are not fit for purpose, according to the British Standards Institute: 15.9 million of them have already been distributed, with hospitals now being told to withdraw the remaining 9.7 million from use.

‘The feeling is that Hancock is on borrowed time,’ said a senior Government source.

He has fallen out with the most powerful figures in the Government, from the Prime Minister down.

'Nothing will change immediately. But once we have beaten this thing, expect him to be moved."

Do Germany have a contact-tracing app similar to the one we're about to roll out?
Do Germany have a contact-tracing app similar to the one we're about to roll out?

Silas will be probably be better to answer, but my understanding is yes they do. Originally the government wanted to use a centralised model, similar to the ones the UK seem to be trying to implement, but they abandoned that and went for a decentralised model. I think South Korea have a centralised model in place.

Stay Alert sounds like as if a bomb is about to drop from the sky at any moment... for fffing sake.

Before long the conservative party are going to crumble, stay alert means utterly nothing to me... stay alert for what, Boris's brain is a size of a pea, he couldn't even direct an orchestra.

Interesting, but not unexpected. Personally I feel the Government have accepted that opening up business comes with inevitable consequences and right now we will just have to face it while trying to abstain as little damange to the healthcare system as possible. I don't think they want an uncontrolled pandemic, but I think by and large they have accepted that there's going to be a trade off as unfortunate as it is. They are just going to try avoid taking all the blame etc. etc. - as obvious as anything Hancock will be the fall guy for all this in an attempt to shift blame.

Considering Hancock still has the Stay at Home header on his Twitter page potentially suggests his disagreement with the change in message when every other frontline Tory MP seemingly has managed to miraculously get rid of it overnight.

Surely not? Might aswell just open everywhere back up if that is the case.

Hopefully everything is cleared up at 7pm so we know, I am sure it be step by step not just straight to it.

The message is essentially the one they were pushing before they were forced into ‘lockdown’.

So disappointing, this is the chance to get it properly under control and we just needed 2-3 weeks (with proper messaging) in order to hopefully do that.

Not sure on that one. Even after 2-3 weeks it wouldn't be under control imo. As soon as restrictions are eased there's gonna be another spike in cases and deaths regardless of when that happens. We could all be sat here for another 2-3 months, they ease restrictions and R number shoots back up again.

Unfortunately (and I think ppl know this) we're all gonna have to accept this virus ain't going anywhere and just try to get back to some semblance of normality. Of course, shield the most vulnerable and dont take stupid risks (obviously some ppl will still do this regardless of how stringent the restrictions are, sigh) but the only other alternative is we all stay locked inside until a vaccine is created.

I’m fully aware of that but it’s currently not near the level of control it needs to be under to start easing restrictions (and certainly not to start muddying the message and drop the Stay at Home slogan) whereas 2-3 weeks more of proper lockdown might get it to that level where contact tracing will be more sustainable and effective. We’re still at a higher level than Spain/Italy/France when they started easing their restrictions.

Yes, there will be a spike when restrictions are eased. That is why the current R figure is so important. If it is currently 0.5, a doubling is manageable. If it is currently already close to 1, a doubling could cause serious problems. The problem is that nobody seems too sure what the current R figure is and nobody knows what the effect of easing restrictions will be. The "doubling" part of my message is pure guess-work on my part.
So is all the information Boris was going to impart at 7 out there now?

Telegraph (which is suspected to be a bit Tory-leaning, though no-one has ever proved this theory) reported in April that Matt Hancock wished to continue with his efforts to wipe-out the VE-Day generation and many of those too young to be of that generation (as per the reported intention of D.Cumming-Too-Fast esq):

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/04/15...ess-government/

They have since solved that problem by not allowing any care home residents out at all for any reason if they have Covid-19 on the property (or maybe at all in principle for all I know). I mean the economic gains of the genocide of old people are pretty obvious. Care costs drop, houses freed up, new job vacancies, less need to rely on cheap foreign labour, NHS gets a breather, removes a whole section of benefit claimers/Labour voters (poorer elements of society).

Downside: wiping a whole section of Tory voters and alienating many who survive despite the policy. Now I'm not saying they have DELIBERATELY set out to achieve this, I'm saying it's purely utter incompetence and comments reputed to have been given by the guiding policy-maker just look suspiciously accurate given the catastrophically useless response of a Prime Minister too thick to even take his own advice and stay home to avoid catching Covid-19.

I can only assume the deliberately-vague Stay Alert is an attempt to bring back the original Herd Immunity Theory a bit sooner, as we all saw on VE 75 day, by getting all the dicks to catch it first by way of turning round and blaming them for being dicks as they hadn't ACTUALLY been told to not be dicks, it was entirely their own fault for making assumptions (should we get an increase in hospital admissions and deaths over the next 3 - 6 weeks) that dickish behaviour was the intent and smart people wouldn't be such dicks so serves them right for being a bit thick.

Which is odd, you'd think truly stupid people in power would flock together in looking after fellow thickies, but hey ho, seems not.

I’m just relieved that in Wale we’re sticking with Stay At Home. I do live perilously close to England though.

I feel sick, I can't believe this is real. It would do no one any harm to stay at home until it eased a bit further. This will literally kill people.

I'm so mortified, I hope the message is more clear and they have changed heir mind somewhat come 7pm.😓

Totally agree. We will lockdown in the main for a bit longer e.g. all the norms of our social life will not be there, but I really think they can only continue this for a few weeks at best. We've got to got to try and salvage our economy whilst protecting the vulnerable. Not easy and I know I probably sound like a cold hearted Tory bast*rd, but the impact of this long term is going to be horrendous. I don't want to be loading money in a wheelbarrow to pay for a loaf of bread in Tesco.

The issue is in the community the level of transmission is where it needs to be. But it's not in some hospitals and care homes. But I don't know what the answer to this is other than forcing care workers to stay care homes?

The new slogan has gone down terribly on social media so it’s possible they’ve had to quickly re-record with Boris this afternoon and hopefully it’ll be a much safer message.

But I won’t hold my breath.
