66 staff have tested positive in Wetherspoon pubs but the boss says pubs are still safe.

JD Wetherspoon has said that 66 of its workers have tested positive for the coronavirus but maintains that visiting pubs is safe.

There had been one or more cases among staff at 50 of its pubs.

Wetherspoon's boss Tim Martin dismissed claims by disease expert Professor Hugh Pennington that pubs are "dangerous".

He said: "The situation with regard to pubs has been widely misunderstood. Pubs are safe"

We really live in a country where the government puts killing for sport in the same category as essential gatherings like work and education :///

I'm not sure why I keep checking this forum, just makes me lose more faith in humanity by the day :(

Of course it's unenforceable. It relies on people snitching on their neighbours which many just won't do. Some will though. Cops can't visit every house. Easier to break up big group outside and think that's what it's for really.

Kit Malthouse encourages reporting of neighbours breaking the rule of six, https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-54142699 but yes many people will worry that reporting them will lead to escalating feuds with neighbours which could pose a risk to their safety or wellbeing.

NI Health minister Robin Swann advises that on the 6/9/20 8% of positive Covid care were in the over 60s group and by today that’s jumped to 16.6%
Hapless Hancock has said it will take weeks to resolve the problems in the testing process. How has it been allowed to get so bad that it will take weeks to fix?

I honestly don't think the team he has got involved with it, has fully business planned or has a hold on the general outlook from the public. If you have schools go back and you are encouraging people to get tests for symptoms what did they expect really? Kids pick up fevers, coughs and sneezes all the time because they're kids. If you create a fear and panic driven culture, it's only right that a parent thinks every time their child has a cough they have covid-19 (when in all honesty, the likelyhood of them having covid-19 and displaying symptoms is minimal).

I live in North Wales, right next to the border. Had I needed a test yesterday I would have had to have driven 2 1/2 hours to Aberystwyth.

Maybe Trump's buying them all for the US.

So another national lockdown in just 2 weeks according to ITV News, if the rule of 6 doesn't work. A key member of the Sage committee told ITV's Robert Peston "the only thing we know works is a full national lockdown"

Assume schools would close again then. What about pubs, shops etc? This could they say, split the country and split the Conservative party. Furlough ends 31st Oct so what if a lockdown extends beyond then or if we have a third one. They should have left the furlough situation up for review next month really.

A WINTER version of Eat Out to Help Out could be launched after the scheme's success this summer.

The initiative, launched to boost the economy and rescue the flailing hospitality sector, is being kept "under review" for round two.

Some restaurants have even extended their own versions of the scheme into this month in order to entice customers as industry heads also call on Chancellor Rishi Sunak to extend the initiative.

And today, Tory MP for St Austell and Newquay Steve Double addressed the Commons, saying: "August has been incredibly busy in Cornwall but we do face a big challenge as we head into winter for the hospitality sector.

"So could I ask Rishi if he would consider a similar sort of scheme to be run at some point during the winter to help as many businesses as possible survive the winter and be here for next summer?"

Financial Secretary to the Treasury Jesse Norman replied: "I would say that there is this wider package… of course the Treasury keeps all these measures under review… but it is a pretty formidable combination of VAT reduction, business rates relief and of course billions in tax deferrals and loans."

Is it not very likely that this crowd-pleasing paper-thin policy helped contribute to the new rise in cases? And they're going to keep doing it?

They haven't said for certain but the restaurants could do with more stimulation in winter. Maybe around Christmas time.

This'll criple y'all economy even further, how are they even planning to do this in any way. This must be fearmongering

While keeping in bubbles of 6 to crowd the eat in sections of fast food chains, blowing coronaviruses all round the plastic tables for your 50% off burger of course. Sounds like a great way to save the economy, shame about the lives lost.

That would be a ludicrous time to do it. Why would the government want to pay for people to go to restaurants at the one time of year when they are likely to be doing so anyway? February (excl Valentine's Day) or October would make far more sense.

January-February would make sense. It's a terrible time for hospitality. Notice the MP who suggested this idea was from Cornwall!

The few times I went in McDonalds I didn't find it busy at all. I got a table to myself every time. They were controlling the numbers going in. Well three times were for breakfast about 9.15 as can't use my travel pass until 9 now! Most people ordered on the automatic wall screens and keyed in Eat-In to get it half-price then when they got it just walked out with it. That's what a staff girl told me was happening anyway or they were eating some and taking boxes of nuggets or something home.

Count yourself lucky to have a travel pass at all! I won't be getting one next week :( I'll be getting my free eye test soon though :D
