'DISCO' finishes as the 62nd best selling album of 2020 in Australia. Out of Australian artists only, it was #15 and on overall vinyl sales it was #9. No idea of sales but Halsey's 'Manic' is #21 and is the lowest 2020 release to be certified Gold (35k).

For comparison, 'Golden' was the 71st best selling album of 2018 (#12 for Australian artists).

Kylie Minogue and Dua Lipa rocket from No. 37 to No. 15 on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart (dated Jan. 16) with “Real Groove.” The song’s original Minogue-only version, from her November album Disco, originally reached No. 26 that month.

The track’s Studio 2054 remix with Dua Lipa, released Dec. 31, drove the song in the week ending Jan. 7, when all its versions combined earned 811,000 U.S. streams, up 468%, according to MRC Data.

“Groove” sparks Minogue’s highest rank on the streaming-, sales- and airplay-based Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. Of her 11 career entries on the survey, two others have reached the top 20, both in November and both from Disco: “Magic” (No. 17) and “Say Something” (No. 18).

* The physical format breakdown from its week at #1 in the chart includes the 14 physical sales that were achieved in the week before official release. I'm not sure whether the 14 copies belongs to the CD, Vinyl, Cassette or a combination of two or three of these formats.

Total: 116,144

Physicals: 96,003 (including the 14 pre-release sales)

Downloads: 9,911

Streaming: 10,230

Sadly I don't have the physical format breakdown for 20th November and 15th January. I'm not sure if they were ever posted elsewhere?

20th November: The vinyl would have sold approximately ~1,150 (Official Charts Company stated that DISCO sold a rounded figure of 21,500 vinyl copies in 2020). / I assume the cassette sales would have been fairly low that week, given that they were heavily concentrated in week 1... maybe it's safe to assume that the CD sold over 10,000 in week 2?

It's a pity we don't have the second week figure for the cassettes, but I'm assuming it's sold a little under 5,000 cassettes to date. Personally I think that's slightly disappointing, when you consider that Lady Gaga - Chromatica managed to sell 14,000 cassettes, 5SOS - CALM sold 13,000, and even Yungblud's album sold 7,700 copies. Obviously they're all relatively modern artists who didn't release music when cassettes were a common format, whereas Kylie was around in the cassette era - in theory there should be stronger nostalgic appeal with a Kylie cassette. So why did Kylie sell thousands less than those aforementioned artists? Most of Kylie's cassette variants seemed to be very limited, so it seems to me that BMG didn't print as many copies as they could/should have done. Kylie will have undoubtedly sold a lot of cassettes to fans from outside of the UK, and these sales don't count to the UK chart... but wouldn't Gaga and 5SOS have had worldwide orders as well? Anyway, it really seems to me like BMG restrict the number of copies for no good reason, I feel like they could have easily sold way more cassettes in the UK. The same applies to her 7" vinyl singles.

Edit: 15th January physical estimates:

Wednesday midweek: 553 CD, 39 Vinyl, 9 Cassettes

Thursday midweek: 709 CD (+156), 46 Vinyl (+7), 13 Cassettes (+4)

If the vinyl and cassette sold the same on Thursday, then it would have sold 53 vinyl and 17 cassettes. Its overall physical sales were 934... subtract 53 and 17 from that, and that leaves 864 CDs.

Wow thanks for all that info, Jay! I agree with your last point about availability of cassettes and the vinyl singles, it seems pretty clear that BMG should be producing a higher number when you compare to those other artists and considering how quickly they sell out.

Nice to see the album appearing to settle with 400-500 streams, which is the same amount to what 'Step Back in Time' was (and I assume still is) achieving.

You're welcome! Hopefully that streaming stays roughly the same from now on - it could potentially sell over 20k in streams in 2021, which I'd say would be pretty reasonable for Kylie!

Amazing breakdown - Thanks.

In terms of cassettes I think the SBIT release damaged the desire for cassettes - they were 5 available and all identical apart from the cassette colour and to buy all 5 was an eye watering £75, I got them but they were a real disappointing release from a collectors viewpoint.

The Disco cassettes were extremely limited this time - the alternative sleeves which are beauties sold out in 2 hours, the standard cassette also sold out in week 1 and the only 1 that is available is the double deluxe cassette for £11 - they clearly have limited them far too much for Disco after being burnt by being stuck with SBIT cassettes even though the Disco ones were 100 times better.

The streaming of Disco is very consistent in the last couple of weeks.

Thank you for posting such detailed sales statistics.

Have to say I’m impressed with the streaming for Kylie, looks like slowly but surely she is building streaming which will be needed more than ever to combat the decline of iTunes and paid downloads.

I say with this greed, if her streaming numbers were about double what she gets weekly at the moment and if they could stay like that she would have a great chart run. Greed apart its good to see the disco era has seen an improvement in streaming figures.
