July 19, 20206 yr from memory I'd say OA/OS was introduced in 2011 by mid-2014 downloads were slowly dying, I remember in early 2015 we had all those low Elvis #1s with just 20K On Air, On Sale was happening even in 2009, when I started following the charts (and I assume before that), but it tended to be quite rare, and with songs by minor artists, or songs that weren't expected to be hits. They were also more common from US artists than UK artists. There were a number of cases of European dance hits originally being released immediately for download in the UK, only for them to be removed from iTunes when they started getting popular (or when the record company saw potential for the song to be a hit), so that they could hold them back and get a high debut. I guess you say 2011 because of Price Tag by Jessie J? It was a highly publicised OAOS song, but it was far from the first. They did it because her previous single, Do It Like A Dude was a surprise hit and unexpectedly climbed all the way to #2 with an immediate release, so they thought they would try it with Price Tag. But the funny thing was that it debuted at #1 on its release week anyway, and nowadays you would never know it was OAOS from looking at its chart run. Also, post-album singles were all technically OAOS the whole time in the digital era, and many of them did very well. The Way I Are in 2007 for example went all the way to #1.
July 19, 20206 yr Drake really needs to do a quality filter, he's releasing crap after crap I disagree. It's worked for him his whole career. He releases 50 songs /features each year and all he needs is for the public to latch onto a couple of them. If he was releasing music like Adele does he probably wouldn't be famous anymore. With Drake it seems like you don't even know what his "singles" are, he keeps just constantly throwing songs out into the void and inevitably one takes off somehow.
