Just to show how much stronger I felt 2020 was than the year before, we are already at the point where the songs would have ended in the top 10 in 2019. Rounding off what was such a stellar year for the genre, previously Blackpink were the only K-Pop group to make my charts but here Everglow become the fourth to place this year (following Red Velvet, Itzy & the aforementioned Blackpink). La Di Da follows the synth trend that helped The Weeknd dominate the year but this is honestly, in my opinion, the strongest example of the genre. It's so addictive and makes you sit up and take notice from the first listen. It's a massive improvement on what I'd heard from them previous and really should have been a #1 hit in my chart. It was just so unlucky to debut in the same week as Blackpink released their highly-anticipated album. This ended up spending 3 weeks behind 'Lovesick Girls' and not to spoil anything but we won't be hearing from that song until very late in this countdown.

I'm not really sure what I can say about this one because I find it so inseparable from LKOI. I guess everything I said for that one also applied for this but just a little bit extra. The outro here is fire and there's just a couple of bars here and there that I really enjoy that pushed it above Lion King. Cole's choruses have always been the weak point in his songs but the one here feels like a little more effort went into it and is all the better for it. I love Cole & Kendrick but there's just a tinge of simplicity I find in Cole's music that I adore and makes him, to me, the greatest of this generation.

It's safe to say that nobody dominated my early 2020 music habits more than Selena Gomez. Rare was on repeat all through Q1 and it does feel slightly harsh for the highest track from the album to be dropping out before we reach the top 10, especially when Look At Her Now would have easily made it if it was released earlier in 2019. But the year is too competitive and Rare will have to settle for #17. This style of pop suits Selena so well and has helped her quietly become one of my favourite artists without me really realising it. She still has one more attempt to reach this years top 10 with Ice Cream.

AJ finally got his first #1 single in my chart with the early-summer banger 'Dinner Guest'. However, it can't match Butterflies & Psych Out in reaching the EOY top 10. One of the seemingly hundreds of songs to sample 'Push The Feeling On' by Nightcrawlers (in fact MIST/Fredo released their version in the same week) so you really need to do something interesting with the production to make it stand out and fair play to The Elements because they did a much better job than Steel Banglez in this regard. Dinner Guest is just a really fun song with AJ & Mo both supplying some funny references and a banger of a chorus. No wonder this did so well officially.

This was in my YouTube reccomendations for a while before I decided to bite the bullet and give it a listen and I'm so glad I did. The production here is pretty wild and never dull; there's always something happening and it works so well with the more bubblegum melody in the chorus. This just never seemed to get old! Madison has been on my radar for a while but none of her previous material has ever been as good as I was hoping. I've always felt like I've been waiting for that one song from her to kickstart my stanning and she sure found it with 'Baby'. It took me completely off guard when I first gave this a listen on release day; I was hooked from the first minute and by the end of the track, I was already ready to name it one of the best pop songs the year. It even managed to overshadow the Headie/AJ/Stormzy collab from the same day to debut at the top of a competitive week in my chart. This is the complete package of a song: impossibly catchy chorus, provocative lyrics and a music video where she looks incredible. She's continued the form into 2021 as well with Boyshit currently being my song of the year one month in. The album's released on my Birthday so hopefully it won't disappoint and can act as a nice gift.

Overall, I found Watsky's latest album to be his weakest but there was one huge exception with Undermine gifting him his highest EOY position since 'Don't Be Nice' ended at #11 in 2016. Featured artist Raquel Rodriguez gets his first hit although she did provide vocals for the live performance of 'Sarajevo' that is on YouTube that I potentially like more than the original. Watsky has moved away from rap with 'Placement' where he experiments with different styles and he continued that with this track that's much more stripped back and low-fi than usual and is mostly sung. However, this really makes the final verse where he does start rapping all the more impactful. The visuals for this song is gorgeous too, filmed in Namibia at the same place where Tame Impala then used for their album cover only a couple of months later. This feels like an artist who is growing up and as long as it leads to songs like that, I'm very ok with it.

The first of the 3 Blackpink singles lands at a very impressive 12th position. However with another one of my favourite artist joining in with the fun with Selena Gomez, I was expecting this to be a potential EOY #1 contender when it was first announced (I mean, look at those chart histories), especially with Ariana Grande amongst the writers. However, this was unable to live up to the hype. While I still absolutely adore it, it's more in a guilty pleasure-y way when I usually just straight up love both of their music. The song is pure bubblegum-pop and the lyrics are suitably cheesy but it does feel a little over the top at times. The song does really get better as it goes on though with (apart from the like 2 lines Jisoo gets) the best parts of the track being Lisa's rap and the outro. Blackpink really are the queens of the final bridge/outro that make you want to instantly restart the song all over again.

