Thanks for the overview of the sales chart, was that the top 100 from last week?

Yeh I wonder if Slade and Wizzard have decreased in popularity or they are not as prominent on more world wide based playlists on Spotify or the likes?

Yep that's right, will be interesting to see what this week's sales top 100 looks like to compare.

I think Slade definitely have, Wizzard up to a point but not by that much and they are both hampered hugely by Spotify.

'Santa Tell Me' was of course starred out last week so I'll be interested to see where that lands this week, currently has two versions in the iTunes top 100

Gutted about the declining popularity of Wizzard - one of my favourite Christmas songs :(

That's interesting, I couldn't see it in the sales chart last week (does the rule of three apply to that? I have no idea actually!). I guess it's poised to enter this week based on two versions doing well.

I think Wizzard are doing ok compared to Slade, who were more popular in the year they both released (what a festive treat that Christmas must have been!). They are around seventh most popular now compared to their old berth at the bottom of the top five favourites. And they made the official top ten last year too thanks to their sales advantage and Apple Music help, it's just Spotify that seem to have them way down all the playlists every year for some reason that stops them being bigger I think.

I think there's certainly a case to be made that they're still safely inside the UK's top ten favourite Christmas songs. A little lower than they used to be perhaps but even organically Shaky and now Michael Buble have arguably overtaken them in popularity.

Christmas songs clogging up the chart doesn't really bother me, particularly because the Christmas market does change over time (albeit slowly). The list of Christmas songs charting now is quite a bit more diverse than that from 2007 when they were first allowed to chart, even if the old favourites are still there.

What I really think did damage was the 10 years or so of reality TV almost monopolising the Christmas Number 1 spot with unassailable sales, which I think killed off the impetus to produce a great modern day Christmas hit for a while. At least now there is scope for someone to write a brilliant song and try for the Number 1 with it - yes instead we've been getting Ladbaby but there's no reason someone couldn't compete with that if they really put their mind to it.

This is a good point and perhaps one of the factors why there’s a lot more Xmas songs released especially over the past 5 years. I know it’s also a US tradition to release Xmas music in albums. It does take time for new songs to establish themselves these days!

I think Spotify are world wide based playlists so songs like Bobby Helms and others are more prominent there while Slade and to a lesser extent Wizzard are more UK based as is The Pogues tbf. Slade wouldn’t have been big in the US while Wizzard was more popular due to the Spector influences!

In Belgium old songs were removed from the current charts.

I don’t get the constant debate and moaning about the charts - streaming has wrecked the charts and this is just a reflection of that.

The charts purpose is for the most popular songs to be showcased - at the moment it’s rightfully Christmas songs as that is what people are choosing to listen to and download, just as in January the charts will be a reflection of Spotify’s ‘Best of 2020’ and everyone can complain again about 10 month old tracks zooming back up the charts.

Last year I compiled a list of how well Christmas songs have done in each of the last ten years:

I'll update it again this year and it will be interesting to see the continuing pattern.

My closing comment on the post was:

A record 60 Christmas songs made the Top 100 in 2019, compared with 55 in 2018 and just 10 in 2010. Do we think that figure will keep rising over the next few years until the Christmas week Top 100 is made up almost entirely of Christmas songs? And will AIWFCIY or Last Christmas EVER get to #1?

It seems unreal now that 10 years ago there were only 10 Christmas songs in the Top 100!

The UK singles chart has never been the most 'popular' but the most purchased. Since streaming it has turned into a glorified radio chart for the most part.

The 3-track rule doesn't apply to the sales only chart. Songs have previously charted there despite being starred out officially e.g. Ed Sheeran's Remember The Name made #8 there and Ariana's own Bloodline made #28 I believe.

Thanks for clarifying this! I knew that ACR only applies to streams but never thought to question the extent of the 3-track rule that much before.

Kylie being reported as 9,444 and still #6 today from various fan pages and groups

the top 3 looks like this per the Steps pop justice thread:

GB 41,9K

Steps 35,1K

B&B 30,6K

gonna be close between #2 & 3

Very decent for Steps - glad they are looking to pass the opening of their last album although it feels like it’s been a hard multi format slog this time to get them there.

Not trying to be harsh here but I don’t think a song has been number one for so long and yet I still wouldn’t know if it came on the radio, hasn’t stuck with me at all.

It's a fitting epitaph for 2020. A year that won't be missed ending with a pretty forgettable song at #1 that is only there because nothing else of note is out.

Even though the numbers are compatible, if not higher this year, it’s evident that everyone had to work harder. Numbers might not have as high had it not been for the chart battles. Be it imagined or engineered, they have helped retailers ( and, of course, the artists involved). Everyone won, really.

actually some of the best music has been released this year, amazing pop albums from Dua Lipa, Kylie, Jessie Ware, Steps, Ava Max, Sam Smith etc but the problem is with the streaming based chart which favors the same artists thanks to having them featured on every possible playlist hence the inflated streaming numbers for artists such as Ariana, Bieber, Drake etc.... so its not surprising to have the same artists at number 1 ... and that doesnt mean that theres isnt any good music released, the problem is lack of exposure for good music...

I agree, sorry the (admittedly flippant) point I was making was about the year being terrible because of the global pandemic.
