I know it's pretty meaningless due to the way most of us (especially me) consume music these days but this week's is a particularly entertaining insight into what might be happening in a paralell universe. Sophie Ellis-Bextor! Steps! Cannon and Ball! The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue by Carcass! Loads of other Halloween stuff. Anyone know how many sales you normally need to top this or enter the Top 40?

Yes, some people of a certain age are adamant it's the 'real chart'. Even though regarding that as the official one would be absurd. See also the physical chart which their veteran heroes frequently top due to overpriced vinyl re-issues etc.

Why is the Scottish Singles Chart still based on actual sales? Like this week an American boy band are charting at number 4?

Depends on the demographic. This chart is very relevant in terms of ascertaining legacy acts popularity, I guess?

 

Plus, multi-week number ones in 'Midnight Sky' and 'Head & Heart' (a genuine multi-weeker)... So this is the chart where great music prevails*... :D

 

* Aware this is subjective, my faves seem to manage sales hits

On an average week 5,000 might well be enough for #1. I reckon the number 40 does around 700.

Same. I look at it (the download charts) of curiosity sometimes, I did think of it as the “real chart”for a while. But tbh I pay more attention to the album chart than anything now.

I have a look because I can sometimes discover a decent new song that I've missed

 

And despite the low sales, it's interesting that the chart still largely makes some sort of sense - it feels like a continuation of the chart pre-2015, rather than just the big mess you would expect it to be. It's a lot more reactive than the streaming chart - a high profile TV appearance or a death has more of an impact. And I like that it's less hip-hop/rap oriented.

What I like about this chart is that it's not as hermetic as the official one. Here Gary Barlow has the same chances of getting top 40 hit as Justin Bieber, Kylie has the same chances of going top 10 as Dua Lipa, Steps can chart alongside Little Mix and BTS. More artists have a chance to chart, from different generations and genres.

I look at the sales chart on both the singles and albums just to compare the stark differences each week.

 

Only time I look at it is when Kylie releases a single to see where she ‘could’ have charted :lol:

I do look at the downloads chart every week (I assume it's pretty much identical to the sales one?)

 

#40 on this week's sales sold 480 copies (Stuck with U)

Perfect at #96 only 230.

I think that looking at the top of the iTunes chart is still relevant, what's pointless is those people being excited cos a song it's at #1415 for 5 minutes, that's literally just 1 sale