Finishing in the unluckiest position of the year for 2020 is Diamonds by Megan Thee Stallion & Normani. This topped my chart all the way back in January and stayed in the YTD top 10 all the way until the very end. The 2nd song here that was made for the Birds of Prey soundtrack, one of the rare few films I managed to actually see in a cinema last year. I remember thinking as I was leaving the building that the film was ok but soundtrack was much stronger. You can tell a lot of effort went into the soundtrack, usually it's such a bunch of idiosyncratic tracks with no relevance to the movie but Boss Bitch & this track both completely nail the tone of the film and the video that recreates scenes are brilliant. Megan's verses are brazen and sexy and Normani nails the chorus. Wikipedia claims this is the first song ever to directly sample 'Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend' which sounds unbelievable.

Dinner Guest was a tune! AJ Tracey really has been bringing the bops recently. Giving Baby a listen now, can't see it being something I'll go back to unfortunately but for what it is it's good and she does it well!

If you would have told me a few years ago that Lady Gaga would be gaining EOY Top 10's in my chart, I never would have believed you but here we are. It only took a collaboration with my all-time favourite artist to make it happen, but happen it did. Rain On Me was obviously a massive hit, topping the charts on both sides of the Atlantic and it's not hard to see why. Usually, big-names coming together in this way can inevitably only disappoint but they somehow managed to live up to, and dare I say, exceed the hype that surrounded the release. Ari has moved towards a more R&B/trap inspired subtle sound with her latest albums but this was a complete return to the massive pure-pop songs that always appeared on her first few releases. Three all-star female collabs in a row but can the trend continue?

In what was a pretty settled top 10 this year, this is interestingly, the only song that didn't make the top 10 points chart (instead their other hit 'Do It' replaces this there). In the summer I was training from home for my new job and Chloe x Halle's album, and particularly this song, really defines that time of my life. This is such a serve of a song and builds well on the mood of the intro that precedes it (and starts the video). The vocals are quite heavenly at times which helps sell the 'not really' line perfectly. I love how Chloe's confident delivery works alongside Halle's sweeter, more innocent vocals providing the perfect blend of the two styles.

This managed to become the first new #1 of the decade back in January and spent a few months as my song of the year before eventually dropping to 8th. Doja almost managed the same feat this year when Best Friend entered at #2. Say So is another example of Doja's versatility, she can easily adapt to any beat and genre and release a banger. This is almost a pure pop song (nothing like the satirical hip-hop she got famous with) and she still glides across the beat as if it was nothing. This sounded very original when it first entered the char with its funk influence and retro stylings. Unfortunately this overplay got to this one a bit and I didn't go back to it much in the 2nd half of the year. It's starting to sound great again now they hype has died down a bit though. Even more unfortunate is that it's difficult to talk about this song with mentioning the impact this has had in the re-welcoming of Dr. Luke into the mainstream. If only it had been anyone else producing this.

Godzilla is the only song by a male artist in the whole top 10. In fact the top 6 consists of 2 entries each for 3 artists so this in fact wins the non-Ari/LM/BP chart. This is Eminem's best song in many years so I was absolutely delighted (and surprised) that it edged out 'The Box' is one of the closest chart battles of 2020 to give Eminem his 10th UK #1 single. This also acted as the first posthumous release for Juice Wrld. While I knew that Juice had previously named Eminem as his biggest inspiration, I still thought at the time that this was an odd collaboration due to the very contrasting styles but having now heard Eminem's comments about Juice (he said that he had mastered the art of freestyling) it feels apt. The chorus is one of Juice's best of his career and Eminem's 3rd verse is something to behold. It broke his own record (his verse on Nicki Minaj's Majesty) for the fastest verse in a hit song. But it's one thing to rap fast, it's another to actually fill your rhymes with good punchlines that actually make sense at the same time and that's what he somehow manages here. There are some really bad moments on MTBMB (especially on side B) but then there's still songs like this that remind us why Eminem is considered by many to be the GOAT.

Love all of 'Rain On Me', 'Say So' and 'Godzilla' in your top 10 so far :wub: the latter is not so popular on here, understandably, but I really sat up and took notice when he dropped that. Really impressive speed and I love the Juice hook too. Looking forward to seeing what comes out on top!
