There was no other winner coming here as Green Day win by a landslide of 30 from a total of 37 votes with 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' which was the 2nd release from the American Idiot album. This song along with the album and singles from it was a defining shift for Green Day after staying in a same formula for a long time preceeding this. Green Day also nearly mirror the same result as 'Wake Me Up When September Ends' which had 36 Votes in total and triumphed over Madcon in the No.53 survivor. It's a good time to be Green Day In these survivors!

The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl manage to land runner up after falling out in 8th in the No.73 Survivor. It could be possible that this was a much weaker bunch of songs and with Shane McGowan's sad passing last year contributing to being kinder to the track which was first released in 1987 but since 2005 has re-entered the charts every year and is an annual favourite.

Winning from this group is Riva and Dannii Minogue's 'Who Do You Love Now' which was originally just an instrumental called 'Stringer' and that is tagged on at the end of the full title now. It peaked at number 3 and gave Dannii her longest running single on the chart. It was an closely fought battle this one throughout. Dannii's prior appearance in an EOY survivor was back in the No.66 Survivor with 'I Begin To Wonder' which also made the final but didn't come close to a competitive battle with 20 points between them so also congrats to Dannii for coming out on top this time!

Goldfrapp's big hit 'Ooh La La' makes up the final two here with 15 Votes of 35 in a back and forth battle. The song was written by Allison in 2004 in a warehouse where she states it's about a sexual relationship without the romance. It's been compared to several songs including 'Spirit In The Sky' by Norman Greenbaum and 'Some Girls' by Rachel Stevens, the latter which they dismissed and called "very bland".

Scottish indie rockers Franz Ferdinand "take" the victory here in a hard fought alternative final 2 and overtook after a couple of days of this running. They formed in 2002 and lead singer Alex Kapranos said the inspiration for 'Take Me Out' comes from watching a snipers duel in Enemy At The Gates and that it felt like a good metaphor for romantic situations one finds themselves in. To date it's Franz highest and biggest charting single peaking at 3, a peak lower than the song it beat.

The joint highest single from US band Red Hot Chili Peppers 'By The Way' end up in second which is where it peaked in the singles chart here in 2002. The band's manager was instrumental in the song getting released as lead single as it combined the wild and melodic sounds of theirs together as stated by guitarist John Frusciante. They most recently featured at the closing ceremony of the Olympics where Paris handed over to Los Angeles for 2028.

and it's another win albeit a close one for Amy Winehouse with 'Tears Dry On Their Own' which peaked at 16 and was the fourth single taken from the blockbuster album Back To Black. The lyrics and melody were composed by Amy but the music behind her voice is an interpolation of the 1967 classic from Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough'. It's also produced by Ashford and Simpson. The song re-entered the singles chart at 27 in July of 2011 for obvious reasons and then again this year following the release of the Back to Black film a few months ago.

In runner up it is 'Yellow' by Coldplay. The track which brought the band their first top 10 single, peaking at 4 in July 2000. The video had a lot of changes to the original plan as some may already know via wiki or elsewhere that all the band were supposed to be in the video but Will's mum memorial was on the same day as the filming and it was also supposed to be sunny as well but weather interrupted that hence Chris Martin can be seen walking on a beach having been soaked by the rain already. 'Yellow' which is said to be about devotion and giving his or her unrequited love for someone or something also did extremely well in the Coldplay rate that was last run, last September managing to come 3rd in that proving it's popularity all around. It was seriously following Amy so close for most of the round but has to do with second place.

Actress Kate Winslet triumphs from this survivor with her lovely Christmas tingly ballad 'What If' which was released for the Christmas Animated film The Christmas Carol which also stars Nicholas Cage and Simon Callows to name a couple. As we know it's based off the 1843 classic novel of Charles Dickens. It tells the narrative from her character Belle's point of view as Belle laments the end of her and Scrooge's relationship and wonders what could have been. It was also released to vie for the Christmas No.1 in 2001 as reported by the Daily Mirror and ultimately ended up at number 6 spending 12 weeks inside the top 40. Kate can be seen in the video walking around an old Victorian house, being haunted by the ghost of a girl which is accompanied by clips from the film. It did top the Austrian, Belgium and Irish charts though.

 

2nd James Blunt - Goodbye My Lover (16/37 Votes) [44.44%]

 

 

In runner up is James Blunt with 'Goodbye My Lover', a intimate and deep song about parting sees James Blunt sitting in a darkened room by himself reflecting on a past relationship and the video being shot in the former home of Hollywood Actor Randolph Scott. Video aside James Blunt recorded the song itself at Actress Carrie Fishers's who he lodged after meeting through the family of a former girlfriend. She was supportive of Blunts aspirations and provided a bathroom with a piano for him to record 'Goodbye My Lover'. James later mentioned "Everyone sings in the shower and everyone in Los Angeles seems to have a piano in the bathroom". The song was also released in the Christmas period, in 2005 where it was the 3rd single taken off his widely acclaimed album Back To Bedlam and peaked at 9!
