#04. Genie In A Bottle | 9.043

Highest Scores: 11: (Euphorique), 10: (Liam, Nina West, ready for it, Tawdry Hepburn, Andrew, Bjork, Slick, Cameron, ElectroBoy), Lowest ScoresL 6.5: (Nick F1, Nick Jonas)

At the #4 spot we say goodbye to the last of the debut album singles with the one that started it all Genie In A Bottle, released in June 1999 as her proper debut single from her self-titled album. After trying to maintain the hype surrounding her previous effort "Reflection" (which only received a limited release), Xtina signed to RCA records, they offered to record and release her debut studio album by January 1999, though such an arrangement ultimately failed to happen. Originally she didn't like the demo version of this track, under its original title "If You Want To Be With Me". However after several changes to the song, she became proud of the end results. Upon release the song received favorable reviews ^ achieved massive commercial success by topping the charts in 21 countries worldwide, while hitting top 5 mostly everywhere else & going onto gain Platinum certifications in countries such as Australia, Belgium, Germany, New Zealand, Sweden, UK & USA. The success of this has been widely recognized as one of Aguilera's signature songs, and was credited with establishing her name in the music industry.

After spending most of the rate in the bottom half of the top 10, thankfully the scores really picked up towards the end & managed to climb into the top 5 at a very respectable peak of #4, making this something of a dark horse throughout this rate. The one that started it al;, her breakout smash hit that's still fondly remembered to this day as its a really great teen-pop song that essentially echoes the dilemma of this one’s chorus, where she won't give it up, having that assertive self respect, thanks to that memorable chorus, which Xtina sells thanks to her brilliant vocals, where at even this very early stage she shows some amazing range. Even though technically this wasn't her first single, it was the one the first time most listeners were introduced to her, and still stands as one of the finest moments in her expansive career. Oh the whole, this was an amazing debut single & quite rightly earned its success & iconic status.

We are down to our final 3 now & it was a very, very close battle with all 3 rotating at the top at various times throughout the rate. They are:

Dirrty
Fighter
Hurt

I think:

1. Fighter

2. Dirrty

3. Hurt

I hope:

1. Dirrty

2. Hurt

3. Fighter

Although I would be happy with either a Dirrty or Hurt win. Both are amazing. I used to really like 'Fighter' and I still appreciate it but I wouldn't call it her best.

I foresaw a Dirrty/Beautiful/Fighter top 3! My least favourite of the three faltered... Though I didn't vote 🙈

Want:

1) Fighter

2) Dirrty

3) Hurt

Think:

1) Fighter

2) Hurt

3) Dirrty

Think Dirrty might be on the more marmite side (obviously not too marmite, but if any was gonna get a -1, it'd be that). All are 10/10!

#03. Hurt | 9.217

Highest Scores: 11: Tawdry Hepburn, Davidson), 10: (Liam, Nina West, Jonjo, Nightcrawler, WinterFreeze, Scene, Andrew, Bjork, #VoteGarden.keh), Lowest Scores: 6.5: (Dandy)

In 3rd place is Buzzjack's favourite Xtina ballad; Hurt, serviced to US contemporary hit radio stations in August 2006, but was released for purchase in November of that same year as the 2nd single from her 5th studio album 'Back To Basics'. The song describes how the protagonist deals with the loss of a loved one and was inspired by the death of Linda Perry's father. Who along with Mark Ronson & Christina were the song's writers. Originally 'Candyman' was considered by Xtina as the album's 2nd single, but RCA chose this instead as the label thought that it would be a commercial success in the same vein as her earlier smash hit 'Beautiful'. Upon release the song received mixed to positive reviews by music critics, but it became a commercial success by topping the charts in Switzerland, top 5 peaks in Austria, Germany, Netherlands, Slovakia, Sweden, Belgium, France & Hungary, as well as top 10 peaks in Ireland & Australia. In the USA it managed to reach a #19 peak & going onto sell over a Million digital units, while in the UK it peaked at #11, becoming her 14th top 20 hit, spending 15 weeks on the charts & sold over 200,000 copies & earning a Silver disc.

Every Christina Aguilera album has at least one stand-out big ballad (or more on some albums), & on Back To Basics, it's this haunting yet beautiful number which easily displays some of her most impressive vocals of her career. Some wonderful string arrangement & a gentle tinkling piano opens this track, with Christina's vocals soft & gentle at the start. Then as the song goes on the vocals and music both build perfectly up to the chorus, sounding fantastic alongside each other, showing off her fantastic range as usual. I think its fair to say that Xtina just slays this track entirely & even tweeked some of the lyrics to make the song's message more universal. Everything about this just works perfectly & leaves an overwhelming emotional impact that sends shivers down your spine every-time you hear it. Not only is this the centrepiece on the album, but a classic in her back catalogue as well.

So now we are down to our final 2: "Dirrty" VS "Fighter" - the battle of the 'Stripped' singles, who will win, stay tuned to find out...

Yeah. I think this is going to be a 'Fighter' victory!

'Hurt' is stunning! Xtina really shines in her power ballads.

Hurt is incredible.

It’s grown so much on me, wouldn’t have been in my top 5 a few years ago, would’ve been 3 or 4 when this rate started but it’s number one now, edging out Slow Down Baby.

The correct top 2 - very pleased with that whichever way round it is! And really pleasantly surprised that 'Hurt' is so well thought of.

I love both Genie and Hurt for very different reasons.

Two of her best for sure!

A stripped era top 2! I had Dirrty down as the dark horse for this but can see it to either way tbh

Dirrty still feels like something what would be a huge hit in today’s charts though.

Hurt was my fave of the 3 left but I absolutely adore both Dirrty and Fighter so cant complain with either of them winning- I see Fighter taking the crown though
